Love Bea! She is my personal hero. I identified with her from the time I was a child. I was a tall child (I grew to be 5’9”) and often felt awkward. I watched Bea conduct herself with such confidence in every role she played. Little did I know, she, too felt awkward about her height in her younger years. I found confidence watching her. Love her with all my heart! ❤️
5'9 is a nice height for a woman. You don't have to be overly short, but you aren't overly tall. Hope you fully grew into it and learned to appreciate it.
Jaymes Guy, Because they could make fun of BOTH sides, she was a liberal Walter was a conservative, Today's Maude would be bashing republicans while maintaining that only a liberal voice should be supported.
She has forgotten the name of a marvelous comedic actor / dancer called Ray Bolger who starred in Where's Charley on Broadway and won the 1948 Tony, but was more famous as the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz. He had a couple of tv shows in the fifties, the last was a Bolger vehicle in 1957, a musical comedy variety show called Washington Square with a veritable who's who of talent as guest actors performers throughout its brief run. Bea is actually credited as a writer as well as a performer on two of the episodes.
Lovely woman and lovely interview but I wish the interviewer sat closer it seemed like she didnt hear him at times. Also when she was having trouble remembering someone I wish there was a person looking up what she was thinking to refresh her memory.
PS Per Bea’s interview, one of my friends was the CBS censor for several years. I was called occasionally when there was a question about a sitcom’s mention of a certain area related to religion to check for correctness. Speaking of Lear’s irreverent style and in true comedic form, I called my friend a couple of times around Thanksgiving. She didn’t call back which was unlike her. The third time there was a man’s voice on her machine. I called CBS to ask if she was ok, was told that she’d passed and the reason I wasn’t called to attend her funeral is that the person doing the calls ran out of energy by the letter M. Alas, my family name begins with W.
I was a little kid in the 1970s, and while the themes of these shows were fairly grown-up, my parents used the shows as opportunities to talk about some serious issues. I’m glad I got to watch the shows, most of us kids did then. And I’m glad my parents were rational and open about engaging my questions.
I think what Bea means to say is that even if a woman had a starring role (like I Love Lucy) it would always be the MALE perspective that told you at the end of the show what should be listened to...when Cousin Maude arrived on the scene, Archie wasn't the boss anymore....
Hi, RAHbert503. Just for clarification: This interview was originally for a documentary in which the interviewer was never intended to be heard by the audience. The answers were edited and only portions were ever aired. We are presenting it now completely uncut and uncensored because we felt people would be interested in the footage as a historical record of this iconic and beloved actor. What they had to say is worth hearing (much more than what I had to say) The interviewers sound is what it is, unfortunately, and presented without apology. Hope you can enjoy it in that context.
Abortion wasn't used as birth control when the sit com Maude first aired. That's why the subject went over so well in the show. It was life or death, as intended.
Abortion is not used as birth control, and never has been. If you don't like abortion, then you don't have to get one. In the meantime, mind your own business.
No women puts themselves through that trauma as "birth control." Conservatives used to not be a nasty, hateful, mean-spirited death cult that wants to make women slaves to forced birth, which is why Republicans used to not be headed for history's dustbin.
Hi, Mark P Just for clarification: This interview was originally for a documentary in which I was never intended to be heard by the audience. The answers were edited and only portions were ever aired. I'm presenting it now completely uncut and uncensored because I felt people would be interested to hear it - (certainly less so in what I was saying!) The footage is a historical record of this iconic and beloved actor. My sound is what it is, unfortunately, and presented without apology. Hope you can enjoy it in that context. Thanks for understanding. Best, David
This is the topmost talent we all so admire. (I wish that Olympia Dukakis had made it to this series. And Gena Rowlands. And even Anouk Aimee. And Anna Magnani.) On the other end of the age spectrum I watched Shirley Temple in the movie Shanghai and then her bio just before Bea. As punishment Shirley was placed in a box with a block of ice! Then there were the Hollywood sex predators, pedophiles, two famous men in the business which is where Harvey Weinstein surely honed his skills. I wish that I had seen Bea in person just once. Never mind. Am catching up on the few Maude episodes that I can find. Missed ‘em the first time around. I was busy studying in university and rooming with a woman who worked in an abortion clinic for a year who would sometimes invite someone to stay with us when they needed some extra time to heal - a 12-year-old who’d been gang raped and the older Black woman who was the cleaner at the office of the White mayor of a small southern town who raped her… I must find the double header Maude on the subject, especially considering the drama now being unrolled by the Republicans and the Supreme Court including Clarence Pubic Hair Thomas. (If you aren’t familiar with the reference, check the Web.)
Blake West The interviewers are never very good on these Archive clips. They never seem to be paying attention. They ask stupid, inane, prepared questions, rather than have a genuine conversation.
This is really great. What's sad though is I don't understand why the host sounds like he's phoning in his questions and comments from a tin can. I can't hear most of what he says and that is really annoying. I'll keep watching because I absolutely love long interviews but it's too bad the sound is so bad.
Couldn't agree with you more, Yanik. Unfortunately, when we originally did these interviews, we did not anticipate releasing them unedited, and so I was never mic'd. I appreciate your patience with the tech quality though. What these personalities say is worth hearing. (Much more than what I say). Best, David
@@PopGoesTheCultureTV Thanks, David. You are amazing... and very modest because I think your questions deserved to be heard. I just understand the context much better now. Thanks for the explanation.
this is almost hard to watch. she's clearly not well :/. Still mentally sharp enough but DEF struggling and her soul (and the 'Bea' she always was..even just 2-5 yrs before) was rapidly starting to cash out :(
You can tell that Bea looks really frail here. Such a great actress, and I’m being completely honest. If I had met her in real life, I would be terrified. She looks intimidating outside of television, but that’s what makes a great actress.
your comment is confusing. are you being completely honest about thinking shes a great actress or about thinking she looks both frail and intimidating? and is looking intimidating what makes a great actress?? 👎
Yes I prefer Bea to Elaine as well. I never understood Elaine’s appeal. She always came across to me like an angry, sober lush. And sometimes not even sober 😂. I feel Bea was so much better and funnier at comedy. She had much better dead pan looks and a much better way with a line than Elaine. I believe Elaine wanted the same sitcom success in the USA that Bea had. She settled for second rate UK sitcom fame. She did a UK adaption of Bea’s smash US sitcom hit from the 1970’s “Maude” in the early 80’s called “Nobody’s Perfect”. I read that it was horrible. Yes Elaine was great in Broadway in the 1950’s and 60’s but so was Bea.
The 'Abortion Script', regardless of what Ms. Arthur said, was the BEGINNING OF THE END as far as the DEGRADATION of this country's moral's. And I'm a Bea Arthur FAN, but I cold NOT STAND the show 'Maude'!!!!
Liberty GiveMe, I'm sorry but you think a two part episode of Maude started the degradation of the country's morals? Lol. I honestly don't think people are that brainless that they see one show about something and all of a sudden say OK EVERYONE GO GET AN ABORTION BECAUSE MAUDE SAYS ITS OK!!
Michael Harrison I get why you might be opposed to abortion, but what’s wrong with gay marriage. Who’s it hurting if two men or two women are in a relationship?
Every show she was on I have watched. She was a true actress and a Queen at her craft
And funny on the Golden girls
I agree
She was hilarious....I miss her. Definitely a true actress and comedian.
The talent and professionalism was massive. She was amazing. I hope she feels how much she’s still adored.
One of the greatest female comediennes ever.
A technician and master of the craft with ferocious timing.
My favorite actress and what a talented beauty. This hairstyle was very flattering.
I just love her! Such a classy lady.
Hattie Flanagan's funeral was one of my favourite Maude episodes. The way Maude opened the casket and wailed while retrieving the brooch was genius!
Seen Nov 2019
I miss her. A class act.

Miss you Bea Rip
😂 I loved that episode... I just watched that 1 the other day
I love that she mentions the brooch/funeral episode (it's called "Vivian's First Funeral") - i think it's the best episode of the series
That was such a good episode wasnt it?!
Yes. That was one of my favorites also. That episode was the premiere episode of Season 5.

Or Bewitched. A woman with all of the power (magic) but surrenders it to a man who has the actual power (manhood!).
The absolute best I grew up watching Maude
I was so fascinated by Bea
And then the Golden Girls
Bea Arthur was so unique
First There's Bea to and then There's "Maude"
Loved Amanda By The Sea show❣️
"Lady Godiva was a freedom fighter...!"
My favorite when got pregnant

A 4-part interview with Bea Arthur and not ONE question about her working relationship with Lucille Ball?!🔍
Worked with her on what?
@@michaeltrayshawn Mame
So cool u met her did you meet Vicky Lawrence or Lucille Ball which loved both of them.
I even liked Amanda's by the sea.it had some funny sketches in it.
once upon a tune is the "silly" show she is talking about
I love Maude. Funniest sitcom ever.
My favorite too
Ray Bolger had the TV series Washington Square.
I think alittle bit of who she really was , was in those characters.
I think Dorothy was more like her but Bea loved Maude more though.
Just curious.. Why does this guy sound like he's screaming at her from another room?
