- Hi tool fans this is an unusual one this week!!!, iv been thinking about tiny drills for getting in awkward spots and found this online, it’s a tamiya hobby drill for modelling!, not the kind of drill a tradesman like me would ever consider getting but I thought let’s think outside the box and give it a test!, quite an expensive drill really for what it is (about £35) and not easy to source but it’s surprisingly good with quite allot of torque and get this it comes in a kit which you have to put together yourself which is quite cool!! The fact that it comes as a assembly kit like a Tamiya model is just grand. It would've been hilarious if the screw holes needed to be drilled out.

Mmmm only slightly but yes and also I should have introduced a little bit of cutting oil when I tryd to drill the mild steel 👊🏻👊🏻
The question is now, can it be hacked with a stronger motor? similar to your DMC300 🧐
Mmmmm possible, the main stumbling block would be the plastic gears inside, if they could be swapped out and a slightly bigger motor fitted and maybe a better chuck and a light it could be a better bit of kit!!, then again that looks like days of work I’d love to do but haven’t got the time to do!!!!, thanks for reaching out sir 🤟🤟
@UKTOOLTALK you could easily also add a reverse function to it. Wouldn't be that hard.

I've used a full size drill with drill bits that do worse job at drilling any sort of metal than this. That's honestly really impressive!

Only real issue here is that this little handril doesn't have stronger gear set + moter power and it's not really ment for steel work might acctuly damage the internal gears with serten abuse. How ever I got one of these in postage I wane use it for miniature stuf building my own panels for knex toys (hobby) maybe RC stuf later on
Impressive performance from that tiny motor and two AAs. It would be pretty easy to fit a small pole-swapping switch if you want to add reverse direction. You prompted me to try some similar tests just now with my little hobby drill, bought over 40 years ago for holing out homemade circuit boards, and odd little jobs I'd now do with a Dremel. No batteries, no pistol grip, no trigger, just cylindrical body and a switch. Proper mini chuck though, capacity up to barely 3.5mm. Runs on a 12V bench supply and feels quite hefty, so expected better than your 3V kit but really wasn't much in it. Abysmal torque, 3mm bit made it through a copper pipe, struggled with a scrap of cheap construction oak, failed on steel sheet. 😕
