Cancer Diary 2: Feelings on Starting my First Chemo Initial Chemotherapy Side Effects

- I took my second cancer journey video in the hospital a few days after starting my first dose of chemo. This shares my initial feelings after starting chemotherapy, as well as my first side effects. My specific combination of meds is called DCF. My largest side effects were neuropathy, peeling hands, and dry mouth and then later on really bad mouth sores.
These are some of the things I used to help with the side effects from the chemotherapy.

What an example in strength and resilience baby girl's getting from her mom. I wish the example wasn't necessary, but since the challenge is here uninvited: you both are rising to it with grace. May treatment side effects be as minimal and the succes be as great as possible. Rooting for you both!
Thank you so much 💛 she has been both the biggest motivation to stay positive and the brightest light to look to when that is hard.
@@mayaluna11 She's not still pregnant!! Her daughter has been delivered and is now in the NICU. , WHY is she having to be unhooked from her IV's and gowned up to see the baby , if she's still in the womb?🙄🤔
@@jacqueline8559 Thanks so much. Somehow I managed to miss that completely. My ADHD struck again 🤡. Rooting for baby girl in the NICU.
I'm a Neonatal nurse. Your baby is now at some risk of picking up an infection. There are viruses' and bacteria in Hospital Units , even coming through the heating/ air conditioning systems. That's just the way it is. A fact of life in every single Hospital environment and Ward and, indeed, everywhere we go outside too .They decided delivery was the best route for her, at her current size and gestation, so she wasn't affected by chemotherapy drugs in any way. In balance, that WAS the best thing to do for her! NOW they have to treat , and protect her, as if she were still in your womb . Meaning, (1) supporting her to develop her feeding reflexes, ( that CANNOT BE TAUGHT) It will develop in your baby's own time and is often 1 step forward and 1step back. It takes patience on the part of the parents!
(2) To maintain her temperature within normal range.
(3), To try to prevent infection when handled....so, you need to be gowned up, if that's your particular Hospitals' policy for Neonates. Also, and very importantly, patients receiving Chemotherapy have a very reduced Immune System so are at considerable risk of getting Infections. The gowns may well be necessary to protect YOU from picking up an infection. There is so much that is normal and routine to us, as Staff who are experienced and know about Neonatal Care Or Oncological Care. Ask THEM about the many things you don't understand, rather than questioning it on your Vlogs . That way you'll, hopefully, gain more knowledge and peace of mind , regarding you and your daughter's care. You need to learn to question more as you've got a long journey ahead. Not questioning your symptoms, in exactly the same way, actually delayed your diagnosis. You need to know how to advocate for your own body, and learn what/why things are happening around you. I hope you're able to rest and sleep really well, and that the remainder of your Chemo is as comfortable as possible for you. Hope your baby is soon thriving and beginning to regain her weight.( It's normal for babies to lose weight, then regain it again)
The timing of this must be so overwhelming. Bad enough having cancer but at this crucial time just makes it so much more challenging. But one day you will look back and be amazed to see how you came through it.
You are such an inspiration to people who are struggling with serious illness!! God is going to get you through this so you can take care of your beautiful baby girl, and enjoy motherhood with your baby and wonderful husband.
I'm sorry you've also joined the cancerstyle club. I'm terminal, spinal cancer and fractured vertebrae and sternum. Bone cancer with mets galore t/out my body. Please take comfort in knowing you are not alone. The cancerstyle (lifestyle) is full on with good and bad days. If you need to cry, cry. If you need help, reach out, help in the support has been extremely challenging for me as I'm socially isolated so I have that extra challenge but going onto antidepressant and valium for anxiety have helped me a lot. I keep you and your family in my prayers 🙏❤🇦🇺🌻
Sending loving energy to you, sweetie...🙏
I am so sorry to hear this! Thank you for reaching out and sharing your story and advice. Prayers to you as well!
I'm sorry you've been diagnosed with this horrible disease it's unbelievable we can put a man on the moon, but we can't cure all cancers. I'll be praying for you. I know you're scared, but you got this.
Oh they can cure it they don't want to there's too much money and all the chemotherapy and everything
@@tigertalks1567 your probably right.
Thank you for the update Melanie. So happy your baby girl is making such good progress with her growth. You’ve got a great support system in place. Hopefully the chemo is killing the cancer and your side effects stay minimal. Continued prayers for you. 🙏🙏🙏
I have 24 weeks of chemo going on for triple negative breast cancer. I have 11 left.
After the first one was done, I felt more in control going foreward.
It does get better.
Over half way through!! Praying for your journey!
Congrats on your baby girl! My thoughts and prayers are with you!
I too am going through Chemo, I have been fortunate to have slight side effects so far, I am single but feel I am blessed to have a family and friends support system, don't know what I would do without them. You are doing great with sharing your experiences it is helpful to hear others going through similar situations. Prayers lifted for you and your family.
Glad yiu have family and friends that support you. I wish you all the best.
Praise be ....baby is thriving and you're are tolerating Chemo well.
A friend that goes to church with me had the exact same cancer.. that was 30 years ago, she also had a baby after .. praying things go well for you❤
Melanie,
I definitely will be praying for you, your husband, baby girl, and all of your family. My prayer for you is for complete healing!!! Know that there are people like me who don't know you but do care very much. Your page popped up, and I'm glad it did. Thank you for sharing your story. Keep up your amazing attitude! Love from South Carolina. 🩷
Ya all the cancer stories are popping up. I’m so thankful to lea of all this cancer happening to us in the world and it’s hard to hear it but we are aware this way. Many cancer journey videos I’m following, please stay positive one persons journey has been not at all like they said it would be at all, they told her she had a year to live and that can’t ever be a sure thing because God decides that not Science or Doctors.
The biotène comes in a very convenient spray, too. That makes it easy to use at any time. I still use it. My cancer journey was different but I certainly understand the neuropathy and other side effects of chemo. I am now 13 years cancer free. I am praying for you, baby girl and your family. 🙏 Heather Conn, The Kneady Homesteader brought you to our attention for prayer.
Biotene also has lozenges and a gel. They're both great!
Thank you for sharing that! I ended up ordering the whole little kit set that has that spray and the gel too. so glad to hear you are now cancer free. It gives me hope!
Thank you for sharing your story. I wanted to let you know that ACT has both dry mouth gum and throat lozenges. They sell them in the dental aisle at Target and Wal-Mart. Ice chips are also helpful to prevent or help with mouth sores. Congratulations on the birth of your daughter! I will continue keeping you both in my prayers.
Hi Melanie, I'm happy to see that you're feeling better emotionally! You're a very strong woman & I admire your strength! You are in my prayers, I pray that our Father in Heaven, will heal you, and comfort you & your family. Lots of love to you & your family! 🙏 🥰🙏🏾🌻🌹🌻
Thank you so much!
@@melaniefostersnavely You are very welcome! 🥰

💪
Congratulations on your new baby. I’m sure you’ll make up for lost cuddle time as soon as you can. Sending good vibes for your own treatment journey; it looks like the chemo is working already 😊. 🤗😘
Congratulations on your baby girl! You do look better already. My husband has battled head and neck cancer twice. 2009 was stage four base of tongue, cancer, and three years ago was left lateral tongue cancer. He lost half his tongue which was reconstructed with his forearm . He has done chemo and radiation. Manuka honey is very helpful with mouth sores. I will continue to keep you in my prayers. You got this! My husband is going to be 70 on the 28th and is doing amazing!
Thank you for sharing this with me. I am sorry to hear about your husbands having to battle cancer but am so glad to hear he is doing well now. That give me hope. I also just got Manuka honey actually, so glad to hear that.

Blessings to you as you go along on this journey...
Congratulations on your little one! Thank you for sharing.
Praying for you, your baby and husband. So glad your baby is strong. My husband helped his brother with holding his daughter skin to skin in NICU when she was born 2 months premature. Her mother had a medical emergency that was the reason for early delivery and she was not able to care for the baby until she was well. That baby is now a very healthy 24 yo teacher.
I pray for your healing and for your doctors to make the right decisions. God bless.
Thank you for sharing. You are absolutely in my prayers.
Prayers, hugs and love to you and your family❤❤❤
