  • At long last! We finally have it! New Edition’s critically acclaimed “Heartbreak Tour” LIVE from their second show at The Spectrum Philadelphia, PA November 2, 1988! This show would serve as the R&B supergroup’s Final Tour for nine years. Also notable is the replacement of Bobby Brown with the vocal powerhouse Johnny Gill. Gone is NE’s Bubblegum Pop sound of yesteryear as Gill’s addition rendered a more mature sound which really shines through in this recording. Highlights include “Cool It Now,” a masterful medley of Number 1 ballads, a lengthy rendition of “Boys To Men” featuring Gill’s velvety voice which takes everyone in the room to church! The song also serves as an autobiographical moment for the young men who recently navigated themselves through a very pivotal moment in their personal and musical lives. Further highlights include another autobiographical tune, “Can You Stand The Rain,” which features a new arrangement with an added horn line in what was the most beautiful live vocal and musical arrangement of the song ever. Johnny used his voice as a paintbrush throughout the ballad. Pure magic! And also, upbeat renditions of “NE Heartbreak” and “If It Isn’t Love.” What’s also so striking about this recording is the fact that this could very well be the hallowed night where a group of hopeful young vocalists ran in to Mike just before he left on the tour bus and sang for him. That group would later become ANOTHER one of the most iconic R&B groups of all time known as Boyz II Men! Imagine if this was THAT night! There are so many levels to the magnitude of this recording. This recording serves as an extremely rare time capsule of New Edition during the most emotionally pivotal, iconic and defining era of their careers. Barely out of their teens (save for one or two) these young men delivered a flawless performance of a lifetime exemplifying their growth as entertainers and individuals. New Edition was on top of the world, and a blind man could see it. One can only imagine what could have been if they were able to keep their personal differences to the side, and remain focused on what made them one of the greatest groups of all time: The Music.

    Brooke Payne deserves to be mentioned in a “top choreographers of all time” type genre for his contributions to rnb male choreo. He consistently crafted complicated and complex dance routines that seemed to defy what's conceivable or thinkable. This is why (IMO), his dance sequences are like one of the “wonders” of the world, in the world of choreography. I’ve always been fascinated by brilliant choreo (whether tap, ballet, modern dance, movie musicals, musical theatre, or whatever have you). But BP's artistic inventiveness sets him apart as being among the BEST. As we all know, Paula Abdul became a household name for her work with Janet in choreo circles, but in my opinion, Brooke Payne’s name isn’t mentioned enough.

      Touring is how they eat so that cant put concerts on DVD. I'm sure they'd rather this entire concert not be here where they don't make a dime off it. They still do these same routines.

    • @ronniebobbyedition993
      @ronniebobbyedition993 3 года назад +7

      @@terranceharris4686 While touring is how they eat, so is selling merchandise and advertising. Beyonce, Jay-Z, MJ, Janet, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Usher, and more have made a killin selling concert DVDs and advertising why folks should come to their shows. To this day, many folks have never been aware of the type of show New Edition puts on. Well now it's all out here on RUclips for free.

      @@ronniebobbyedition993 Bruh, I hear what you are saying but there is one major difference between NE and the people you named and it's those people make major money on just making albums and as Ralph once said money off album sales have never been huge for them so their money comes from touring. Keep in mind they haven't made a record in almost 17 years so their sole income comes from hitting the road. Selling concert DVDS of the same music and same routines probably would hurt them at the gate. You have to wonder why there is a reason that nit just them but The Jacksons, Temptations and O'Jays or even Prince never did a concert DVD either. Something tells me they don't make the kind of money you believe.

    • @ronniebobbyedition993
      @ronniebobbyedition993 3 года назад +10

      @@terranceharris4686 Those that never released concert DVDs have not thought outside the box. It's a very old school way of thinking. It's true, New Edition never made money through album sales. As a matter of fact most artists never make any money off of album sales - unless they write, produce, or have independent labels. They make their money touring - which is why Jay-Z and Beyonce always hit the road. Let me use Wrestling as an example. Back in the day, big matches rarely were aired on tv, as the tactic of wrestling promotions were designed to lure fans to the arena thru sold seats. Nowadays, big matches are shown on tv. This new tactic is designed to lure fans to arenas. The rationale is, "the show you're seeing on tv, you're going to see when you attend a live arena". I can understand when the likes of artists and comics don't want people to see their act too soon. But these days, after an artist's act has made the rounds, they eventually release a DVD for fans to buy. Some acts don't want their act to ever be seen, because they aren't good. But that's not the case with New Edition. They put on a masterpiece of a show. I always see them in concert. Their routines haven't changed.....but you know that you're going to get your money's worth every time you see them perform live. There are so many acts that are forgotten, because no footage of them exists. New Edition wouldn't get the accolades they get if it weren't for videos and RUclips.

I missed a few days of school because I was love sick, and my mom told me I couldn’t go to another concert until I was old enough to handle it 😂. I went to plenty of concerts after that, including, Jodeci. Now I will get to see them again at the age of 46, all in one show in Cincinnati, in March! It’s funny how life comes full circle. The way he spun around and snatched the mic off the stand and went around it and started dancing. 😍 Don't care what they talking, RT is the sexiest, smoothest dancer on that on that stage. When Boyz II Men met Michael Bivins, it was not after a Heartbreak Tour show as the NE Miniseries showed.
    It was actually backstage at a concert in Philly called “PowerHouse” for the local hip hop radio station Power 99 FM in February 1990. Michael Bivins was there as one of the hosts......This was right before Poison was released.
    Funny how stories are changed over time just to make the story seem more interesting.

    What a treat to start the year off. Just like everyone commenting on the post, I have been waiting on a full fledge concert from the Heartbreak era for a good while. I seen some footage here and there on youtube and tv outlets. I was only a baby at that time so i couldn't go to concerts until i became an adult in later years. I am a 33 year old young man with an appreciation for timeless music. Watching this concert made me wish i could have been an adult during that era when r&b and hip hop were on a rise. Had the honor of seeing most of those legends in recent years in concert as seasoned artists (N.E., B.Brown, BBD, MC Hammer, Force MDs, Ice Cube, LL Cool J, Eric B and Rakim, MC Lyte, Public Enemy, SWV, Teddy Riley, Keith Sweat, Kci and Jojo, Mint Condition, Tony Toni Tone, Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, Kid N Play, DJ Spinderella (Salt N Pepa) and others).

    • @PurpleRain500
      @PurpleRain500  4 года назад +6

      Wow you’ve seen some giants! I unfortunately didn’t grow up in that era either being only 23. But I’ve seen some giants as well for starters I saw PRINCE, Stevie Wonder, Madonna, Phil Collins, New Kids On The Block, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, Salt ‘N Pepa, and Naughty By Nature. I just try to get the most out of the legends that we have left. We’ve lost SO many and there aren’t too many left. NE is one of the last on my list to see, and I’m just waiting for them to get it together so I can see ALL SIX at once! They really need to get a grip and stop dissing Ralph and Johnny.

At that time (late 80s and early 90s) when a lot of those legends were in their prime, i was a little boy and couldn't go to concerts until i became older in the 2000s. Hopefully one day i can catch Troop here in Dallas very soon. This has been a long time coming, I worked really hard editing this video and restoring the audio which originally sounded flat and was panned to the left (coming out of only one ear of headphones). It was a labor of love but well worth it! This deserves to be seen by the WORLD, not rotting on a shelf over at Universal or in the hands of private collectors.
