- Living in the 70's (released in October 1974 on Mushroom Records) is the debut album by Melbourne band Skyhooks. It spent 16 weeks at the top of the Australian album charts and became the highest-selling album by an Australian act up until that time. Two singles were lifted from the album: "Living in the 70's" and "Horror Movie". The latter spent 2 weeks at the top of the Australian singles chart in 1975. Six tracks from the album were banned on commercial radio in Australia; in defiance of this, however, the ABC's new youth station in Sydney, 2JJ, played the track "You Just Like Me 'Cos I'm Good in Bed" as their first ever song when they began broadcasting in January 1975.
one of the greatest aussie bands,,,if you saw them live you would understand why ,,,shirley's voice,,what can you say ,,rip, shirl,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and so many great albums ,,,still have all mine still flog them,,,,
I'm American born in the 70s and I've turned several of my friends onto them. They are so impressive, esp rock with some punk and r&b vibes.
Your use of commas disturbs me.
They were a Melbourne band and I saw them live a lot as a teenager. Will always love them as they remind me of a time when I was a very rebellious little shit wagging school and getting drunk on cheap grog. Good old days.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,, ,,, , , , , ,,,,,,,,
And the onstage antics between Shirl and Red was priceless. Never to be repeated.

💕 💕 💕
A bunch friends and I went and saw them in Jacksonville, FL back in 1975 or 1976, They opened for Uriah Heap who was very popular in Jax back then. always sold out in Jax. They absolutely blew Uriah Heap off the stage. We couldn't even watch Uriah Heap after their performance and left after a few songs. I remember people saying that they were like a cross between Led Zepplin and Lynyrd Skynyrd. I went out and got the Ego is not a dirty word and Living in the seventies albums the next day.
One of a number of great Australian bands of that era that had the abilty to match it with most . Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, the Sunnyboys, Rose Tattoo, the Divinyls, Radio Birdman, the Angels, Hunters and Collectors, Split Enz, Dragon etc etc
@@stephenformosa471 Some great bands there. Enz were from the other side of the ditch though.
RIP Shirley Strachan
+R.C Jones 'Seeya Shirl' - Red Symons
This album is the most "revolutionary" Australian record made..and still sounds ahead of its time today.
So glad I grew up listening to skyhooks❤️❤️❤️
took me straight back to platform shoes, sharpies, and staggers flares
I was at a Santana concert in Auckland years back. Skyhawks were there but not as the main billing. They stole the show, great live band, got the whole stadium rocking. Santana you had sit and listen to. The crowd got bored with it.
He was like the Jim Morrison for the Skyhooks had all the looks and moves plus a good voice.
The Best!! Love it. Biggest selling Album for it's time.
still love this song ..... great lyric's... Shirl bless you ...
wishing you were here xxxx
We used to know all these songs off by heart as kids....
FMD no comments?
this song was an anthem in the 70s
Where r the over 40s?
Short memory
oh no we remember. Great Aussie rock.
Take note of "Greg" on bass in this clip. He was crook at the time, so the story goes, and a fill in was required. Rumour goes it was his girlfriend at the time. Don't know if thats true or not, but it is a shorter person that didn't quite fit the clothing!! Love the hooks!!!
Yeah, I didn't think that was Greg...the stand-in is swimming in those clothes!
Well spotted . Did not see that at first.
Yes. It's Jenny Brown, Greg's girlfriend at the time. SHe also wrote the book "Million Dollar Riff".
I really miss Shirl, what a voice!
I was born in the 70's.. shocking me right out of my brain..
🇦🇺Whoo hoo 👍
Heard them perform at the Cobram Peaches N' Cream Festival on the floating stage on the Murray river, one warm Saturday evening January 25, 1975, in front of the audience on Thompsons beach- now that was "living in the 70's".
RIP Shirl. What a guy
Thanks for posting. The 70's is certainly where my music taste still lives.

amazing how well recorded and well mixed that first album was/is...hard to believe it was recorded that fucking long ago...
Yeah it is..when you think of the technology they where working with, it sounds so much richer than a lot of today's stuff. You can't beat analogue.
I wish I was old enough to have lived in the best decade in Australian history.

DIED SAME WAY AS Colin McRae... shame
Feel guilty for saying though was Pluck 'a Duck worth more than Shirls?
Red's great sure on bass and guitar though not as much as Shirls,.
The belter singers get the credit, and most likely the pussy.
