Here’s my problem with Dany not believing Jon. What reason would Jon have to lie to her? And even if she thought it was some plan to trap her and betray her in the north, then why would him bending the knee make a difference? He’s still just as capable of lying even if he bends the knee

Keep in mind, Daenerys invited him specifically to bend the knee, and Tyrion completely left that out of the letter he sent to Jon. So when he gets there, she assumes that he's come to bend the knee, and Jon has no idea about any knee bending cuz it wasn't mentioned. So then she's confused as to why he bothered coming at all, then he starts asking for stuff and going on about White Walkers. She realistically doesn't buy it because not one of her Westerosi advisors which include Tyrion, Jorah, Ser Barristan, Olenna, Yara, Theon, Ellaria, Varys, even Viserys, have ever brought this up. However, this Jon Snow who calls himself King (which basically ignores her position as The North isn't actually independent), who is the son of Ned Stark, who was best friends with Robert Baratheon, a man who had literally tried to have her murdered from the day SHE was born, until the day HE died, is saying they exist and they're coming. She has no reason to believe him. Even in his argument, he claims the throne won't matter if the army of the dead come, but essentially contradicts that by implying Northern Independence will. To Jon, he's thinks he's dealing with another power obsessed monarch who doesn't care about the people and he's frustrated. To Dany, she's thinks she's dealing with another entitled & patronizing man, trying to uses lies to scare her into doing what he wants and take all she's worked for, so she goes in super assertive boss mode. Her attitude isn't off or wrong, she's just a woman in a super misogynistic land, realizing that she has to either go hard or go home because as a woman, she's already at a disadvantage and that's without being a "foreigner" (which technically she's not), and the "Mad King's Daughter".
TL;DR Their first meeting went badly due to their own preconceived notions of who the other was based on their familial relations, and miscommunication surrounding the point of the meeting due to Tyrion's deception in the letter.

I will concede that you have some very good points. But she came at him the way lady Olenna told her to. @Kiki 17 This may be the best summary of this scene I've read. For me Jon was pretty stupid in these exchanges he showed zero ability to negotiate or finesse this situation. Daenerys said "join me and together we will save this country from those who would destroy it". Then later Tyrion says "help us defeat Cersei and together our armies will protect the north". He didn't have the mental capability to turn these statements to his advantage.

Jon would have been branded a traitor to the North if he just bowed down like that and pledged himself to a new queen after all they went through, the hard-fought war for independence of the North. Like he said, he'd at least have to talk to his lords before taking such action. Granted, Dany was surprised, but I still think she was mostly in the wrong of the two of them. She came off as arrogant and unwise in that encounter. There was very little attempted persuassion on her part, no lucrative offer for what the North could gain by such an alliance. Instead it was just: I am the rightful queen, bend the knee. The only good part was the apology for her father.

I think what people aren't understanding about Dany is that she's trying to win her own war, and now Jon wants her to help with a Northern threat. In her mind, why should she pledge her resources, her dragons, her support, to someone that won't pledge to do the same for her? That's why she asks him to bend the knee, otherwise she would be putting her entire power play on the line for him, with no support in return. It's not being stubborn, it's being diplomatic and needing him to meet her halfway. The support has to go both ways.

Dany can tell that Jon is sincere, but it still doesn’t change the fact that she is putting herself (and the people who chose to follow her) at great risk by giving him her forces without anything in return. SHE would be a bad ruler by doing that. Jon is doing the exact same thing she is - expecting help while remaining loyal to their people. The only difference is that we KNOW Jon’s war is more important.
To be fair to Dany, Jon is being ridiculously stubborn. He wants an army and dragons, it doesn’t just fall into his lap because he’s a nice guy. It didn’t even happen in the war of the bastards. Actual northerners refused to help him. Why would a southerner who is trying to be a Queen be any more lenient?
And why does this suddenly make Dany wrong? She’s no different than she’s been before. Everyone in the comments is acting like she’s entitled. As if she’s never locked up her own dragons, or opened fighting pits which went against all her morals, or married herself to a man so that she could better rule her people. Dany makes the good choice, it just doesn’t always pan out well for her. Like Ned. He made the right choice in confessing, it’s just Joffrey was a dick.

@Mercia Silver I do get that she was incredibly hard from the get-go, and she could've approached it differently. When Yara came and asked for a kingdom, she was less discerning and more open, but then, Yara also agreed to support her rule and help her win back the kingdom. Jon did none of that. And I think she was intimidated by Jon, a little, since he's a man with no claims at all and was still named King. When he told her of her family's crimes she asked for forgiveness, but then he still went ahead and told her he wouldn't support her throne.
She felt like she was dealing with someone who didn't want to compromise - and yeah, from a strategic point of view, she was at a HUGE disadvantage since she needs all the support she can get. But all Dany knows is that showing weakness gets you killed. The last time she trusted in a stranger, half her khalasar was murdered and her dragons were stolen. When she reopened the fighting pits, as a way of making peace, she was almost assassinated. She's now saying "alright, I'll fight for you, as long as you support me" which is what she offered for all her allies but he's not doing the same back.
I DO get that her approach "bend the knee" was oddly rough for Dany (and her continuous repetition of it). It's very off-putting. But then, whenever any character is rough to Jon, we all see them as off-putting and in the wrong, even when they're not. Kit does a good job of making Job's point of view feel like the truest one.

Magic is more common knowledge than White Walkers, also remember Dany's scene with Varys even though Tyrion defends him Daenerys still confronts him, when she trusts someone she wants to trust him because she does not because her advisors tell her to, you can take Jorah for an example he wasn't aggressive and earned her trust easily and years later she finds out he betrayed her so Daenerys isn't going to rely completely on first impressions

Because she's not dropping everything she's worked for to help some dude she doesn't even know? And with no proof of the threat he's going on about? And for nothing in return? Look, I get it, it's easier to sympathize with Jon, but that's only because we've seen what he's seen. Dany hasn't. The only thing she sees is the war already in front of her nose. That's her focus because it's real without a shadow of a doubt and it's already in motion. Granted, she could tone down the pomposity a little, even though she's sort of always been this way. Annnnnd Steven just totally blew over the fact that, to Dany's perspective, a stranger marches into her throne room and demands she drop EVERYTHING she's worked her ENTIRE life for to help him, while he gives absolutely no promises that he'll help her in return, and is in fact insisting that one third of the country she's trying to get back for her family will be GONE at the end of it. That doesn't exactly make a person want to be accommodating. Never forget, we know him. She doesn't. And he didn't exactly phrase his request as anything but a demand. Then again, we all knew Jon was never that good at this negotiations stuff.

      Dany Fanboy: BUH....BUH JOOONNNNN!
Please stop. I don't care about Jon, I am talking about Daenerys.
Now, Jon did not want to be made King in the North but his bannermen named him so. Because they trusted him and believed in him, as he went to war in desperate odds and was prepared to fight for what was Just, even to the bitter end.
If he bends the Knee, he loses not only his "pride," but he betrays his own supporters because they want HIM to lead them, not some foreigner they never met, whose fathers fought to overthrow her own.
Daenerys has lived a life of privilege, with a few periods of exception, with everything she has being handed to her by other people - her name by her father, her husband by her brother and everything she owns by her Dragons.
And for some reason, she now believes this means SHE is fit to be Empress of the Universe, simply because she believes she should be.
She turns up in a continent she has never lived in, demanding to be acknowledged as it's Queen for no other reason than she feels entitled to it.
Jon acts out of duty and honour.
Daenerys acts out of greed, pride and lust.
Do you fucking see the difference between them?

The Northerners would never accept a southern ruler? I think you've already forgotten that that's exactly what Jon's bannermen said to Jon in his meeting before he agreed to travel to meet Daenarys. It's the exact same situation, and that's intentional from the showrunners.

      @@Longshanks1690 OH another Daenerys hater.
How she had everything handed to her? She was sold and raped. Dorthraki left her after Drogo died. She married a man she despised only to keep a fragile peace in Mereen. From the moment she was born she was hiding because Robert was sending assassins after her and Viserys. This Tyrion quote from ADWD perfectly represents why she is like this.
“I know that she spent her childhood in exile, impoverished, living on dreams and schemes, running from one city to the next, always fearful, never safe, friendless but for a brother who was by all accounts half-mad...a brother who sold her maidenhood to the Dothraki for the promise of an army. I know that somewhere upon the grass, her dragons hatched, and so did she. I know she is proud. How not? What else was left her but pride? I know she is strong. How not? The Dothraki despise weakness. If Daenerys had been weak, she would have perished with Viserys. I know she is fierce. Astapor, Yunkai and Meereen are proof enough of that. She has survived assassins and conspiracies and fell sorceries, grieved for a brother and a husband and a son, trod the cities of the slavers to dust beneath her dainty sandalled feet."

She has been raised from day one that she is of the ruling blood of this kingdom. The bending of the knee of her subjects IS HER RIGHT! This was not a democracy. Add to this, these subjects, Jon's father, rose up and to slay the members of the royal family whom had ruled for thousands of years. For her personal safety it's understandable that she feels she most subjugate the lords who rebelled. In this time being nice gets you viewed as weak and over-throne.

This season is chalk full of season 1 callbacks. That front gate with Arya is a callback to when Arya was dirty from chasing that cat, and she was trying to get back in to tell Ned what she heard in the cellar. They wouldn't let her in at first, but she told them she was Ned Starks daughter and she'd box their ears.
The words Dany said to Jon about him putting his pride before his people, is a callback to Jon talking to Mance Rader about him bending the knee to Stannis to spare the wildlings. But in this situation, her father did murder their Stark leaders in the north. The north remembers.
Brandon has been hollowed out from too much information download. He wasn't being arrogant to Meera, though. He has lost a large part of his humanity to take on being the 3 eyed raven.

Daimon Mcilwain And this is exactly why I have a problem with Dany. It's always, always, always "what can you give me", or "what do you have that I want", or "I'll take what you have, and feel justified in doing so, because I'm right". It's "me, me, me". Jon, on the other hand, has never done anything that was for his own self. Everything Jon does is because it's good for his family, brothers of the Night's Watch, the Wildlings, the North, and now the whole realm. He went south, into a situation that was dangerous for him & with little protection of his own, to face a "ruler" he knew nothing about. Even after being told that it's possible that he's a captive at Dragonstone, he's still concerned enough about the threat in the north that he's willing to put aside the issue and just mine the dragonglass that he came for. I don't hate Dany, far from it actually, but I do love what Jon stands for. He's sacrificed a lot for the good of EVERYONE, not just himself. Dany has worked hard to get what she's gotten, and her speech to Jon in the throne room, on their first meet, we are reminded of everything she's accomplished, and I appreciate her for that. But everything Dany has accomplished was to get her closer to the throne, and everything that Jon has accomplished was all to save people - not just slaves, but everyone.

Not only that. You had no issue when a man in Stannis made People declare for him like The people at castle black. See the difference is you like John do you don’t want him to have to bow down. Fine but then he’s in open rebellion and an enemy. I don’t know what people thought was going to happen. You have to bow to royalty or die. Dorne, tyrells all sides with Dany. Nobody had an issue. Jon refuses. Well this is exactly what would happen with any ruler. What would happen if Robert summoned Jon and he refused to bow? Exact same shot except Jon might be killed. As for not believing in white walkers, NOBODY, believes in them. Ned didn’t. Stannis barely cared. Walkers surely wasn’t his priority it was taking the throne. They start the show establishing that nobody has seen white walkers in a thousand years. Come on if someone tells you someone that hasn’t been alive since the year 1018 is walking around you might be skeptical. And again it’s not like all of Westeros is preparing. Most of the word is clueless.

Another Novel Note: Historically, the Lannisters were the wealthiest family in Westeros with the gold mines of Casterly Rock. The Tyrells of Highgarden were the second wealthiest because they had the most farmlands and fed half of Westeros. After Robert's Rebellion, the Tyrells were pardoned, but had to pay large sums of gold to Jon Arryn instead of offering a family member as collateral. As Tywin made repeated loans of gold to King Robert, that gold went to pay for the wine and food from Highgarden at prices set by the Tyrells. Thus, in the modern age, the Tyrells (unknown to anyone) had become wealthier than the Lannisters.

P.S. thanks for doing this in two parts. I know how much work it takes to edit these and some of these episodes really deserve the extra bit. Enjoying these soooo much!

Keep it up guys Jon sparing Theon was realistic much as he hates him for attacking Winterfell and betraying Robb he knows the bigger threat is coming and he can’t afford to cause discord among alliances because he feels Theon should be punished. Its another difference between Jon as he can show mercy in a way Robb didn’t. The parallels of Arya returning to Winterfell echoed a lot like the King’s landings scene from season 1.

The dagger is worth half a kingdom; it's valyrian steel, gold and dragon bone. An ancient artifact likely brought over by Aegon when he conqured Westeros. It also appeared in that book Sam was reading a few episodes back.

The irony is that Ned refused to have her assassinated when Robert found out she was pregnant, I guess Varys didn't tell her that part? Also, that Ned's been protecting a Targaryen his whole life, but whatevs.

" He doesn't want anything just help", according to Nikki. Are you kidding me lol?? No he just wants her dragons armies and everything else while he gives up nothing in return. What do you expect her to do? She's here for a purpose and thats the iron throne and is suppose to give that up that after one guy, who she doesn't know just shows up and says some things haven't existed after 8,000 yrs and shows up w/out any proof.

Same with Jon. Why would he give away the land he just won back from traitors. His home, her sisters home. They suffered a lot to win Winterfell back. All the northerners were threaten and brutilized by the Boltons. Jon's been fighting all his to keep people safe. He was named King in the North by the people. Why would he bend the knee to someone that calls herself Queen of the 7 Kingdoms If she doesn't even know those Kingdoms or their people. She just came and occupied an abbandoned Castle (I know she was born there) and says I'm the rightful queen. Nope. Her father was taken down because he was mad. It's being said Robert Baratheon ruled well, shit went down in KL since Joffrey. She sounds very much like Viserys (not at the same douchy level) but she is the one that must understand that to rule well her dragons are not the solution, she has to win the people first because in the 7 Kingdoms she is the stranger not Jon. She is the one that has to prove she is reliable.

@@mmg1800 The same reason that Jon 'gives away his land' as you called it, is the same reason he does so later in Episode 6. She's the only one out of anybody else in the show that has the strength and power to protect everybody in the seven kingdoms and the precious North. She's the one who comes to save Jon during the wight hunt and he realises what kind of peson she is, proving how 'reliable' she is. Also, how much of a stranger is she really when 3 of the 7 kingdoms are already allied with her?? "understand that to rule well her dragons are not the solution", thats such a bullshit statement. Please tell me a time in Mereen when she was ruling and dealing with a diplomatic issue but she couldn't do it so her dragons took care of it for her. Did she get the Geryjoys by making them submit to her dragons, or did she use diplomacy to get them on her side. "Robert ruled well" This must be a typo unless you're actually that stupid.

Someone pointed out something that made me think last video. Small instances of magic are widely accepted in Westeros and there are proof of the dragons by the skulls in King’s Landing. As far as a massive undead army coming to kill everyone while Cersei and Daenerys are fighting over the iron throne is actually a bit of a stretch.

when Bran said "Chaos is a ladder" after little finger mentioned " chaos" in his sentence, because little finger said that to Lord Varys (the spider) in season 3 I think. So that is why Little finger was very surprised and looked terrified of Bran.

Something I never knew while watching this show: I always wondered why they were just letting Bran sit out in the forest alone. It's never made clear in the show, but the whole wooded area around the tree with the red leaves is an enclosed section of Winterfell, like a giant courtyard.

    Lore stuffs:
Back when Aegon the conqueror came to Westeros, he went north and told King Torrhen Stark to bend the knee as well. Torrhen knew if he didn't, many of his people would die, if not all of them. He bent the knee, and is forever known as The King Who Knelt.

"Command respect, not demand respect" - Nikki, I love you! XD
I loved the scene in the cave when they show White walkers, it gives such a strong sense of threat. This is HOW you can make a truly powerful villain and yet know so little about that adversary.
