  • The Orthodox Monastery of St. John The Baptist, Tolleshunt Knights, Essex, England.
The Patriarchal Stavropegic Monastery of St John the Baptist is a monastic community for both men and women, directly under the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The Patriarchal Stavropegic Monastery of St John the Baptist is located in Tolleshunt Knights, near Maldon, Essex, in England, and is the oldest Orthodox religious community in the UK.
The religious community was founded in 1958 by Elder Sophrony, under the jurisdiction of Metropolitan Anthony, Metropolitan of Sourozh and ruling Russian bishop in England, with six monastics from a number of nations; soon after, in 1965, the monastery moved under the direct jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
The community is distinctive in that it is a double monastery, consisting of both women and men living the monastic tradition of a Christ-centred prayer life. Currently, there are just under 40 monastics in the community, the majority of whom are nuns, with a smaller number of monks.[1]
After the death of Elder Sophrony in 1993 the Archimandrite was Father Kyrillos. Since his retirement in 2019 the Archimandrite has been Father Peter (born 1977).

I haven't been to the monastery since between 1982 and 1992 when I stayed as an American visitor for about 6 months. That stay shaped a lot of my experience as a new Orthodox. Fr Sophrony was there. The main church was just finished but far fewer trees and other buildings. Lots of memories.

Thank you! Your video is like a little mirracle. I live in Odessa, Ukraine. It has always been my dream to visit this monastery. I had a tiny look with the help of your video, thank you for your work. Don't mind those who want to involve you in arguing. Good luck and welcome to Ukraine.

@@VicStefanu Thanks - no problem at all - but i have visited this beautiful and special Monastery recently, and i know video recordings are not allowed, as well as uploading them on you tube.....so, although i know it's very tempting to upload and share, somehow i feel out of respect for the wishes of the dear Fathers and Sisters there, it would be nice to refrain from uploading and perhaps remove all these videos - unless you have a Special permission from the Fathers - which then it is a different story. I just thought i mention to you what i know. All the best.

Thank you for your comments. I have received many negative emails about this video, mainly from people directly associated with the monastery. However, the popularity of the video indicates how much people want to see it and to visit this beautiful place, so I do not think that the video represents the monastery in a negative way at all..

    • @joannajones8533

Hi again - it is not about representing the Monastery in a negative way or whatever - it is about respecting the wishes of the Fathers and Sisters there - who do not wish to have their "home" videoed, and let alone uploading it on you tube etc....it is as if someone came to your own house and started videoing it against your wish, and then started uploading it on you tube - dis-respecting your wish; it is as simple as that.
You can let people know about it in other ways - but it would be nice and thoughtful and humble if you respected the wishes of the Fathers and Sisters there.

Pretty pictures inside the monastery. I have comment about John the Baptist, specifically. Artists have been drawing John the Baptist with a Gold Halo for millennia; however, I believe it would be more symbolically appropriate to draw John with wings of an angel (which some do) and with a Silver Halo (very rare to see) rather than with a Gold Halo. I will explain. John the Baptist, baptised men with water, but He who came after him, Jesus, baptised men with Holy Spirit. John the Baptist was an ideal messenger of God making him an angel. Angels are depicted as having wings. Secondly, as John was a messenger of God, he was a witness to the Light but NOT the Light. As the Word of God is the Primary Source of Light, it should be represented with a Golden Halo. For those, who reflect the Light, such as angels do, they should be represented with a Silver Halo. Thirdly, John the Baptist knows about the Pearl of Great Price, which our Father gave to him. John the Baptist died for this one.
In this Dark Age, we could use more Moons, like the John the Baptist, who go for the Wilderness and serve people and not corrupted Suns of Satan who are tainted with Mammon and the desire to rule over people.

I hope you do realise that the Elders at the Monastery are not really happy uploading videos or photographs of them on the Internet - they don't allow videoing the Monastery or the services - and certainly not uploading them on the internet...
I certainly appreciate your good-will in sharing the beautiful experiences you had there, but perhaps out of respect to the wish of the people who live there, perhaps we can refrain from uploading these videos - we will be doing them a great favour!!

    • @joannajones8533

Absolutely!! I totally agree with what you say - i don't think the Fathers of this particular Monastery give permission for Videoing - let alone Uploading these videos!!! I think the creator of this video should remove it actually...out of respect to the wishes of the fathers and sisters living there....

I agree. I heard a woman shout, "video! You are not allowed video!". They stopped then started again. Very disrespectful.

I didn't actually see any monks or nuns in this video, mostly just a tour of the buildings. But I agree that this video should have mentioned that it had a blessing to take this video and post it.

Very sad at times like this they have closed their doors . I have trying to find a priest at a monetary for Confession. Makes you wonder why...they need to reopen THE LORD'S DOORS TO HIS HOME. We need the church more now than ever. Jesus said help sinners repent. Oh well they have lets us down in a big way.
