That brake clean intro never gets old. Smile every time I see it. SMA’s thoughtful content and clever delivery is giving DIYer’s great entertainment as well as great confidence in tackling our own jobs. Thank you Eric for sharing your skills, humor and experience!
I teach my Automotive Technology students exactly as per your instructions. Sometimes they seem perplexed at times because so many people just slap a pair of pads without cleaning or lubricating anything. Some, don't care if rotors that have deep ruts or been damaged by metal on metal due to exhausted pads.
I'm a full-time mechanic but I'm very guilty of pad slapping my junker clunker after metal to metal contact but my work car has 318k miles and it's rotten in half thanks to salt it's not worth a set of rotors and they're beyond turning I grease and clean my brake brackets though no matter what it'd be pointless doing a brake job and skipping that
know where those ruts come from? They're from the tooling marks left by the lathe that turned the raw casting. You need to use a die grinder with a red gasket cookie to polish those marks off before you install them. The smoother the rotor, the better the pads will wear.
Mr. O, the fact you applied FF to the hub is just one of the small details that we the audience love about your work. Something that most shops wouldn’t have done but it’s the small things like that that make you stand out.
YESSSSSSSS, SMA brake job!!!! I was really missing it!! After so many electrical diags!! I needed this SMA brake job to waken my mind!! Haha. More, please, kind, sir!
Literally the only reason I even still watch RUclips is your vids man. If you weren’t on here I would’ve already deleted the RUclips app and that’s the honest truth
No one cold tell me what to use on my slide pins. Your video was clear and concise. My rear brakes were just replaced, but I do have it sticking when there is heavy rain or the day after the car wash. As far as replacing one caliper a mechanic did that which I didn't understand. The other old one 17 year old car was working until I got it. Or it would only work during the rain. That car had to many evap leaks and two many repairs. We sent it out to pasture. You are the cats meow! Nice video.
It's funny you painted the brake bracket. I'm having issues with rust jacking on my wife's car and planned to do just that when I do a brake job in a few weeks.
Being from northern Indiana we always loaded the bit hole with high temp grease as well so next pad change there's still some bit teeth left, great video as always and keep up the good work!

A quick way to loosen rusted on disc rotors is by using an air hammer with a wide tip inbetween the the wheel studs,...caution.. put one wheel nut on a stud to prevent the rotor from falling!!
I have watched tons of Eric videos doing mundane repairs or refurbs like brakes. I just have to watch hoping for a Mrs. O cameo and I was rewarded once again.
A little trick on those torx bolts. Use an air hammer with hammer bit on the caliper to vibrate it while putting tension on the torx bolt. Works every time to get them loose with no broken bits.
YIKES!! Spilled my coffee! It's been a while since the last Brake Cleaner Attack Screen, and I was not prepared. BTW, only the coolest shops have a Shop Kittie!
Eric, after watching countless of your repair videos, I am convinced that there is a sinister deal between the companies that sell road salt to the New York State road maintenance entities and the companies that sell you the replacement parts. Somebody is making a killing.
I've lived in Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio and the salt is used heavily on those states as well. Here in Cleveland we have a massive salt mine about a mile under lake Erie which is where the majority of rust belt winter salt comes from. They send it out in ships and rail cars a mile long. Cleveland, doing our part to help sell new cars.
One thing I love about living in the desert is that it takes cars for friggin ever to rust, ive seen cars from rainy locales 5 or 10 years old completely disintegrating. We had an '85 town car that we only got rid of because it was a gas guzzler, wasn't a sqaure inch of rust anywhere on her 🦊💜🤘
Thanks Eric for teaching me how to do a quality brake job. I have done many since seeing one of your first brake job videos, and have passed on your methods to anyone I have helped.
You inspire me! My Chevrolet needs brakes and I’m going to make a SMA tribute video when I do them! Clearly I watch too many SMA videos. First I gotta dig out my official SMA swag.
I lived in Ontario Canada (Toronto)and did lots of brakes, I would switch my wheels in spring and fall. I would take the slide pins out and lube them every time I had the wheels off otherwise, they would seize up from the salt. The pads would always wear evenly
Last 25 years in Central Florida from St. Louis, and working on cars for years in the rust belt, I felt that not broke in half on the lift comment. My '03 Duramax frame wax is still sticky. In addition to cars never even getting frame surface rust here, living in the most free State in the Union ain't bad either.
I've owned a 2003 Tahoe z71 since new. Of all the vehicles I've owned it has been the easiest to work on...other than when I replaced all of the brake lines. I've done countless brake jobs, and multiple front wheel bearings - all so easy to do: I believe it's 2 bolts for the caliper, 2 for the brake bracket, 3 for the wheel hub and that's it. The hub bearing assembly can be pretty pricey though!
You never fail to remind me of how fortunate I am to live in "Bama! Always like the visit to the office with Mrs.O! You seem to be a blessed man to have such a lady in your life!
When I worked mechanic for Cadillac we had to replace the mounting bolts and we measured the rotors resurfaced them or just remove the glaze in they had Chinese rotors most were at discard when they were new
I'll never lubricate another sliding pin the same again without having a laugh. About how you lubricant one. Never a dull moment with you I swear man I love it. Speaking of breaks I just did that last night popped of both my front calipers to see how my breaks were doing. My findings I found on both were my back two pads were about down to the backing plate. While my outside pad looked brand spankin new. So I cleaned everything greased everything put it back together. Guess I'll be getting some pads
Eric, after watching many of your brake job video's, still enjoy a new brake job. My wife just doesn't understand how I enjoy them with a good cup of coffee in hand !
Yes! Today is the day where I get to see a mechanic paint the brake stuff. One day you will hit the calipers and caliper brackets with paint and I will be so happy. I've always wanted to remove the calipers and paint them, but I'm worried about over torquing the banjo bolt on reinstall because I broke one off when I was a tweenager. One day though, I will remove them and paint them red and have my painted calipers. I also love when you spray the hell out of the brakes with brake clean. All that pad compound gets wet and goes to the ground instead of your lungs. I also understand why you reface the hubs now. It took me like an hour to get a rear rotor off my Toyota. It was rusted on solid. I always put a few dabs of axle grease on the face of the hubs but apparently the previous owner didn't get the memo.
I'm such a child, that Brake Kleen gag just doesn't get old. Nor does tagging along with Eric.

Eric looked like Bob Ross painting happy little pistons. Cadillac uses 2 because everyone needs a friend.
You only forget to pump the brakes before driving it one time. After that you never forget.
I never get tired of the SMA brake videos. Thankyou.
