This tutorial has been made by using the *Platinum version*. You may find some differences if you use the basic version of this software.
I’m glad you pointed that out, because I typed “Vegas studio 14” in the search box, and assumed this was the basic edition. So now I know it isn’t. Thanks for the clarification.
Just wanted to point out at if you drag the line with right click, you can hear the audio without going to the preview window.

I have a question, Do you know how to add narrations to your videos in the Movie Studio? I'm pretty new to Movie Studio 14, I used to use Windows Movie Maker before so this is a big step up for me. Thanks
If you mean narrations as ''voice-overs'', these can be imported as audio files, and managed as seen in this video. If you mean ''scripts'' that's a total different story, but we can't actually help since we use other software for these.
I was talking about voice-over. How you can record a voice-over in Movie studio program?
Not important audio files as a voice-over, but record naration straight in Movie studio program?
We use professional microphones, we do not record directly with Movie Studio
Boise , this software is not able to record sound for you .You need an audio recording software ,microphone and audio interface for that .Once you record audio on another program, you save it and then import it into Vegas.
I've been using VSDC for years and love the software. I was given this software, and am fairly impressed. The thing I liked about VSDC was the amount of things you could do for free. What i didn't like was that there were slight limitations and the software was super complicated. But this software is much easier to use and has all of the features of VSDC premium. Really good video btw.
And if I use an screen recorder will it show up on the tracks

im pretty dumb when it comes to video editing... im use to "windows movie maker"... does anyone have any recommendations on if i should buy this editor ? or is there something a little easier to use out there ?
Movie Studio is really one of the easiest software on the market.
I suggest getting the demo I bought it and found it will not go full screen and as of now my auto text effects wont even preview so I can even use them and I do some text effects and I end up having to do them a couple times before they work. That could be on my end I'm still learning but a bit disappointing.
MusicCollaborator thanks for the reply, I re downloaded windows movie maker and found a way to make it work. It is easy on my mechanic/truck driving brain so I'm sticking with it! Haha
how do I get it to show my video while I'm editing on the right I don't got that box on the right where you can see the video or I don't got the mixer volume neither on my screen I must of took em down and I don't no how to get it back up

Fan--tastic! ..this video is the mother load for an ignorant beginner..once to you acquire the appropriate camera (s) and computer hardware, there is a world of concentration required, but, a great movie home grown....self- learning can be frustrating but Magix makes magic...thank you...this tutorial is my main event.......I started with the SONY version of Vegas and continue to keep up with the German based Magix acquisition.....I believe "bai" a third party providing the best product overview for which I have discovered.......

mairaa345 >>> Well this may not be the best way, but this is what I’ve done before:
1. Make a new audio track below the ambient audio track that came with the original video.
2. Copy & Paste the original audio into the 2nd audio track below. This is very important. This new audio track will be able to be slid back and forth independent of the video track. Where as the original audio track is locked to the video track and you can’t slide it without sliding the video track with it. And that’s why you haven’t been able to re-sync the audio from the video.
3. Now mute the original audio track above, so that the only sound is coming from the new audio track below.
4. And now that you can slide the second audio track independently of the video track, zoom in and move the audio track however many frames or hundredths of second you need to, in order to have the video and the audio synced correctly.
I believe though in the FX menus, there may be a built-in syncing tool that allows you to delay or advance the existing original audio track; you might try doing that as well.

You can do simple masking (circles, squares etc) but I don't think you can do advanced masking unless you get Vegas Pro, which is around £600! I've been looking for and hoping for that as well :(
I'm going to see if I can find some sort of masking pluggin for Movie Studio.

bai It's not you it's me. I edit on Power Director, but obviously have Movie Studio 15. If you could just slow down the beginning process, but I know that is a lot to ask.
Have you tried using the Speed button on RUclips? Or is the video content not enough?

The time line ruler thing in Sony Vegas Movie Studio 14 is displaying time in the millions or hundreds of thousands instead of the standard HH:MM:SS:FF. For example a 15 second clip within Sony Vegas is displayed as having a time of 725,000. Does anyone know how to fix this? I have no idea how to read it.
Actually you are using the Timeline in frames instead of seconds.

Hey, I have a problem: My .avi files won't show on the screen, the audio works, but the video, like the pictures don't show up. I have no clue how to fix it. Please help! :c

yeah that happened to me you just have to convert all of em to a different format i convereted it to MP4 and it worked
Can you upscale a video to a higher resolution in the output file with the studio version? (e.g. making a 1080p video into a 1440p video. Ofc the quality will not be as good as if it was recorded in 1440p, but that's not my question)
Yes, it is sufficient to use the Source Alpha and regulate zoom and size of the rectangle you see to match the size you want on the clip-
But the size of the project itself is static? So you have to create a 1440p project right away? Or can you create a 1080p project and then export it as 1440p movie?
What's the difference between Vegas Movie Studio and Vegas Pro? How much RAM should my pc have in order to run these programs? Thanks
Movie Studio is the simplified and limited version of Vegas Pro. About memory, it depends on your use, but it is always better to have at least 2 GB free to stay safe.
At the 5:00 minute mark you talk about separating clips (which I use to do in movie studio 9) but I can't get these to separate, PLEASE HELP. I tried hitting the U button (holding it down) and highlighting it, it's not working. I tried everything for the last two days, I'm going out of my mind. I click on one & I take the mouse & try and drag the other like you are doing, but it doesn't work. PLEASE GO INTO FINE DETAIL every move that you make & tell me what I might be doing wrong. I'm not new to this type of thing I owned movie studio 9 for ten years. They changed it & it doesn't work. Thanks
It works exactly as it is explained. It does not work only in one case, which is when the clips are _grouped_.
sir is VEGAS Movie Studio 14 Suite good for beginners not full beginners as i know how to edit little bit of video editing so should i buy it or should i buy VEGAS Movie Studio 14 Platinum or should i buy both
What are the differences between Vegas Pro and Movie Studio? Are they both similar? Probably not but i need a program which is similar with Vegas Pro because it's smoother to work with Vegas Pro.

Great video! I record video with my phone, upload to my PC and then add the video to the tracks but only the video shows up, not the audio recorded with the video. Is there a way to have the audio recorded with my video show up on the tracks? For now, I have only been able to make videos with music only, or audio (voiceovers) that were recorded separately.

Why does mine keep saying Device error! when I try to capture? Up until now it was working great. I didn't change anything.
Since Sony sold it the program SUCKS ass. I highly suggest avoiding it at all costs. I purchased 14 & it was totally different from demo it took user features away. Then it stopped loading videos I already loaded bc in the past Movie Studio is to cheap to pay license fee's.
I had features that didn't work, opened a tech ticket and they fucking closed it w/o ever getting back to me. Then I was forced to open another and had several issues and they replied with ONE line saying some files wont work do to licensing. They never addressed the other issues I demanded $ back and they said if it was within two weeks and it would have been had they replied! It was a total set up! The tech is beyond bad people save yourself serious frustration because regardless you will have problems with their shit program. Try other programs avoid them at all cost.

Can you add music from any source, like a CD that I have ripped into my computer?
Of course! The most important point is to get an audio file though.
How do I revert the software back to display as it came out of the box. I hit a button some where and the layout of the screen changed and I cant revert it back. Also when I preview the video only the audio file will play. The video file and the text file dont show up.
How do you save presets in the track motion tab....Movie Studio Platinium 14 might have a bug.....has anybody had this problem.

I have just had an email from magix confirming that there is indeed a bug (and others) in the track motion tab of movie studio platinium 14....just need to wait it out until an update is available.
tbh I just want to know how to put special effects on it (like those overedited smash montages)

When you are going to render, start from a render template and use *Customize Template* more below.

Most probably because you have used a .avi file format.
How to add sound like crickets or a record scratch

I have been a user of sony vegas for 15 years and while it crashed a couple times a month, no biggie, Now, with movie maker 14 platinum, it crashes 95% of the time. I have it on two different PC's and BOTH crash. It seems to be the minute I add my watermark and titles. Before I even touch it, the system goes down and states "Not Responding"..and it NEVER does. I have high end, brand new PC's and I edit for a living so this is killing me. I hate to leave Sony but I'm going to have to start looking at more reliable software. I had read dozens of complaints of the same thing and tried everything to fix this issue.
If ANYONE knows how to fix this PLEASE let me know! Hal
Vegas and Magix are indeed one of the most stable video editing software on the market. We more address the problem to any of your drivers or graphic cards used (do they fit the specifications required by the company?)

It'll cost me around £65 to upgrade to this from Movie Studio 13, and the only difference I see is the fact you don't have to select the 'Fade' button at the bottom to put fade on a clip, and then switch back again. I hated having to do that. And in this newer version I can just do it by dragging in the top corner! (7:53) That, alone is a worth the £65!!
for me, the biggest difference is the nice looking UI instead of those HUGE touch buttons
I agree. Although I can't see why commercial software don't let the user set the colors to their liking. I use a 3d modeling software called Blender and it lets you change every single color in the UI. From the background color right down to the shading and shadowing of the text and the slider bars etc. That would be nice to have in other software :)

I have two questions
1. May i ask what is the shortest possible time that a single picture can be up for? I plan on using this program to "animate" by placing a bunch of my digitally handrawn images together, and in order for it to look smooth, each frame really only needs to be up for less than half a second, but some of the programs i use wont allow me to make the frame shorter than 1 second, which is way too slow for my needs
2. Can I add my own music to the videos? Or does it come with a set of songs and im only allowed to use those?

1. That's actually... 00:00:00.01, not less. NB: make sure to control the *frame rate* of your project. Animation requires at least 50fps.
2. If you want to *public* the tracks, you have to make sure to be able to use them. Copyrighted tracks can't be used, unless you pay a license for it. You should search for ''royalty-free'' tracks or ''creative common'' license tracks.

I purchased Movie Studio 14 yet I have no way to preview my movies in a full screen, show the time/frame number, change the video quality, etc. Additionally, the bar on the bottom of my screen only features 5 icons, whereas the one in the above tutorial has about 20. I contacted Magix and they responded with: "These extra features are available only in the Platinum or Suite version of the program."
We have used the *Platinum version* of this software. We will pin this information on the comment section.

You have to use the Pan/Crop feature or the Track Motion feature.
I try to cut part of a clip but when I got back and rewatch it it loops back to where I started the cut how do I get it to run smoothly without looping back
Disable 'Loop Playback' under the player.

Seems like a good program but it's confusing that they have another suite of editors as well, Magix movie pro/plus etc, which is the better of the two? Vegas or their own one?
The VEGAS software has been acquired by Magix not long time ago, so it is understandable that they are multiple video editing software at the moment. Unfortunately we just cover VEGAS software, so we can't say about the others.
Magix bought Vegas from Sony last year I think. So they have that plus their own software. But I'm sure they'll probably just run with Vegas in the future or combine the two, who knows.
Vegas Pro will remain Vegas Pro.. it is too famous and well-known to be ''manipulated'' on its name and basic structure. Indeed, probably there might be some MAGIX products that will merge into Movie Studio 14, which is a minor software. Yes.. who knows!
Can you use velocity in this program to speed up or slow down within the same clip without cutting the clip. Ive been using this program for a couple months but cant find this tool
You have to hold your CTRL key and then stretch/shorten clips.
