“Algebra is like sheet music. The important thing isn’t ‘Can you read the music?’ it’s ‘Can you *hear* it?’ Can you hear the music, Robert?” -Dr. Niels Bohr to Dr. Robert Oppenheimer in “Oppenheimer”
Hi Jon, in undergrad, I was the exact kind of student you typically describe. I was an idiot - I didn’t want to read my textbooks, I thought I could slip by and “cheat” my way through (not by actually cheating, but by finding strategies to pass classes without doing the proper work). I was interested in the content, but too dumb to actually put in the necessary work to understand what I was supposed to learn. I have a bachelors in statistics with a 3.3 gpa. Lately I’ve been unemployed and re-reading many of the textbooks I have from undergrad. For whatever reason, I’m “smarter” now (maybe my brain finally developed at 23-24). I put the time in, and I understand things more easily. However, I also now know enough to know that I learned fuck all in undergrad. I probably can’t get into a solid grad program due to this. Just wondering if you have any advice for graduates. It seems you give great advice for students still in school who aren’t too late.
it’s incredible how perspective changes everything. learning to interpret math deeply transforms even minimal resources into gold. please, if my work has helped or inspired you in any way, consider supporting me by buying my books or donating-it truly makes a difference and keeps this going. It’s sad how the quality of high school education dulled over the many years(depending on the environment) they DO NOT PREPARE us for secondary post-educations. I’m all for learning by myself to gain an understanding…. But I’m still a child with a brain that is not fully developed. Most of the basic math and english classes , teachers just give out work with no type of effort to try and teach. So now it’s within our capabilities to teach ourselves from resources like RUclips, etc. Well, ig I’ll use this experience for college to prepare me before life hits me in the face.

I’m a student studying electrical engineering. I took your advice on preparing for the semester and It has made all but one of my classes 1000 times easier. This is due to the fact that this class does not follow its textbook chronologically but instead skips around to different chapters for each lecture. So my question is how can I be more efficient in reading the textbooks so I can catch up and actually understand lectures because the first two lectures felt like they were speaking an entirely different language, and the corresponding chapters have taken longer to digest than expected. Thanks for everything you do.
glad the advice helped! for the skipping-around class, try skimming each chapter’s summary, key concepts, and examples before lectures to get the gist, then focus on problem-solving after class for deeper understanding. Is group theory self teachable?
No one can be taught-they can only choose to learn.
@@authorjond That answers my question.
@@IsmailPbx Yes. Anything is self teachable. Even in college, its all basically teaching yourself
You're great🎉
