To Jasper Kyd, I never would have thought that 20 years ago I would listen to your composition in my mid-30s and feel that emotion now and dry my watery eyes.
*_To say that nothing is true, is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say that everything is permitted, is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic._*
The real irony of this is that it is understanding the deeper meaning of this phrase that allows one to ascend to Master Assassin. However, the terrifying reality is that the idea "nothing is true, everything is permitted" is not a noble mission on its face. It is a recipe for the breakdown of morality itself. It instructs on how a person can deconstruct their humanity to the point where they can take a life, even if they do not know themselves if the person is innocent or guilty. A true assassin. A person beyond morality. This is the darkness in the Assassin's Creed story that is lost on the current management at ubisoft. Assassins are not the good guys. But they also aren't the bad guys. Evil is sometimes necessary in a world where some people are evil by their nature. That is the journey we go on in the story. We get to see Altair live beyond the role of a pawn to understand that he is evil, but one made necessary because there are so many different ways a person can embody evil, whether it is through good intentions like the Hospitallers or lust for power like his master... Or even just someone trying to survive and betray someone he doesn't know, just to make a few coins for his family. Like the spy you have to follow and best for information, then kill in a back alley. The assassin's aren't the good guys. And their opponents. Ideological opposites... Aren't either... We come to see that with the bonding between Connor and Haytham and between Arno and the de la Serre family. *IF* nothing is true, then everything is permitted. But some things are true.
It's extremely hard not to cry listening to these great songs. Assassin's Creed 2, Brotherhood and Revelations are an important part of my life, and a big part thanks to their music, and seeing it performed so beautifully like this is truly fantastic. This series made my preexisting love for history and made it into a bonfire. Now I’m finishing my masters in International History in a year and hoping to get into a PhD program afterwards.
Regardless of how the game and the story turned out to be, the ancient Greek influenced soundtrack of AC Odyssey is probably my second favorite. Fitting for an opening set.
Most of the older people in that Orchestra have probably never played a single game of AC.. but its so lovely to see that it doesnt matter cuz they love the musical Art about it.
I had a similar thought about a couple decades ago seeing some orchestra cover Jesper Kyd's soundtrack for Silent Assassin. That many of the older instrument players did not realise what, for example, '47 makes a decision' evokes in the mind of a gamer.
This is just phenomenon! A truly masterpiece! As we went further down the history, the tears just kept coming. Tears of joy, and memory. When you played the sea shanty from AC4 Black Flag, I cried like a baby. Amazing work, keep it up! Wish I could be there.
I'm no musician but I first experienced greatness listening to the soundtrack of Hitman Silent Assassin back in 2004. The whole reason why I tried AC1 was because the score was by Jesper Kyd. Little did I know then that 20 years later, I'll be still enjoying that score and many others to follow. And that a small game about a Syrian assassin during the crusades will become a sprawling franchise. Thank you Jesper Kyd, for being the spirit of Assassin's Creed.
Just a quick glance, I thought this would be a 10-20 minute suite. After looking at the info, this is a 2 hour performance from all of the AC games. Noice!
Never thought Acre Underworld could sound so surreal in a live setting. Never even thought it would be considered for a live symphonic or orchestral setting.
First of all, I would like to thank Jesper Kyd for these works of art, and secondly, I would like to thank you for this beautiful performance. It has been my favorite game series for 14 years and this unique musics has a lot to do with it.
