Baker River to Sulphide Creek (Hiking Trails in Washington)

This trail far exceeded our expectations. It turned out to be the perfect journey and destination for a lovely autumn day with beautiful fall colors and an abundance of mushrooms and other fungi. We also had the special treat of spotting a few red sockeye salmon returning to Baker River to spawn.
We wandered about 6 miles total which included several side trails to view Baker River at different vantage points. The trail is mostly flat with only a few steep sections and one major washout requiring extra care. Dramatic peaks and the shoulder of Mount Shuksan can be seen from the rocky shore of Sulphide Creek just beyond the camp area. Continuing a short distance south along the rocky creek bed leads to Baker River with more interesting views up and down the river.
This trail enters the North Cascades national Park at about 2 miles so a permit is required to camp at Sulphide Creek.
