    Great explanation Matt , I am a former steroid user & I can tell you from experience the number one thing that anabolic steroids do for you is that they make you feel super human .So not only does your strength go through the roof so does your confidence & this makes you better at absolutely every single thing you do . Imagine all your physical abilities amplified ,even for a non professional athlete like me this was an amazing feeling that I will never forget & it took me years to not think about it every time I went to the gym or did anything physical.
    So for a professional finely tuned athlete to take steroids is a huge advantage .

      You make such an important point that even most steroid users don’t realize. The placebo/psychological effect they give to your confidence (even if your not on them but think you are) will make you perform better. But you shouldn’t take steroids or have them in your system during the season when your playing because they slow your muscles down, therefore bat speed, throwing, velocity, running speed. Your supposed to only use them in the off season to build strength, and then get them out of your system before spring training. Bodybuilding is totally different because it’s not a physical performance sport, it’s a visual sport judged on the way you look, not physical performance.

    You broke that down masterfully. I always sigh when people trash Bonds for his accomplishments not realizing that the entire era, most players were taking steroids. He was leveling the playing field by doing what he did, but that doesn’t take away the fact that he hit those home runs. I remember when he took the batting coach job for SF after retirement and there was rumors of him still crushing them into the stands just farting around at batting practice, and he’s much smaller body mass now that he bikes so much. He deserves HOF in my opinion. That’s a great topic for a future video? What players in your opinion deserve to be in the HOF that currently aren’t? Maybe a top 10? And explain a little why? Love you channel

    • @ssimpson3288
      @ssimpson3288 6 лет назад +4

      I'm of the opinion that Bonds should be in the HOF because 1. Everyone was doing steroids back then and 2. The commissioner of baseball back then unofficially supported the use of them. Not letting Bonds in when other players who did them were let in is a huge slap in the face to Bonds.
      Personally though I like the much stricter rules on PEDs that Baseball has taken now. Personally for me I find it more fun to see good players do what they're able to do via their own skill over help with PEDs.

    Can you do a video on corked bats?

  • @unclestinky6388
    @unclestinky6388 6 лет назад +6

    I always felt that the stronger guys not only had the advantage of more extra base power but also the advantage of having a better chance of mishits falling in because they were more likely to muscle the ball over or through the infield. A stronger guy can get hits without needing to barrel it up as much as a weaker guy needs to and as a result can get away with lesser hitting mechanics, at least at lower levels.
    And, to help demonstrate the importance of strength, Ted Williams once said that if there was one thing he could do differently it would be to have gotten stronger.
    In his book, Canseco said that he felt an advantage to the additional strength was that he could use a bat with more mass and could more easily maintain his energy and not have to reduce the size of the bat as much or at all as the season went along.

    In my opinion, the majority of the players who admitted to have taken (or tested positive for) steroids, were already amazing players. The reaction time and hand eye coordination isn't improved with the use of steroids. However, the ability to recover from injury is crucial. I feel that the decision to use steroids by many of those players who did, was influenced greatly by the injury aspect. In regard to power, if you are stronger, you will be able to hit the ball at a greater distance. However, many of these players were already great homerun hitters. An interesting fact is that under the rules of the "steroid era" of baseball, steroids were not a banned substance. A great player is a great player. Steroids do offer positive effects. They were not banned at the time. That's my opinion on the topic. :)

    From 1994 into the 21st Century in the MLB, balls became juiced, the strike zone got much smaller, and ball parks got smaller. I believe it was the Selig's and Steinbrenner's wanting to increase hitting at all cost. The only thing you cannot blame on them are the maple bats. In my opinion no one knew how to use maple bats better then Barry Bonds and Alphonso Soriano. Also during the Bonds, Sosa and McGwire era the strike zones really shrunk.

      I really wish we’d get away from the puritanical nonsense regarding juice. You can get laser eye surgery correcting your vision to *better* than perfect, you can have a leg tendon installed in your elbow, you can get stem cells injected to bring your soft tissue back to 18 YOA, and you can tell a doctor that you can’t focus or concentrate and you walk away with an amphetamine permission slip.
      But a hormone that your body used to make more of that can be safely taken, makes you more injury resistant, cuts down recovery time, and makes you feel better overall while enhancing broad spectrum performance? That’s CHEATING, YOU DIRTY LAZY CHEATER! Only aging lawyers and stockbrokers in their mid-life crisis should be able to take that stuff.

And his last 11 years(which which included 4 of his biggest home run years)… he batted 1107 times and struck out 668 times which averaged striking out 60% of the time. So he actually struck out 8% more times his “steroid” years than his “non steroid” years. He WAS NOT seeing the ball better on steroids. But when he did hit the ball….he was hitting lasers!

I remember the first game we played that spring. I suddenly could crush the ball (relative to what I used to be able to do).
    I feel bad for the guys who are on the bubble between levels who get beat out by a guy on steroids. There are so many negative long term health effects for steroids, but down the line, there is this little part of me that would like to see a seniors league where the players were allowed to juice with healthier versions. It might be motivation for over the hill couch potatoes like me to get more physically active.

      Nothing "mimics" HGH, however there is a secretagog (definitely butchered that) which increases the amount of HGH your body normally produces. It would barely make a difference on muscle strength at all, though injuries would heal faster, and bones and tendons would heal much faster which anabolic/androgenic steroids do not do

    The “steroids don’t make you a better hitter” people are delusional, because even if you take away the power numbers and focused solely on hitting, increased strength will make you a better all-around hitter. With increased strength comes increased bat speed. And with increased bat speed comes the ability to catch up to more pitches. And if you’re able to catch up to more pitches, you’re going to make contact and put the ball in play more often.

    I’m not a proponent of steroids but I think players did what they had to do to survive and succeed. To an excess I admit. But I think performance enhancing substance is relative to the era you play in. One example I think of is the holy grail of baseball Babe Ruth. He was known to come to games drunk or even drink in games. It was frowned upon then also. Like most people drinking takes the edge off and allows people to relax. Who is to say that Babe figured out that he couldn’t hit as well due to nervousness and therefore drank to relax. Technically that’s a performance enhancing substance. Just my opinion

    Barry Bonds still would have hit 500 HRs without steroids. Maybe even 600-650. But I do think he would not have eclipsed Hammering Hank. Some of those balls that just cleared the fence would have died on the warning track instead.
    I think that, without steroids, a slimmer Bonds would have been more nimble on the base paths and, though he would have hit less HRs, he would have had more doubles, triples, and stolen bases.

    I think cc Sabathia's take was pretty good he was on a podcast talking about the steroid era and he said he didnt care that they were juiced cause he still knew he could get them at the end of the day you still need to be able to hit it and that holds some weight but I also get not every pitcher is cc and when you get a guy like barry bonds who hits everything anyways and give him steroids ofcourse hes gonna rake because hes not always gonna face killer pitchers who could get him which none could really do it anyways lol

    Here’s the thing, steroids don’t make your hand-eye coordination better, they don’t help you read pitches, they don’t help your mechanics. They make you stronger. For example, give that kid that only hits ground balls steroids, maybe he gets a few hard hit ground balls through the infield and possibly some liners. Now give the person that knows what they’re doing roids. That person will be so much better. It may be just my opinion, but I believe steroids should be frowned upon, but they should not hold someone back from the HOF like Bonds. Dude was hitting the ball 50+ feet over the wall, it would be gone without the roids too, he was a great hitter before, so why punish him for trying to even the playing grounds he was in?

    I do want to meet people who say baseball isn't that long. It's the longest sport in terms of a season. You really do get exhausted from day to day playing every single day. True it isn't as straining on the body as say hockey or football but they don't play as long and don't play every single day.

    Hello Matt, I just saw that play where the Yankees had a wild pitch hit the backstop, and Gary Sanchez caught the ball off the deflection and threw out the runner advancing to third. What has to be the most wacky or ridiculous play you've been a part of? and please, give your opinion on that play. I've never seen anything like it in my life.

    As someone who has taken a lot of 'steroids', I can assure you that they aren't going to make you a better hitter. Stronger..yes. But not a better hitter. They really aren't the big deal that everyone makes them out to be. It isn't like you take a shot in your glute and you suddenly feel like a super athlete. You don't really notice it.

    Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) do make you a better player and athlete in general. There have been numerous peer reviewed studies that cites increased in hand eye coordination, stamina, strength, speed, reflexes, durability, faster recovery time, more mental clarity, etc. If PEDs had no benefits, many cheaters wouldn't have taken them.

    love the way people can post videos about steroids and recovery and muscular growth yet they cant name 3 steroids and how they work. just sad. been in bodybuilding for 20 years and there is no magic drug for recover or muscular growth. recover comes from one thing an that is rest. the primary use for drugs or enhancements is to lower body water level to allow you to look better but they dont not create muscle of nothing. so much misinformation on the internet that leads to young people taking this stuff ending up either dead or in the hospital. because people post videos about things they have no real experience in or understanding of muscularly growth recovery and development work. if they knew how that worked they would realise how stupid it sounds when they say drugs helps the body recover

    No, steroids make you a less fatigued hitter...when fatigue sets in, technique breaks down, it’s in the research for decades...but as with using technology to steal signs, it’s gaining an unfair advantage and if it was good for the game, it would be allowed ⚾️👍

  • @Slippindisc

    Before I even watch this, because I’m sure you’ll get this right but I wanna say:
    Of course steroids make you a better hitter. Forget muscle bound-ness or other silly arguments people will make against it. Forget the strength for a second. Number one, it will increase your focus, speed, drive, and hand eye coordination. It will make you more confident. You can breath more because your Red blood cell count goes up. And YES, your strength goes through the roof. Not just strength but stamina. You can safely work out twice a day without over training (probably, depends on the person) either way, recovery time goes WAY down. Yes steroids improve ball players, or they wouldn’t have to do it to keep up with their peers.
    And it’s sad because juice is the best way to permanently fuck up your body and mind. Wanna have kids some day? No? How about your future wife? Don’t wanna be committed to daily or weekly needles? Sorry buddy, once you quit, you never quite feel “right” again. I might actually make the argument that gear is just as bad as heroin. It certainly can be in its lasting effects. I think if doctors could prescribe and study it maybe it would be safer but... that’ll never happen.
