Lara's personality in the early 2000s movies is the same personality Lara had in the original games. The reboot trilogy did more than just change her look it also completely changed her personality.
I found it very funny that they basically victimized her. OG Lara was powerful, smart, cunning, capable, educated, worldly and sexy. They kept some of that, but they really hammered her down, downplayed her femininity, and kinda broke the back of her character in a way that really perplexed me. I had a couple friends, girls, that I went to school with back in the 90s who were big OG Lara fans and they were absolutely baffled to see such a strong female gaming icon changed in such a way.
One of the parts that still amazes me is that she did every single stunt herself…..the escape from Siberia especially, they had 14 cameras on her and she just had to run like hell and not get hit….Angelina is incredible 😍
Great to see someone finally react to this movie, dont forget the sequel. Maybe you already know but in case you don't, Jon Voigt, who played her father is her real father. Although the game itself was bad I always liked Angel of Darkness for its potential. As far as recommendation of female lead: Underworld 1 and 2, Resident Evil with Milla Jovovich (and why not her Joan of Arc movie), the classic Coffy with Pam Grier (or any of her blaxploitation movies), La Femme Nikita, Sex and Fury (1973)
And the reason that scene with her father is so powerful and emotional is that John Voight (Richard Croft) is her real life father, so it wasn’t really even acting.
This is the real Lara Croft! My respect for Alicia Vikander, but neither her appearance nor the film had anything to do with the fans' idea of Lara Croft and her world.
So excited for this reaction! Lara Croft was one of the first characters I fell in love with when I was younger. When I first saw this movies I felt in love with Lara even more. Still one of my favourite action films.
For a relatively petite woman, Angelina can pull off a convincing action role. She's genuinely charismatic. Have a look at Mr and Mrs Smith, that's a fun action movie with her and then-husband Brad Pitt.
I love this movie so much I have always loved Angelina and how great she plays Lara Croft she was perfect for the role and for how old the movie is it still holds up great hope you all do the next one it’s pretty great as well!
I was 14 when this movie came out and I saw it in theatres. Seeing Angie on the big screen as Lara sparked the single biggest crush I've ever had and it persisted for many many years.
I've forgotten how Great the OG Tomb Raider Movie is. Angelina Jolie was perfectly cast. Iain Glen, Jon Voight and even Daniel Craig were all spot on in their respective roles as well. I always viewed the reboot Tomb Raider games as an alternate universe Lara Croft. If you put her and OG Lara in the same room their two totally different people.
Another great reaction 😊. I can confirm that the Double Pistols were her signature weapons at the time. The original PlayStation was one of the first gaming consoles I ever purchased (the N64 being the first), thanks to my first job, and Tomb Raider was definitely among the games I played on it. 37:36 - Off the top of my head, Mr. And Mrs. Smith, Salt, and Atomic Blonde. Both Mr. And Mrs. Smith, and Salt star Angelina Jolie, with Smith having a similar feel as this Tomb Raider film, in terms of humor/quips and crazy action. Salt is more serious, but has the action. Atomic blonde is similar to Salt, but stars Charlize Theron. Other game based movies - Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Uncharted, Hitman, and Ender’s Game. Comic book movies - I’ve suggested The Rocketeer before, but I’ll add The Mask, Kick-Ass, and Mystery Men, as older but fun movies.
32:35. The pain is real. That is her actual father John Voight. Per wiki "Jolie has had a lifelong dysfunctional relationship with her father, which began when Voight left the family when his daughter was less than a year old.[26] She has said that from then on their time together was sporadic and usually carried out in front of the press"
@@maplenutsreact If you think about it, they don't actually show both their faces at the same time, so I'm pretty sure the scenes were shot at different times/places 🙂 Someone correct me if I'm wrong..
A lot of the old TR games are in the DNA of this movie, but you'll find that TR Legend and Rise of the Tomb Raider to an extent also take a lot of inspiration from the movie as well. If you want to play the older games you'll probably be happy to pick up the TR Trilogy Remasters that are supposed to release in Feb next year. If you want globe-trotting personality-filled Lara, TR Legend is a nice casual romp for first-timers.
Yes! I feel like I recognized a few things from this movie that were also in the newer games that I played! And thanks for the TR Trilogy rundown... I'd love to try out the remastered version you mentioned!
Don't forget the Nikita TV show (Maggie Q). Plot twists galore, and great action. As well: TV: Dark Angel (Jessica Alba), Alias (Jennifer Garner), Jessica Jones, Killing Eve; Movies: Suckerpunch, Killers Anonymous, Lucy, Aeon Flux, Alita: Battle Angel, Kill Bill 1 & 2, Ocean's Eight (for a lighter-hearted one), The Thomas Crown Affair (Rene Russo is superb), The Villainess (2017, Korean)... many, many more if you want. Special mention to Hackers, not only because Angelina is equally as good in it, but it's also my favourite movie. You need this one on your list. Astounding soundtrack as well.
I wonder how Kate Beckinsale would have done. She's a natural Englishwoman who naturally resembles Lara, and played Selene in Underworld, a dual-pistol-wielding vampire.
5:18 Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is a great movie. I went to see it at the cinema with my grandfather Fred RIP. Angelina Jolie was an awesome Lara Croft. Treasure Huntress Lara Croft sets off on a quest to stop a sinister cult from finding an artefact that will give whoever possesses it the power of time travel.
"To see your world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower. Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, an eternity in an hour. William Blake." This is a reference to the games, in which, while exploring Croft Manor, the player can shoot at the butler, who then also uses the tray he's carrying around to protect himself. Angelina Jolie was extremely hesitant towards wearing Lara's famous short shorts that she wears in the games, and the opening fight scene with Simon. However, she eventually agreed, because she knew it would make the fans of the character happy.
It’s cool to see your reaction since you’ve only seen the newer Lara. Loved your reaction as always! Yeah the twin Pistols were Lara’s first iconic weapons forever until the reboot.
The only thing I don't care for in this movie is the finale where Lara beats her adversary with literal fisticuffs. Someone is going to cry sexism, but no... Dude outweighs her by an easy 50 pounds if not more. She does not have toned arms, she's got pipe cleaners. Lara has never been a brawler. This is one place I would have definitely leaned into the games. Lara has two sets of *ahem* physical assets, the obvious ones, and her legs. She should have literally kicked the shit out of him. In the first game she literally trip-kicks a dude unconscious. That would have been a more satisfying finishing move, IMHO. Other than that I can't really complain. Tomb Raider is one of the best video game movies ever made, and though that's not a high bar to pass, it is a compliment. Old school adventure with a new school coat of pain (at the time anyway.) On the subject of Lara's pistols... USP Match. It's an odd choice, honestly. They're very bulky, and they're not really.... They're more of a marksman pistol. They were an upgrade brought in with the maligned "Angel of Darkness" game. In the OG games its always been a debate what kind of pistols she had, but my take was always she was packing a pair of Browning Hi-Power pistols. Obviously, even by the 90s those were getting a little long in the tooth, and by the early 2000s they would come off as quite antiquated, but... I mean there's nothing wrong with the USP Match. They're a beautiful looking gun visually.
I always thought it was interesting that Jon Voight played Lara Croft’s (Angelina Jolie) father in this movie , and then 3 years later also played Benjamin Franklin Gates’ (Nick Cage) father in National Treasure as well.
That took me all the way back to puberty. LOL This movie was the reason I always played both P1 and P2 on lightgun game at arcades. I also thought she was English and Daniel Craig was American for quite some time because of this movie.
I'm a little late to the party, but to answer your question: Yes, there is - are - games of this - the original - Lara Croft, and they just got remastered, so the original games could be played with present day gear. Tomb Raider I-II-III is out now and you will recognize the inspiration of the movie as you play the levels.
If you haven't seen it you should definitely see the 1st Alien movie. Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is a great lead character & it is a great story on top.
In a movie full of enjoyable cheese that combo of NIN playing during that slow-mo shot with the two chinooks flying over at 26:33 is genuinely awesome. Hands down my favourite poser walk in any movie. Feels like it could be in a music video.
I saw this at Grauman's (now TCL) Chinese Theatre in L.A. when I was on vacation with my mom at 16. It was such a fun popcorn flick! Angelina Jolie really was the perfect casting choice. It made for a great memory! ❤
This intro song during the spider bot battle was one of my favorite things at the time. "Absurd" by Fluke. It was on the Wipeout XL game soundtrack, then I bought and loved the whole album "Risotto" by Fluke.
OMG I used to play so much Wipeout! Love that game haha. And thanks for naming the song... after so many of these movies I go and add the soundtracks or songs to my playlists!
I am a huge TR fan and one of my all time favourite PS1 games is TR2. I would highly recommend the first 3 games, they are all referenced in this film and I recognized them all when I first saw this at the cinema. Another video game movie franchise I would recommend with a strong female lead is the Resident Evil films, Milla Jovovich is so awesome in them
The best video game movies I can think of that I enjoyed are Warcraft, Final fantasy: Advent Children and Final fantasy:Spirits within. Video game atmosphere movies....Gamer, Free Guy and Ready Player One. This was a fun watch after LOTR The Fellowship of the Ring.
Mortal Kombat (1995), Resident Evil (2002), Alien vs Predator (2004) and Doom (2005) would be my picks. Doom and Alien vs Predator aren't the greatest, but it had some fun scenes in it - especially for fans of the games/franchises.
You could also include Edge of Tomorrow. Technically not a video game movie, but the structure of improving after each death was there. Plus, it's a damn good movie.
I hope you guys will try out the remasters of the first 3 original TR games when they come out this month. We fans of classic Lara are stoked to get her back with an update. I have loved Lara since playing as her the 90s in TR1, so when this movie came out, you can bet I dressed in my khaki shorts and black tee to attend the midnight premiere. 😂 Thankfully, all the usher staff had to dress up like her too, so I wasn’t alone. LOL! Nothing beats the classics in terms of gameplay.
This and the National Treasure movies were the last ones of their kind. Practical adventure movies which will always feel way more authentic and real than those types of movies being made today. Take the recent Tomb Raider movie... it had no soul felt too distant from the characteristics of Croft and they turned her into a softie...
Yeah, this was one of the crop of good video game movies, starting with Mortal Kombat. Then Uwe Boll came along. That's why we can't have nice things. 22:33: More like, I think, the magic that animates it only works inside the temple.
Yeah, this is the OG, former SAS, guns akimbo Lara Croft, not the edgy, bow shooting Lara. The new iteration is pretty cool but the original is just the best.
The OG games were often portrayed as sexist just because of the look of the character. Such low polygon figures like games had in the 90's weren't a real draw, it was her strength, skill and attitude that drew her fans to her at least as much as her looks.
I do love this film! Always thought it was clever to use Jon Voight as Lara's dad (he is Angelina Jolie's dad). The Alicia Vikander Tomb Raider is worth a watch too. Great reaction guys 👍
On RUclips a guy has trained an AI to play the original Tomb Raider. It plays like it IS Lara, speaking in her voice and making observations about the world like "This ledge is too high, maybe I should climb on those rocks so I can reach it". Or at least he claims to have. I'm very sceptical but the videos are entertaining if nothing else.
The only Tomb Raider game I can recommend fully (as it's the only one I've completed) is 'Tomb Raider 2', which is awesome - but I've played levels from all the originals (thanks to demo disks - the '90's were a good time to be a computer gamer), and I can confidently state that they're pretty much all good. And remasters of the first three have just come out, so now's a great time to give them a try.
This was based off the original Tomb Raider game series starting in 1996. But it’s also similar to the Legend (2005) series which was a soft reboot/reset with her origin story. Also, check out the sequel, Cradle of Life. And then compare both Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movies to the 2016 movie with Alicia Vandercar based off the 2013 reboot Survivor version
If you like movies with strong female leads, I'd recommend most movies that are either directed by Luc Besson or feature his involvement on some level (usually as a writer or producer). Beautiful, badass women are practically his signature. Here are a few: • La Femme Nikita • Lucy (2014) • Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets • Anna (2019) • Colombiana
Thanks for the reaction, good job! You should check out "Tomb Raider 2" with Angelina and the newer one with Alicia Vikander. Regarding movies with strong female leads: Check out the Underworld movies with Kate Beckinsale... great action with some horror elements. Also the "Kill Bill" movies with Uma Thurman. The "Resident Evil" movies with Milla Jovovich. I could recommend more, but I think that's enough for now ;-)
For action movies with a badass female lead, I enjoyed the following (among others): Haywire (Gina Carano) Black Widow (Scarlett Johanson) Cutthroat Island and The Long Kiss Goodnight (Geena Davis)
I loved this when it came out on VHS. You should do Silent Hill if you are first time reactioners to that. Female leads - Sucker Punch - Zack Snyder - Annhilation - Alex Gardner - Kill Bill - Tarantino - Sicario - Denis Vilneuve
The three best video game adaptations are all shows. Last of us, Arcane, and Edgerunners. Arcane in particular does stuff with communicating visceral emotion through facial animation that I don't know if a live actor could actually do. It's like they take microexpressions that we should register subconsciously and turn them up to 11 for incredibly powerful visual storytelling. They can just show a half second expression that says more than most shows can achieve with 5 minutes of dialogue.
This is a great movie. Her dad is played by her real dad. Part 2 is okay. A cool video game movie you should watch is "The Last Starfighter" from the 80's
One of my favorites that is seldom featured on a reaction video is a vigilante/Russian mob/crime movie called The Boondock Saints. It's one of the most original movies for the time. It will give you Tarantino vibes, especially the way it's cut. It features Willem Dafoe as the FBI agent. A young Norman Reedus as one of the vigilante brothers.
Have you seen “Iron Man” (first one) and “Deadpool”? Ryan Reynolds was born to play Deadpool. Both awesome! Also Ryan Reynolds in “Free Guy” (video game movie) is great!
For video games movies, I want to suggest Mario Bros (the old one with Bob Hoskins), but it’s a “hate it or love it” situation, so I’m not sure. For comic book based movies, have you watch Blade? It’s neither Comic book nor video game, but my suggestion of True Lies still stands. I mentioned Bon Hoskins and it made me think of Roger Rabbit, also a fun movie
Hahaha that's all Jordan. Sounds like all the cool kids played that game! I wonder if there's a newer version you can play with a wheel and racing set up, because I'd be all over that!
One of my personal favourites where Angelina Jolie plays a badass female lead is WANTED from 2008. It's a good action flick! Of course you could always watch her breakthrough movie Hackers from 1995. It's not very action-based but still fun.
The OG Lara is the best ever! The movie Absolutely reflects the OG games and Angelina plays the most accurate Lara ever.
Minus the dead parents plotline, which was entirely absent in the OG games, the film likely lifted it from the Top Cow comics.
Way better than the latest one.
Lara's personality in the early 2000s movies is the same personality Lara had in the original games. The reboot trilogy did more than just change her look it also completely changed her personality.
So did the other reboot trilogy in the mid to late 2000s, though not to the same extent.
Yup. She’s virtually unrecognizable in the newest reboot outside of slapping the same name on her.
@@melindamercier6811 And yet they are good games. And her boobs are normal for a change.

Jackie Brown (a Tarantino movie, if you are into those) because you mentioned Pam Grier.
Selene from Underworld is basically a mash-up of Lara Croft and Trinity, so that's a good recommendation lol.
And the reason that scene with her father is so powerful and emotional is that John Voight (Richard Croft) is her real life father, so it wasn’t really even acting.

Thats actually Angelina's dad and they have a very strained relationship.
Ahh, yes, that glorious turntable, nothing like pure analog sound.
Ooooh yes!! We're planning on it! Haha, I love that you dressed up for the movie, that sounds like so much fun! ❤
The Shadow and The Phantom early stages of comic book movies early 90s…loved them as a kid
I'm loving these 90's movies! Thanks for the recommendations!
This and the National Treasure movies were the last ones of their kind. Practical adventure movies which will always feel way more authentic and real than those types of movies being made today. Take the recent Tomb Raider movie... it had no soul felt too distant from the characteristics of Croft and they turned her into a softie...
You guys should watch the second one. It's pretty good too.
Yeah, this was one of the crop of good video game movies, starting with Mortal Kombat.
Then Uwe Boll came along.
That's why we can't have nice things.
22:33: More like, I think, the magic that animates it only works inside the temple.
Jordan, I LOVE your shirt..."You all everybody..."
8:22 Hey.. Maplenuts! They.. They did the thing! lol
I love Tomb Raider Legend Trilogy!!! Movie is great Angelina is goddes
I do love this film! Always thought it was clever to use Jon Voight as Lara's dad (he is Angelina Jolie's dad). The Alicia Vikander Tomb Raider is worth a watch too. Great reaction guys 👍
Thank you so much ❤ And thanks for the recommendation! I really want to watch that one next!
Huh, that sounds really interesting!
Lmao nice save there at 1:00
"OG Lara Croft known for dual pistols, big ponytail, big.... Uuh, over to you honey"
And remasters of the first three have just come out, so now's a great time to give them a try.
the newer Tomb Raider games are awesome. I don't remember this movie a lot but I remember liking it.
Right!? I can't get enough of the newer games.
Tomb raider legend, anniversary & underworld … because they are heavily inspired by the movies
If you like movies with strong female leads, I'd recommend most movies that are either directed by Luc Besson or feature his involvement on some level (usually as a writer or producer). Beautiful, badass women are practically his signature. Here are a few:
• La Femme Nikita
• Lucy (2014)
• Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
• Anna (2019)
• Colombiana
Thanks for the reaction, good job!
You should check out "Tomb Raider 2" with Angelina and the newer one with Alicia Vikander.
Regarding movies with strong female leads:
Check out the Underworld movies with Kate Beckinsale... great action with some horror elements.
Also the "Kill Bill" movies with Uma Thurman. The "Resident Evil" movies with Milla Jovovich.
I could recommend more, but I think that's enough for now ;-)
Thank you so much! ❤ This movie was such a blast to watch. And thank you for all of the recommendations!
Resident Evil Movie Series with Milla Jovovich
On another note, have you seen the Resident Evil movie? The little Lara Croft reminded me of the Red Queen in RE.
Not yet! I really want to though. I've watched Jordan play through a bunch of the games, and I love the characters and world!
Now you know the Lara that the survivor trilogy builds up to
Love the reaction :}
How about watching Arcane ? It is League of legions based. It is set up in 3 parts. ep1-3, 4-6 and 7-9
Thank you! Oooo... Arcane huh, I've heard a lot of people really love it! We might just have to take you up on that!
For action movies with a badass female lead, I enjoyed the following (among others):
Haywire (Gina Carano)
Black Widow (Scarlett Johanson)
Cutthroat Island and The Long Kiss Goodnight (Geena Davis)
I loved this when it came out on VHS.
You should do Silent Hill if you are first time reactioners to that.
Female leads
- Sucker Punch - Zack Snyder
- Annhilation - Alex Gardner
- Kill Bill - Tarantino
- Sicario - Denis Vilneuve
The three best video game adaptations are all shows. Last of us, Arcane, and Edgerunners. Arcane in particular does stuff with communicating visceral emotion through facial animation that I don't know if a live actor could actually do. It's like they take microexpressions that we should register subconsciously and turn them up to 11 for incredibly powerful visual storytelling. They can just show a half second expression that says more than most shows can achieve with 5 minutes of dialogue.
I swear, not a day goes by that I don't think of Arcane. It's a mind-boggling masterpiece.
If you like Tomb Raider, you should check out the newest one, it follows the first game in the trilogy you played and is pretty cool.
This is a great movie. Her dad is played by her real dad. Part 2 is okay. A cool video game movie you should watch is "The Last Starfighter" from the 80's
"The Last Starfighter"... that sounds really fun! Thanks for the recommendation!
This movie is a great example of how to adapt video games to movies. I miss the old Tomb Raider days, the reboots ruined it for me.
this is the one of 2 film they did together real father daughter co starts the other they did together was Lookin' to Get Out (1982)
I love the second movie as well! Maybe even more :)
I always thought these movies were fun if you remember they are a product of their time (2000's video game movies) and to not take them too seriously.
+ 10 points to Maplenuts House for the Project Gotham Racing mention!
Did you see Daniel Craig? Bond, James Bond.
Awesome reaction to an awesome action film.
Aww thanks! ❤❤❤
MCU is always good for super heroes but if you want old school i recommend The Mask with Jim Carrey it is so fun! :D
Jolie in Salt is much grittier with just as good action.
Ooooo that sounds great! I'm sold!
