You can get along almost everywhere with an XC hardtail. You can't really jump (lightweigt wheels, 80-100 mm travel, high seatpost, skinnier tires), but with aggressive tires you can enjoy even trail riding.
Trail hardtails are the best. I'm looking for to buy a giant fathom 130mm trail hardtail, but the prices are going up and they're always out of stock in XL
Always rode with a backpack, bought a hip pack after recovering from a broken collarbone and wow! I did it because the strap on the backpack was very uncomfortable, and now I know, even though some packs claim good air flow, it's nowhere close to no pack. Plus putting any extra weight on your hips rather than your shoulders is 2 fold, 1, it lowers your center of gravity, might not be much, but I can feel the difference, and 2, you have larger muscle groups carrying this. And they don't really feel the difference. switching from a backpack to a hip pack feels like taking your backpack off, tossing it trail-side and riding on.

I have done all down hull tracks in Uk and Scotland on my £850 specialised rockhopper from 2009 and have flown past people on big travel full suspensions. And then I can carry on peddling up hill when they are pushing.
I sometime can't decide which bike to ride, so I bring both my hardtail and my FS bikes to the trailhead, and decide when I get there - or I do a lap with each. I do go much faster on the hardtail on most trails. However, my hardtail build is not a low-end, budget bike anymore. I paid $650 for my first hardtail in 1999. I build my new hardtail myself for $4350. The same build is $7000 in my local bike shop.
@@chainreactioncycles I bought a carbon frame direct from the factory in China for $490. Looks almost identical to a Trek frame. Fox 32 stepcast fork, carbon wheelset with Hope Pro hubs, Magura MT8 brakes, Sram XX1 drivetrain. Race Face Next SL cranks. 21.1 lbs.

Last year I got my first hardtail in about 7 years. My last hardtail had 26" wheels and 100mm fork. Thankfully it did have disc brakes. Then I bought a 130mm front and rear full suspension bike with 27.5" wheels. I did upgrade it. Dropper post, better 4 pot brakes, 180mm rotors, rear shock, wheels and tyres set up tubeless. I did change the front rotor to a 203mm rotor. Last year I got a Oebea Laufey. The 140mm fork and 2.6" tyres did help. As it is my first 29er. I was a little surprised how well it carries speed. As the original brake were less powerful than I'm used to I changed the brakes to the same Shimano SLX M7120 brakes on my full sus. On the Orbea I still use 180mm rotors. I use the RT99 IceTech rotors. I have also change the bars to the OneUp carbon bar. As I wanted the OneUp bar to be the same width as the original 780mm bar. I needed to cut it down. I actually found cutting down carbon bars for the first time quite scary. Even with the correct saw guide and carbon blade. I would like to get a 29er full sus.

Great video! Watching this after picking up a 23’ analog! I’d like an opinion, I went with an XL and I’m 5’11” and 160lb. It was the only one they had and picked it up on sale for €650 so I figured I’d try it. I was worried about it being too big, but it seems to fit me comfortably though! Maybe my arms are a little more stretched than ideal when riding flat, but that’s kind of normal with this kind of bike?

Awesome vid! Here's a dilemma: Assuming my budget is max the price of the cube analog, do I 1)Buy the cube cause its a good ht and it has reliable shimano brakes and sram gears or 2) Do I buy a cheaper (-80€) bike (a gt avalanche) which has slightly more aggresive geometry (67.5° instead of 68.5 of the analog) and wider handlebars, but the brakes and derailleur are a bit worse (it has tektro and mikroshift bits which I am unfamiliar with)? I intend to upgrade some bits in the future anyway, and I would like to have a more aggresive bike for the descents! So basically frame vs components is my point. Also, is it possible to fit like a 120mm fork on the cube? Sry for the long comment, keep up the good work!!!!
You can change components, you can't change the frame. Ideally you get a frame with the parts you want, because a big company can get them cheaper than you upgrading afterwards. But if you have to compromise, don't compromise on the frame (and fork). Derailleurs, shifters and the brakes usually get overcredited. Riding skills, Frame/Fork and Wheels are at least 95% of the equation in my book. In your special case I would argue that 1 degree difference is not much and neither is a very aggressive geometry. Everything below 66 degree is where progressive geometries start. Regarding the 120mm: Can't say for sure, but usually this screws up the geometry and usually this makes things worse and not better. Just my 2 cents
@@antitainer3761 way more than 2 cents dude, thanks!!! Hey Grigoris - for sure go for the bike with the best frame you can afford to kick your journey off. As Anti says, you can upgrade parts as and when - but the frame needs to be a solid platform to work from. Let us know what you go with 👍
I have a full sus now but im selling it because its not a real sus its very cheap so im buying that bike you had in the video i think its a cube reaction pro becuse its have better forks and gears and rame so hardtail is good for me because i dont jump so much
Get yourself a quality hardtail like a Banshee Paradox or Nukeproof Scout/Ragley Big AL with the same components as your Full squish bike. It will change your life.
Hi Matt, I'm considering getting this CUBE Analog but I'm not sure about the size. I'm 6.2 feet height and I prefer the geometry from L (large size) instead of XL. Do you think L size will affect that much and the bike will feel small? What is your height? Cause you used the XL version. Your response on this is much appreciated. Thanks!
Man, I've been almost killing myself on a Soul SL300 26" hardtail for quite a while. Took me a while to find the right bar, height and all but damn I wouldn't trade it for any other bike (except maybe the 29" version hehe). Took me quite a while to get it just right as the frame was size 17 and I'm 19 (1.83m, 6'00 I think?) and I didn't really know what I liked to ride/felt comfortable But once I got it, I honestly think I reached my limits on what upgrading a bike will do. It looks kinda stupid, REALLY HIGH, but damn I love passing guys who spent 4x more than me and then see me, with curved bars, 26" wheels, all around goofy mfer just passing through.
I never like with hard tails was the feel of the nose dive due to suspension in the front only. The change in geometry off hard landings and hard bermed turns always felt weird to me. Of course it was a cheap bike and my skills would be classified as the low end of advanced.
I think it is a completely stupid review, when comparing it with a full suspension bike. Later in the video even mentioning a E-MTB, I mean dude. I don't want to sound rude, but it's totally dumb. This Cube is the exact model I have and it isn't made for the tracks you ride. It is made for gravel and cross country, mixed with road, and with here and there a challenge. It definitely doesn't need a dropper post, you should get it a suspension post. Wider bar is a good step forward for control indeed. And I noticed the build up on this bike is totally wrong it has the low level SRAM buildup, it should have the Deore or XT buildup with 2 rings up front and 11 or 10 in the back. And it has a lockout, I mean why add a lockout on a track bike? I mean you get a lockout on it to use it on hard roads and long distance variating rides. I also took different handles, Lizardskin. And well I made it into a cross country, long distance MTB, for traveling, so a bike packing bike, and for that purpose it is absolutely great. And sure I have a double suspension as well using it on tracks like you ride here, but everything else I take these Cubes. The Cube Aim Ex I have, and the Cube Acid. The Acid version I have the same buildup as this bike you have, but I use that in the city and gravel stuff is all, for shorter distances. So I guess you seriously need to reconsider doing a better review on this Aim Ex one. Last not least, maybe get a bike fit session for it.
Sry but when u say that its rough and u seem to have trouble to control it its probably the best that u should ride a REAL Trail Harttail cause the thing u're riding is a entry level mtb for beginners this is no hate but thats what im asking myself right now?
sorry but you bought the wrong bike! look at ribble or ragley bikes... they offer enduro Hardtails and not an xc bike like your Cube bike..... these enduro bikes have all you want: 160 mm on the front, 4 piston brakes, a dropper, a 12 speed and a slack headtube angle!
I like to ride fast. If I try to ride a hardtail as fast as my full sus it quickly gets sketchy and scary. Started on fully rigid then hardtails then full suspension. Dont see any reason to go back. Even pro xc racers havent used them for years.

Hey Grigoris - for sure go for the bike with the best frame you can afford to kick your journey off. As Anti says, you can upgrade parts as and when - but the frame needs to be a solid platform to work from. Let us know what you go with 👍
I have a full sus now but im selling it because its not a real sus its very cheap so im buying that bike you had in the video i think its a cube reaction pro becuse its have better forks and gears and rame so hardtail is good for me because i dont jump so much
I've got an On one big dog its really good, only for 1010 pounds with gx eagle drivetrain
Awesome! I just bought an analog :)
Enjoy! 🔥
It's simple: hardtails are for if you spend less than $1500 other than that full sus' are better
Ooh interesting take...
Not at 2022 prices
Can the saddle go full down ?
What was your rebound of your shocks at? It looked like you had it dialed all the way to stiff? That could make a huge difference
Good call - I’ll check 👍🏻
First hardtail in 10 years? What happened to that Ragley from a few months ago? 👀🤔
cc Neill 👀🧐 💴
Matt is a big boy - so unfortunately he wasn't able to ride that Ragley. So we made sure to get him a bike that he could fit on this time!
👀
Get yourself a quality hardtail like a Banshee Paradox or Nukeproof Scout/Ragley Big AL with the same components as your Full squish bike. It will change your life.
Nice call 🙌🏻
Try a long travel hard tail in comparison as you have chosen a basic one
Fair shout.
You had a Stumpy FSR eh? I recently got a 2011 one and it’s amazing so far, even though it’s 11 years old
That's awesome Rebecca!! Where abouts are you riding it? :)
@@chainreactioncycles Rogate DH is my local, heading there this Sunday!
i never adjust my saddle height ever don´t need a dropper seast post either and i ride some steep stuff
Woah, really?

About the Hip Pack: I remember in Deadpool 2 someone saying "Cool hip pack! I also had one in nineteen ninetynever"
Great movie! 👏🏻
Ive got a cannondale trail se 1 with 120mm fork, a real trail HT feels so much different than one of these...
Hi Matt,
I'm considering getting this CUBE Analog but I'm not sure about the size.
I'm 6.2 feet height and I prefer the geometry from L (large size) instead of XL.
Do you think L size will affect that much and the bike will feel small?
What is your height? Cause you used the XL version.
Your response on this is much appreciated.
Thanks!
Hey Denis - I’m 6ft 5. I think you’ll be fine if you want to go with the large, especially given your height. Let me know how you get on 👍🏻 Matt
Idk how you ride a ht w/ pinless flat pedals.
With difficulty 🥵
I like hardtale mtb im use only in road
Are you at Llandegla????
Man, I've been almost killing myself on a Soul SL300 26" hardtail for quite a while. Took me a while to find the right bar, height and all but damn I wouldn't trade it for any other bike (except maybe the 29" version hehe).
Took me quite a while to get it just right as the frame was size 17 and I'm 19 (1.83m, 6'00 I think?) and I didn't really know what I liked to ride/felt comfortable
But once I got it, I honestly think I reached my limits on what upgrading a bike will do. It looks kinda stupid, REALLY HIGH, but damn I love passing guys who spent 4x more than me and then see me, with curved bars, 26" wheels, all around goofy mfer just passing through.
That sounds a bit like an old vintage MTB to be honest or do you have one from the 2000s?
1k sounds expensive for a good hardtail, the Canyon Stoic and Rockrider AM100 hardtail are higher end and costs less
Car park?? Parking lot👍
We say car park in the UK
Like bin vs trash can 👍🏻🗑
In the sense that “car park and bin” are correct and “parking and trash can” are incorrect….
I never like with hard tails was the feel of the nose dive due to suspension in the front only. The change in geometry off hard landings and hard bermed turns always felt weird to me. Of course it was a cheap bike and my skills would be classified as the low end of advanced.
Where abouts r theses trails
Gortin, Northern Ireland 👍
Very technical with two laps and you're done
Let see some upgrades.
Stay tuned Bruce! Upgrades are coming.
Never go in dry.
😱
Can you give me the hardtail if you don't use it hahahahahah😅
😆
So true
Go and try to make a video with a trail or Enduro Hardtail 😜
👀
anyone else notice the bike in the thumbnail is missing a chainstay
👀
I mean who doesn't ride a hardtail as a kid?? Lol
Very true Barbell! Do you have a hardtail now?
Ride a Canyon Stoic or comparable modern trail hardtail and then we'll talk!
👀
Should have tested a proper aggressive hardtail
Soon 🤞🏻
Sry but when u say that its rough and u seem to have trouble to control it its probably the best that u should ride a REAL Trail Harttail cause the thing u're riding is a entry level mtb for beginners this is no hate but thats what im asking myself right now?
Hey Nick - absolutely, there are plenty of 'proper' trail hardtails out there that are more capable. Maybe one to look at for another video?
Shoulda used a nukeproof
I wouldn't put my 1k bike on the floor I know it's a tool at the end of the day but I'm a bike snob.
👍
The thumbnail makes no sense, you put a fullsus on it lmao. I only clicked on this video so I can comment this.
Hardtail was so good we binned the full sus. Yeah? Made you click so job done 🥰 👍🏻👌🏻
These trails make me 💩 my sweat pants 👖. Bloody hell
Nice one Dennis! Where do you ride?
where is it?
@@fxllen6307 Gortin Glens, Northern Ireland.
sorry but you bought the wrong bike! look at ribble or ragley bikes... they offer enduro Hardtails and not an xc bike like your Cube bike..... these enduro bikes have all you want: 160 mm on the front, 4 piston brakes, a dropper, a 12 speed and a slack headtube angle!
"Let's stop talking and start treding" continues down the track like a fucking granny!
😆 harsh
@@chainreactioncycles don't expect you'll ever get a pad on the back from a Dane! No you'll get what I just gave you, when I think you did alright!
@@chainreactioncycles so take it as an compliment.
@@kewsoner7924 🤗
I like to ride fast. If I try to ride a hardtail as fast as my full sus it quickly gets sketchy and scary. Started on fully rigid then hardtails then full suspension. Dont see any reason to go back. Even pro xc racers havent used them for years.
2022 1k buys nothing these days
A 1K hardtail should be compared to a 1.2K full sus
Is there any 1.2k full?
@@gggggggg204 Maybe, a quick search found a Polygon Siskiu D5 for USD1,300.
Wallmart would surely have something nasty.
@@MrUnl0rd I think comparing walmart bike to something branded make no sense. D5 ok, but not market bikes. Plus when i said 1.2k full i thought about something worth to buy ;d
@@gggggggg204 I agree totally. I have bought a 1000£ hardtail before, but immediately updated the fork and breaks to make it decent, so ended up costing close to twice as much.
@@MrUnl0rd I bought even cheaper bike than you and upgrade almost everything ;d Now finally i have full and need to upgrade only brakes.
Give me bike sir
