I Visited the Miami of Manila and was Shocked! 🇵🇭

- When Americans first think of Manila, they probably don't think of skyscrapers, luxury condos, and infinity pools. The upper class neighborhood of Mandaluyong is home ballers, Filipino celebrities, and it shows that Manila is a city on the rise.
Today, I'm exploring Bonafacio Global City (BGC), one of the most popular and energetic mall areas in all of the Philippines. I'm challenging myself to only eat and drink the foods that locals recommend to me, which quickly turns out more difficult then I thought.
Along the way, I might some really nice people, eat some amazing traditional Filipino food, and also take a detour to see how the less-fortunate people live.

I’m so in love with the Philippines! Where should I go next, and what should I eat?
Laupu Laupu..you have to try real pork mask sisig..it's awesome.
Depends if you like the city, beaches, mountains, outskirts…
Smokey mountain and bring lots of food for the poor people....
Or diving, surfing, whale shark interaction, camping ( raw or light camping), wholesome nightlife etc….
Try Jollibee Bro Brent
The kids you ask where is BGC it's not messing you. They said the right way because if you are going to commute using a public jeep There's a specific road way for a public jeep. Because in metro manila there's a specific road way just for a public jeep to commute.so that if you use a goggle map it's only effective if you have a car service or grab or taxi. That is why there's a different kind of vehicle that we use on public transportation here in the Philippines.
"Asked" dahil past tense na. Nangyari na.
it is not a "specific road".. the right term is "route".
@@Scamander1417 as a native English speaker, kindly STFU. It doesn't matter. He was understood clearly.
@@solo8827 >>> its basically the same thing bro...dont use american term with international...its like you telling filipinos's its not kilometers, its miles lol
@@ThisIsHarderThanIThought if you check the whole context of his sentence, it's off.. for me, what he said is like telling the people that there are roads that jeeps are not allowed.
Whenever you talk to a filipino bystander asking for direction and stuff. They're not laughing at you, they are laughing at themselves because they don't speak english everyday so they are not used t3o it. Just to clear that out so don't think that they are trolling you or anything. Lol
also, they are more shy to speak english in front of their friends than in front of you😂 after you leave, they will most likely laugh at how they sounded to each other while speaking english 😂😂😂
Just one correction; especially in Manila, they probably speak taglish at least if not English everyday…but it’s the shyness for sure.
@@khonix08uy did you just described me ?🙈
@@khonix08 I noticed that when they consume alcohol, their English gets really good because of lower inhibition.
Correct 💯
Those kids are telling the truth. The other side of that road is already BGC (Kalayaan Avenue side). You were under the newly built flyover connecting BGC to Ortigas Center. If only you listened to them, you could have reached your destination in less than 5 minutes. The direction they pointed at is the 8th Avenue of BGC going to Uptown BGC. I used to traverse that road everyday going to our office in BGC.
He didn't believe them. The reason those kids are smiling.
That’s we’re rich Filipino had their breakfast on sat / sun with their super car park on the road side.
I think he was traversing the Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge beside his condo (Acqua Private Residences in Mandaluyong). Nonetheless, the kids were correct, pointing at the direction where EDSA and BGC are.
Unless you're Hussain Bolt, it's much more than 5 minutes walk from Acqua in Mandaluyong to BGC High Street - it's about an hour by foot or 20 minutes by car.
Exactly there’s a lot of ways going there… just trust the locals… don’t be too smart in a place you have never been… you expression not so good. You made them a liar…
The young lady from Cebu displayed a charming presence. By choosing to wear "maong" pants without sunglasses, she highlighted her cute and beautiful features, which really stood out. It's a great reminder of how simple choices can enhance one’s natural beauty.

Wild flower restaurant where rich people , millionaires love to go there on Sunday morning for breakfast. They’re super cars just lining up on the road side.
They're not messing with you, they're embarrassed that they could not give you a clear direction. It's a cultural thing. Instead of being rude, we smile or laugh at ourselves that we couldn't help more. Hope that clears that up. 🙂 I watched your UST video and loved it! Also, if you're looking for great coffee, that would be in Batangas and the South of the Philippines. Cheers from Davao City! 😊

It's been 53 years since I've been in the Philippines, but I love it when you get these American Vloggers who go the Philippines without doing their homework!!! I wish him the best in his travels, but I'd stay out of a lot of areas in Manila! He keeps saying he wants to find the real Filipinos. You'll find "real" filipinos everywhere, but you'll find different economic circumstances depending on where you go. If he wants to find province life, hire a driver and pick a spot on google maps to travel to. Once outside a major city, you'll see how the less affluent filipinos live, but despite their economic circumstances, you'll find the filipinos very friendly!

What I love about the Philippines as a Filipino, Philippines have a good & bad side but I can say that Filipino are resilience, We experienced so many hardship. Our country GDP are not that high compare to other country in southeast Asia, our capital have been largely destroy in the past war but we stand firm and even until now we are the most disaster country in the world, we experienced volcanic eruption, earthquake and each year we experienced 20 typhoon some of the typhoon are strong that affects economy, our tourism, destroy root crops, houses, establishment, cars and also lost so many lives. Some countries maybe looking down on us but I must say we experienced many hardship that makes us strong whatever battles we may face, we will keep standing.
Shut up bro
True
You are so right.
are resilient, not are resilience.
Nah, that area is only for the middle class. The rich Filipinos live in gated communities like Forbes, Dasmarinas, Urdaneta, Greenhills, San Lorenzo and Corinthian Gardens.
I'd say middle and upper middle class for sure. But I totally agree. A lot to the upper class are in those exclusive gated communities you mentioned.
I think for someone to be able to afford a 60 to 90k monthly condo rent is pretty rich. Those areas you mentioned are SUPER RICH.
Realtor here. Those are rich subdivisions sure, but you can't say BGC residents are middle class. Maybe some are, but a lot are rich. Pacific Plaza, Essensa, Gallery Suites, and especially Horizon Homes at Shangri-la, are only a few of the very expensive condo's with ultra rich residents. Sure many owners don't live there and only lease them out, but still a lot actually reside in those condos.
Their condo dues alone are equivalent to a monthly amortization, reaching ranges of 30k and up.
The ultra rich also owns properties in BGC and Makati condos. Why didn't it cross your little mind that rich people owns multiple properties.

So many foreigners retire in places like Cagayan De Oro, Davao and Samal island. There are big retirement communities there. Foreign people can buy non-land based real estate (condos) but you will need a Filipino partner to buy a land-based home.Mindanao is also way cheaper than Manila or Luzon. Were thinking early retirement in a couple of years (were early 50s) but dont plan to buy a property in the Phils. We are just staying in long term airbnbs and only stay there during the winter months of Canada.
Fun Fact: Sisig is one Filipino that the late Anthony Bourdain fell in love with and he considered it as "The Gateway to Filipino Food".

Usually when it is local coffee, what comes to mind would be Barako coffee from Batangas. Not sure though when you made your video, if it is this late Oct period, unfortunately, Batangas is in a state of calamity due to the aftermath of storm Kristine.
I remember when I went back to the Philippines, I enjoyed having coffee and pastries at a pastry shop called Cafe Mary Grace. But it is common that the favorite go to shop for coffee is usually Starbucks.
Just enjoy bro... Welcome to Our beautiful Country 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
Some good local coffee shops in Metro Manila are Chapter Coffee, But First Coffee, Daily Habit, and SGD Coffee. Would be worth the try for sure although those coffee shops aren't really in the Makati or BGC area. Most Filipino coffee chains are in Quezon City.
The kids were not lying, If u walked straight JP Rizal Extension, you Will reach univer of Makati, turn right and you Will see bgc uptown area.
BGC isn’t just a local hangout; it’s more of an international enclave.
Love your enthusiasm and thanks for showing us around BGC... another place to add on my list of places to see in Asia.
The place you are staying at is Acqua Residences, it is a middle/upper middle class comminity, the one across is Rockwell which is upper middle class, both communities are for the more affluent, including also BGC. I also rented an Airbnb just about where you did and it could have been the same building, lol. You had a long walk to BGC fr across the river, I suppose.
The average young Filipino is not familiar with distances (as in kilometers or miles) bc they don't drive like here in the States and they're not usually good with giving directions based on my experience. Trolling is far fr their minds--they're just shy. Filipinos are a friendly culture and they will readily talk to you and smile despite their shyness.
You're making me want to visit there again and enjoy all the great food. Thank you for making this video.
Brgy is short for barangay. Some filipinos is not yet quick to find english words to reply to you. They can smile out of shyness too..they are shy not only to you but to other filipinos who would hear them speak to you in English and later get teased😊
The coffee shop behind you while you were eating in Manam is my recommendation for BGC/Philippine’s best coffee. It’s a local brand, and one very high quality.
Brent the Crazy Rich Filipinos live in Makati or Ayala in Alabang. But so good to hear you’re going to Cebu. I want to see that city one day!

It's a Holiday, dude. It's All Souls Day in the Philippines. People mostly return to their provinces to visit relatives who have passed away. Go to Poblacion in Makati at night to find the best coffee you are looking for. Anyway, just randomly walk so you can discover things that are unique to you. Batangas the southern part of the provinces in Luzon produces good coffee beans so expect to have local coffee shops there. You may visit the nearby mall in BGC called Market Market for some local goods.

I like how the ladies from Cebu were so honest of not knowing any coffee shop in the area and not just mentioned any coffee shop that seems popular in the country like Starbucks, plus they promoted Cebu for it has locally owned and operated coffee shops.
The kids don't lie they pointed you a way which is not suitable for walking and your google map tells you a way were you can conveniently walk and you will finally realize if it's short or long cut bec sometimes google and waze map are not that good in directions
I appreciate you being honest about what you really see. I think when foreigners give out their real opinion based upon experience, some local people in charge can see it as an area to improve. With everyone hoping and praying to see it happen sometime in the near future.

BGC/The Fort was a former US Military base. The development of commercial, business, and residential started in 95, which was decades ago. Not just 10 years ago.
You are not in Manila, you are in Metro Manila. Manila is the old city while Metro Manila is a conglomeration of several cities with Manila, Makati, Pasay, Pasig, Bonifacio Global City, etc.

Angkan Coffee is the local coffee brand that you're looking for! I saw a video post about it a few months back and it's cool to actually offer local coffee made from coffee beans harvested around the PH (Batangas, Sagada, etc.) to the locals. I haven't been back to Manila in a decade so I can't say how good it is.
Sizzling sisig is usually made of a pig's face (jowl and ears). It's best when sprinkled with some calamansi (local lime fruit) and local chili peppers (for that spicy kick), eaten with plain rice and paired with ice-cold San Miguel beer.

Sure the very rich indeed live in the exclusive gated communities, but there are plenty as well who live in the high end BGC condo's.
Essensa, Pacific Plaza, Arya, and especially Horizon Homes at Shangri-la, are only a few examples of condo's that range from 30M to 300M (yes meron, yung sa Horizon Homes), with actual unit owners residing in their units.
The condo dues alone, paid monthly, are the equivalent of a monthly amortization, ranging from 30k up. Not to mention condo utilities for daily AC use. They're that rich.

Love the way you're impressed and in wonder at everything. Keep up the great work. Good nice first impressions of Manila. Well done. 😍 But you'll need to come back again and again to get the full picture. Get a guide.
Brent, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf by the way is now a Filipino company. It was recently acquired by Jollibee Corp.
NO WAY! Wow, I see that brand all over. Thanks for subbing.
and because you featured Manila, Philippines, my country, I will subscribe to your nice channel . 😊. Yes, most likely those guys doesn't really know where BGC is, apologies for those guys, yup they are more shy than fooling around. Yup, Filipinos are naturally friendly
This video is NOT in Manila.
Acqua is in Mandaluyong. Rockwell is in Makati. BGC is in Taguig.
Each one is a city on their own separate and distinct from Manila. "Manila" refers only to the small but capital city at the west coast of the NCR.
I lived in Germany where houses look the same except those in cities but no high rise condos like where u live in Manila. We Filipinos live differently depends on the status here in Manila where there are richest, rich, poor and poorest. You might be surprised how the Russians live in Russian Village in Samal island where they live simple life in the nature near beaches. Correction those young boys didnt tell u the wrong way to bgc, u just dont know how to go on the other side.
Yeah valentina.. jelena once live there...andrei is in vacation right now with his family
Yes, some of the poorest end up living in the cemeteries shared with the dead.
Thank you for doing this, I never knew how much I miss the Philippines until I saw your video. New Subscriber here!
The people you asked for best place for coffee are not residents of BGC so they won’t know. Caravan Black, Angkan and Because Coffee are good choices. We live in BGC. The people who work at the shops do not make enough money to buy good coffee.
