Honda Idle Relearn Procedure

  • In this video, I show how to do an idle relearn (learn) on an older Honda. It is very easy and should be done anytime work is done on a Honda such as disconnecting the battery, unplugging the ECM (Engine Control Module), working on the intake or throttle body etc.
    The ECM learns certain characteristics that help it idle and anytime the battery, ECM or throttle body are worked on, the ECM needs to relearn these operating characteristics or the vehicle may not idle properly (especially important are throttle plate angles). Many modern vehicles need some kind of idle learn procedure and a lot require a factory capable scan tool to do it.
    The procedure I show covers many Honda models but there are some newer models that need to have the ECM reset with a factory capable scan tool before letting it idle for 5 minutes.
    Other newer models also require the SCS (Service Check Signal) to be jumped using a factory capable scan tool after idling for 5 minutes. Newer 9 speed automatic transmission vehicles are particularly vulnerable to a high idle if the SCS line is not jumped using a scan tool. I do not cover either of these procedures in this video. I will try to cover them in a future video.
    The exact vehicle in this video is a 1999 Honda Accord EX V6 sedan with automatic transmission.

    Had P0507 high idle after cleaning the throttle body, slipped my mind and moved the throttle plate (used to cable driven TBs, not electronic) tried a few tricks including the 3000 RPM for 5 minutes, the idle with cooling fans, nothing worked. Disconnected both battery terminals, left it overnight as a last resort and that seemed to reset it for me. Good cold start idle

    Thank you so much for this information. I cleaned out the throttle plate area on the throttle body when I changed out a bad fuel injector in cylinder 6. The car is running fine, but the idle seems to be running a tad on the high side when at idle (800-900 rpms). I'll do this procedure and get back after to see if it brought the idle down just a little

    I'm going to make a full flush of transmission fluid on my 2008 CR-V. Found info on forums that transmission relearn is required, because fresh fluid is much lighter and therefore clutch will experience much bigger pressure than needed because transmission has previously adopted to dirty fluid and it can lead for transmission breakdown. So does this procedure relearn transmission also, and if so, does it work for CR-V 2008? I've seen some other ways of relearning it, like shifting gears back and forth, accelerating/decelerating, pressing and holding gas pedal on the 2 key position etc., so I'm not sure which one is right for my vehicle. Thanks in advance

    1993 Accord, I adjusted my idle, reset the PCM, Idle is fine after a full warm-up. Problem is the idle hunts or floats with the Headlights on. I know that there is a FA signal coming from the ALT when it detects a load. I remember my car doing this for awhile after idle adjustments in the past. I just ignored it and it seemed like it took a few hundred miles to set. Is it normal to take that long for the PCM to learn?

    So, if you plug in your scan tool you'll see there is a data pid on the enhanced data side for Idle Relearn. The two statuses are "Learning" and "Complete.". What I've found with Hondas (specifically my 2008 Odyssey) the data PID will not go to "Learning" without doing either a PCM Reset or a TP Position Data reset via the scan tool. Additionally, I've watched the data pid sit at "Learning" for about 10-15 minutes before it changes to "Complete." Just letting it idle without doing anything prior doesn't actually relearn the idle. I found this out after cleaning the throttle body for the first time at 160K and the idle was high. I tried the method you describe, which is found all over the Internet, and it didn't work. Only doing the TP Position Data reset with the scan tool allowed it to relearn the idle. Some have said disconnecting and shorting the battery cables will do it but I found that not to be the case, as well.

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  5 лет назад +1

      The idle learn procedure that I showed is correct for most Hondas including that 2008 Odyssey but on certain models (especially newer drive by wire systems) when the throttle is cleaned it will be in a different position then when the cleaning was started and sometimes it can fool the engine computer and cause an erratic idle (it will usually set a trouble code too).
      In those cases you usually have to go in with a bidirectional scan tool and clear the Throttle Position learned value using TP Position Check, reset the engine computer and then do the idle learn like I showed in video. The reason the data PID shows learning is because it MUST learn the idle after a reset and the reason it shows complete (even though it may actually be learning) is that it already has a learned value stored in memory from a previously completed learn.

      @@BigDog50001 This is interesting. The factory service manual always says after most sensor changes to "Reset the PCM" and "Do the idle relearn." It says the same thing after cleaning the throttle body. So, what is the difference between "Reset the PCM" in the scan tool and removing the battery cables and shorting them together? When I did this it was at 160K when the service info says to "check idle speed" and that involves checking throttle angle, which I found high and out of spec. I cleaned the throttle body and then had the high idle afterward but set no codes. None of the Honda idle relearn instructions posted all over the Internet would work. I've since purchased a bidirectional scan tool and had to reset it that way so it's easy now but it was frustrating at the time.

      Typically the ECM (Engine Control Module) needs to be reset with a Honda scan tool first in order to complete the relearn process on those (after resetting ECM then the procedure in this video would be done). Otherwise it will usually set trouble codes because the throttle is in a different position than the computer thinks it is.

    I have a honda accord 2003 2,4l automatic and recently the alternator went bad.I changed the diode inside and now it's working but right after that i got low and rough idle at stops...when im driving there is nothing wrong with the car but when i stop the rpm goes down to 500 and after a while slowly goes up to 600 which is still low.The rpms where around 700-750 before and 1500 at cold start, now lower..I also have check engine light and the code is P0325 Knock sensor circuit malfunction so is the bad knock sensor causing low rpms or they are not related or is it the alternator causing the low rpm and it needs idle relearn? Would appreciate any advice.

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  5 лет назад

      Typically, replacing the alternator will not require an idle learn on those Accords. If an idle learn is necessary, the engine computer should be reset first with a scan tool. For the P0325 code, the engine speed needs to be above 2,000 RPMs for the engine computer to test the knock sensor for an issue (freeze frame data on scan tool will show you engine speed when it set code). Those Honda alternators are two stage (high and low) and work in conjunction with engine computer and Electrical Load Detector (ELD). If any of them are not working properly it can effect how the engine computer controls the idle under different electric loads. You said this issue came up after working on alternator so I would double check my work if I was working on this vehicle.

    • @mitakks
      @mitakks 5 лет назад

      Thank you for the answer.For the knock sensor, i remember i was driving something like 160-170km/h when the check engine light came up, will scan it again like you said. Maybe the best idea is to put a brand new alternator but do these aftermarket ones work well for the accord or it needs to be OEM. I saw your video about the alternator replacement and it wasn't OEM, is it working well?

  • @mark3942
    @mark3942 2 года назад

    If the re-learn is unsuccessful after replacing throttle body would that mean a possible update needed to the ecm? Also to have the computer flashed would that be a dealer only thing??

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  2 года назад

      On some models the engine computer (PCM) has to be reset with a scan tool in order to complete an idle relearn. Re-flashing the engine computer does not typically need to be done for a throttle replacement and it is something that should by done by somebody familiar with the process.

      The steps I showed are part of the process but the ECM (Engine Control Module) needs to be reset first on many newer vehicles, including a 2016 CR-V. A factory capable scan tool is necessary to do the reset. Sometimes you can get away with not resetting the ECM but it sounds like yours will need it.

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  4 года назад +2

      Sometimes it can learn it on its own. When the throttle body is cleaned, the throttle position is now in a different location that what the Engine Control Module (ECM) believes it should see (and sometimes that can set trouble codes), so it needs to learn the new position. If you have a 2012 Civic (like your name says), sometimes the throttle position memory needs to be cleared and, in most cases, the ECM needs to be reset in order for the ECM to learn the new throttle position/idle correctly. This is generally done with a Honda capable scan tool.

      Usually not by itself, the throttle plate is now in a different position than the one it already learned in memory. Usually to fix that code the throttle position learned value has to be cleared and the ECM (Engine Control Module) needs to be reset. Both of these are done with a Honda capable scan tool. Then you would do what I showed in this video.

    I just replaced the starter on my 2003 CRV and had to take off the throttle body to do it. Put everything back together and the idle is all over the place revving up and down. Car is throwing a P0505 and P1505. I'm having a hard time believing the MAP sensor and Idle air control valves went bad at the same time. Does this sound like an idle reset is needed? Thanks

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  2 года назад

      Those codes sound like a symptom of something else going on. It is possible it needs to relearn the idle, especially if the throttle was cleaned because that would mean the throttle plate is in a different position than the engine computer thinks it is. I would definitely double check all my work if this happened immediately after replacing starter, especially looking for bad/bent connectors and making sure all electrical plugs are secure and in the correct position and everything is installed correctly (especially anything that can cause an air/vacuum leak). The idle relearn in this video is the correct procedure for those CRVs but in certain circumstances the ECM may need to be reset with a Honda scan tool first.

    Hello there! I got a b16a2 swap and recently my idle went by itself to 900 rpm up from 750 or so. I went to the garage, where we reset it by disconnecting the battery and then we decided to set the idle to 900, since as it's summer and it's REALLY hot, the full a/c usage will weaken the idle. During the procedure I turned on the headlights momentarily, then he set the idle screw to 900 and that was it. The car idles smooth as silk in either 750 or 900 rpm. What I don't understand is that sometimes after the fan turns on and off idles at 1000-1100, then after the next fan on and off goes to 900. Happens sometimes but why? And why the idle moved by itself to 900 in the first place? Also, I forgot to mention that ONLY when the car is in working temperature and crank it: the rpm go to 1500, then drop to 1000-1100, then after 3 seconds drop to 700 or so, then go up to 900 and stay. Why does this happen? As I said it's a b12 swap, with an obd1 ecu, completely reprogrammed with the stock b16a2 settings and map. The car runs fine and strong, but why does all this poltergeist happen? Thanks a lot in advance, liked and subbed!

      @BigDog50001  5 лет назад +1

      @Kyle Heslip Although I rarely get the whole story in one comment, it does not sound like a "programming" issue from what you describe. Those 1999 Accords do not require the PCM to be reset for an idle learn. If you just did work on it and the trouble started right after, then I would double check all work done. If the problem is not something that was induced by recent work, then it might need troubleshooting to find the problem which usually involves a Honda capable scan tool to scan for codes and to analyze scan data.
      Some knowledge of the system is usually necessary to identify a problem like that. Problem areas or things I look at on scan tool or car include: no load idle speed, air leaks, idle air control valve, Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT) readings, throttle cable, throttle body, fuel trims, idle adjust screw, 02 sensor readings, MAP voltages etc. A problem (or combination of problems) with any of those can cause issues.

    Does this work on a 2021 Odyssey?

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  3 года назад

      This is part of the procedure, but a Honda scan too is typically also needed for those. The PCM usually has to be reset and the SCS line needs to be jumped in order to fully relearn the idle on new Hondas. The PCM memorizes the learning status (like idle characteristics) one hour after the key is shut off on new Hondas like that Odyssey (unless SCS line is properly jumped), as long as the battery is still connected. If the throttle was cleaned then typically the PCM will need to be reset. *Sometimes* these new Hondas will relearn without a scan tool by letting it idle with no loads for at least 5 minutes or so like I did in this video (after fully warming up) and then shutting vehicle off for at least one hour which allows PCM to memorize its learning status.

Also, vehicle should be fully warmed up and no loads, no A/C, nothing electrical on during the 5 minute idle period (the cooling fans may come on briefly during the 5 minute idle time but you just add a little extra time to the 5 minutes to compensate).

      The throttle position is a learned value that the Engine Control Module (ECM) learns over time. When the throttle is cleaned the computer does not know the correct position and it can create a surging idle and possibly a check engine light (codes P0507 and/or P2279). Typically to fix those a Honda scan tool is used to clear the throttle position learned value, the ECM is then reset and then the idle relearn procedure (that I showed in this video).
