    Built one of those when I was a kid (1970's, with the old style pop cans). We used lighter fluid, into the bottom can, then swung the "cannon" like a base ball bat a couple times to vaporize the lighter fluid, then immediately lit it. BOOM!

    • @RayNavarro7
      @RayNavarro7 3 года назад +3

      Exactly. We did the same in the 70s. Shake the whole contraption a number of times like a spray paint can, then light at the whole at the bottom edge of the bottom can. The balls would easily go 60-70 yards.

      I did the same, using tall beer cans I'd find. Worked really well, always wanted to make one to show my now grown kids, but need tin cans not aluminum, bummer.

    Put the ignition hole on the side of the cylinder so you can rest it in the ground to get better distances

  • @davidbean5807
    @davidbean5807 3 года назад +11

    When I was a kid we cut the can lids halfway and folded them under, making sure each was cut on opposite sides. Then we would put them together so that each can matched holes with each other. This kept more vapor in the bottom half of the cannon longer. We used lighter fluid as well and just shook the cannon after adding the tennis ball. And our ignition hole was on the side of the bottom can and not under the cannon.

    In the early 70s, soda cans were made with a thick, straight-sided cylinder, had a large, removable pull tab, and a top and bottom that could be removed with a can opener. They were the perfect diameter. We did nothing to the bottom can except remove the tab and punch a hole in the side (not the bottom - you could stand ours up on the ground without losing fluid). Then, we removed the top and bottom of 4 or 5 more cans (4 total is actually sufficient) and taped them together. We just dropped the ball all the way to the top of the bottom can (All of that extra expansion space isn't needed). We could get 50 to 100 feet shots, depending on how much lighter fluid was used and the angle at which we held it.

    Ether/diesel starting fluid works the best. Close second is aerosol hair spray.

    We used to use beer cans,they were at that time made of steel. This paper thin aluminum now would melt or explode at the seams. They are tight fit, plus the opening was enough to allow lighter fluid to flash off into vapors.

The big difference I see is that people would swing these these in a circle for 20 seconds or so and then ignite it. With plenty of fuel the tennis ball will go very far with loud boom!

    To best use it you have to make multiple chambers in the bazooka, then shake it vigorously and yes you need the ball to be much tighter and it does not need to go so deep inside, when we built some when i was a kid, the tennis ball was just pushed to the bottom of the first can, you need as much space as possible and chambers that can be filled with fumes for a best drastic results. The result in speed and distance is only a small fraction of what we managed with our bazookas. We also tried different fuel, usually because of availability and has to not raise our parents suspicions . The way we used it, I estimate that we could send tennis balls at least 400 or 500 feet straight up. Also we didn't need a sort of stopper for the ball because it was so tight that it could only go as far down as our hand could push it.

      FallingJuiceBox their isn't enough space for two scopes. Each scope takes at least half them for the rings and the long range scopes extend past the upper in both directions even for cheap ones. They already make a red dot on magnified zoom combo they run $299-1,000 USD.

    When I was young and did this we used steel soda cans as they fit the tennis balls tighter. The best fuel to use is calcium carbide or miners lamp fuel. We would put two or three "rocks" through a keyhole in the bottom can, add water, wait about 20 seconds and then ignite it. Tennis balls would regularly go 100 to 150 yards high.

    I've made them with energy drink cans and duct tape. Tennis ball fits almost perfectly in the cans with almost no gap. Also used 91% rubbing alcohol as fuel for it and it doesn't take long for the fumes to disperse

    This is a modified potato cannon. You can make the same thing using 4 cans (normal Campbell soup can) stuff a potato in there and it's meant to be fired straight up in the air. Compression and air/fuel mixture is really important. Put butane lighter fluid in the ignition chamber (make the hole very small on the side) Next, throw the cannon into the air and spin it at least three times. Light "Boom" !!!! Now if you want to use a tennis ball, get cans that you really have to cram the ball in there, after a few shots the "fuzz" gets burnt off and the ball can be inserted with some help. Your results will be AMAZING!!! BE CAREFUL!

    DO A CATHODE RAY TUBE, use your vacuum chamber and add an anode and a cathode on each side, It's should work, those are the basics of a ray tube, you could also bend it with very strong magnets! High voltage bendable rays, you've got to do it !

    You should take the tennis ball Cannon and modify it to shoot the archery tag arrows. It could be like a mortar.

    I used to make them when I was a kid, when tennis ball cans were made of metal. Tape two together punch a small hole at the bottom a little lighter fluid and boom.

    This is awesome! I’m in the process of making my own cannon for New Year and Independence Day but will be using ABS/ PVC and Calcium Carbide. Can you make a video with the same ideas, I might learn a thing or two.

    Use four Aylmer tomato soup can and a 3mm drill bit on the Side of the first can down 👌🤓

    Keep the bottom can intact...put your hole on the side and stand it upright. Steel soda cans were the preferred building tool..and I poured lighter fluid in the from the top...spun it around. Want real fun? Soak the tennis ball...and it's FLAME ON!

    If you made that foam a little bit bumpy on one side would it not introduce spin on the ball allowing the ball to move faster or higher or further or something

    You can use the 3-pack tennis ball cans and tape them together into a cannon for a tighter fit

    You need to use Campbell's Soup cans but the tennis ball will be a little bit too tight for it so you cover it in lighter fluid and burn a lot of the hair off so it fits nice and snug down in there. We've shot those things so far up into the sky that you couldn't even see the ball anymore

    Your problem is not the fuel you are using, lighter fluid works great. Your problem is your combustion chamber is too big. When I made a tennis ball canon about 50 years ago, I used the smaller Campbell's soup can like a tomato soup can size and attached a tennis ball can on the end. That is as far as the ball went in. What you did with the larger cans should be fine also but your design flaw is in the bottom can. You have a small hole in the end for squirting the lighter fluid and lighting but you have the other end of your bottom can open. It should only have a hole in the center about the size of quarter, you know, a 25 cent piece. It is harder to clean and dry out before assembly but give that a try and hold on tight because it kicks like a shotgun, one hand won't enough, and sounds like one too. I used to hold it and a friend would put a match to the hole. All you need is one small squirt of naphtha/lighter fluid and mix thoroughly.

    You should make some glowing paintballs! You could use some glowsticks or something like that glows

    The foam idea was nice but what about making a sabot, or using the tubes that the tennis balls came in as they are a closer diameter than the cans.

    Back in the 1970’s sodas came in tin cans. We would also wrap the tennis ball 🎾 with electric tape. We would stand it straight up in middle of the street and make a trail of lighter fluid for a fuse. Most of the time we would get the ball back at times it would come down next block over and didn’t get ball back.

    In the Philippines we make these for new year not for launching projectile but to create loud noises. The holes in our can are smaller and gets bigger as it goes to the tip and then use a plastic bottle with the cap have lighter cricket (the one that causes spark) ot the bottom and flying tiger (this is brand name its a kind of alcohol) as fuel

    Use duck tape next time at each can segments to hold it strongly together. Use a small squirt of zippo or ronsonol lighter fluid in the bottom hole of the bottom can and You have to swing the thing like a golf club 10-12 times until the fluid becomes vapor. Once the bottom surface of the bottom can feels cold, it’s ready for ignition.

    The addition of gloves makes it appear as a possible criminal activity... :^) I used soda cans as a kid, and duct tape to hold them together. Most of the time we just lit it up -- nice big booms on July 4th--didn't even fire a tennis ball.
