When Burnley travelled to Anfield to play Liverpool in January 2021, they faced opposition that had not suffered a Premier League defeat on their own ground in a 68-game run spanning almost four years. But a team led by long-serving manager Sean Dyche upset the odds to record a famous win - Burnley’s first at Anfield in almost half a century.
In the first of two exclusive Coaches’ Voice Masterclasses, Dyche looks back on the challenge facing his team, and how he masterminded such a shock result. He explains the out-of-possession tactics designed to limit the threat posed by Liverpool’s fast and expansive attacking approach, and reveals the strategy to maximise his own team’s threat, both in transition and during their admittedly rare periods of possession.
It gives a fascinating insight into the approach of a coach who knows his team is going to have significantly less possession against dangerous opponents.

Graham Potter and Sean Dyche are top 10 managers over the last 10 years. Without debate... but the secrets they hold and protect each other behind closed doors has stained this nation and destroyed the games integrity... they tried to blame foreign players:then they pushed grass roots to develop English boys to be more technical. Then they tried to blame foreign investment : but look how excited they got at that English billionaire interested in buying man United. Dyche speaks very well. Intelligent bloke. I’d be interested to see his analysis of the win at Old Trafford, which in my opinion was more impressive than this result

what dyche did at burnley is a much bigger achievement than what potter is doing at brighton but because potters football "looks good" he gets way more praise than dyche ever did

Genuinely a very underrated manager. Burnley football has become a somewhat sort of meme because of 442, usually 2 big lads up top etc but they played good football a lot of the time. They pressed well and plaued to their strengths. When Conte sits back and counters its a masterclass but Dyche its boring, brexit football.

Is there an argument that teams like Man City and Liverpool were able to win so many points in recent seasons because most other teams aside from burnley were trying to also play this possession football that City and Liverpool were also going to dominate them in? Like 20 years ago, most lower end teams would always focus on being solid and defensive and build up through direct play, but now it seems like there's an emphasis from everyone to try and play beautiful football all the time. Either way, fantastic insight from Dyche.

Massive respect for this man, he kept Burnley in the prem consistently without any financial investment. In the brutal world of English football that's something to be celebrated.

I'm glad Dyche made a point about the passing style... everyone acts like "long ball" is boring. But Liverpool arguably play the most exciting style of football in the world (when it works) that's because of Alisson, Van Dijk and Trent pinging balls 50-60 yards and ripping teams open... there's a famous impressionist that does Henderson "I love running" because literally Liverpools midfield spends half the game chasing shadows. It's all tactical and each players role is refined and critical for it to work. There's a media myth "liverpools midfield lack creativity" but that's just ignorance, the space created by these runs, and the 50 yard passes, is what gives Salah and Co. The time and space for the 1v1s with the keeper... Dyche is a real football man... and the whole country feels betrayed by the Burnley board... they acted disgracefully
