      Returning back home to the faith of St. Cuthbert, St. Alban, St. Patrick, St. Winifred, St. Beuno, St. Xenia, St. Seiriol, St. David, St. Andrew, St. Dymphna, St. Nina, and millions of others absolutely requires a mass conversion because both the Roman and Anglican Churches have departed from the faith handed to us by the Lord Jesus Christ. We were all given the choice, and we must choose well.
      Do not fall into the heresy of ethnophyletism. These other cultures do not exclude us. They have preserved the true faith for us. Thank them and follow them.

      @@petetrif I edited my comment as I found that it was actually Arsenios of Paros who said this, not Arsenios the Cappadocian.
      As far as the context of the quote, what I have found is that he prophesied this in 1877. I haven't found any further info, unfortunately. My apologies.
      What is the film? Maybe I can provide some info in that regard.

      @@joshua_wherley It is a supernatural horror set in a Serbian Orthodox Church. Still very early days, I am just trying to gather background knowledge at the moment. I have very little familiarity with the Serbian Orthodox Church. I was raised a Roman Catholic and only have a handful of memories of going to the Serbian Orthodox Church with my dad and grandad. I guess I was asking, what is meant by the quote? what is its significance - 24 people have liked it, it must resonate in some way.

    • @joshua_wherley
      @joshua_wherley 3 года назад +13

      @@petetrif First, a little history: the Greek-speaking Eastern Church and Latin-speaking Western Church began drift apart in AD 1054, due to mutual excommunications between Patriarch Michael I Cerularius
      of Constantinople and Pope Leo IX of Rome
      . The situation had moments of hope, but by the Council of Ferrara-Florence in AD 1438-1439, it was clear that the two sides would not be reconciled, largely due to a disagreement over the role or power that the Bishop of Rome has in the broader church, among other teachings such as Purgatory.
      Eventually, the Greek church was known as the Eastern Orthodox Church (which today consists of the ancient churches in Alexandria, Antioch, Constantinople, and Jerusalem, as well as the churches of Russia, Serbia, Cyprus, Romania, Georgia, Albania, and several others). Meanwhile, the Latin church became known as the Roman Catholic Church. Many do not realize that the two sides were in communion for a millennium before they split.
      So, the significance of the quote from the Orthodox perspective is this: any church that fell under Rome's jurisdiction, as is the case with the church of Britain, aligned itself with the Papacy's orders over the centuries. So Orthodox say that the church in Britain strayed from the true Christian teachings and way of life that they originally received from great saints like Aristobulus, Columba, Patrick. What Arsenios meant by his quote is that the church of Britain must recover those early figures that brought Christianity to the Isles and reject the Papist reforms. The must instead embrace Orthodox Christianity as the original faith practiced in that land. Only then will Britain truly be orthodox in her approach to the faith and Orthodox as a people.
      Hopefully that is not too long-winded of a response. Please let me know if I can clarify anything.

      Marios Archelleos if by the Church of England you are referring to the State Church of Modern England, I don't believe it is a good idea to call down the blessings of God upon her. If on the other hand you are referring to the original English Church, then I may join in with your prayer. The current State Church of England is finished as a Christian Institution she has gone beyond the point of no return. Not only England but the Whole Western Church is beyond the point of no return. There may very well still be many well-meaning members of the State Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church, but the institution they belong to cannot be Saved, it is now up to Orthodox to convert these people and reacquaint them with their ancient Faith, and Spirituality. Neither Canterbury or Rome will convert back to Historical Christianity, but plenty of parishes and maybe a few diocese in these Communions can be brought back into the Ancient Church, this is our job, to entice them back to the Faith of their ancestors.

      You take it for granted while the closest parishes to me are an hour's drive away one way. I wish Orthodoxy had a more evangelistic spirit here in America, that it would stop focusing almost exclusively on the major cities and give at least a little more attention to setting up mission churches in the more rural areas. The distance, the "pandemic," and the weather have been my greatest hindrances in pursuing Orthodoxy further than mere study and prayer.
      I am praying that God will soon give me the opportunity and ability to take the next steps back to his one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Bride. Please pray for me as well. 🙏☦

    • @Cobruh_Commander
      @Cobruh_Commander 4 года назад +2

      @Gerry Hagen no, that was the Roman Catholic church that broke off for the aforementioned reasons. They were the ones who gave the excommunication first because of the fallacious notions regarding papal supremacy and universal jurisdiction, to name a few. Jay Dyer does a great job in detailing the events leading up to the Schism.

      @Gerry Hagen My pleasure. It's much deeper than the both of us can speak about in a comments section, that's why I recommended Jay Dyer. He's a good source for these matters.

    • @HickoryDickory86
      @HickoryDickory86 3 года назад +1

      @Gerry Hagen The Roman Catholic Church was once Orthodox, not the other way around. There was only one holy, catholic, apostolic Church since Pentecost, and from it various schismatics have broken away throughout time, including the Catholic Church in A.D. 1054. The canonical Orthodox Church maintains the same ancient traditions as they have always been observed.
      In the ancient Church, the Pope of Rome was always acknowledged as the _primus inter pares_ (first among equals) of the patriarchs-after the founding of Constantinople the collectively were known as the Tetrarchy, consisting of the bishops of Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem respectively-but he was never accorded supremacy or plenary universal jurisdiction. He was _primus_ only because Rome was (1) the capital city of the Roman Empire and (2) had been the apostolic seat of both Peter and Paul. When Constantinople was established, its bishop was accorded identical honors as those favored by the bishop of Rome-to whom he was regarded as _secundus_ -precisely because Constantinople was the new capital city of the Roman Empire.
      All of the five patriarchs, however, enjoyed universal _appellate_ jurisdiction. For example: If you were under the Pope of Rome and he would not hear your case was too sluggish in taking it up, you could appeal, say, to the Patriarch of Alexandria, and if he took the case up and made a decision, his ruling was binding. It could not be overturned even by the Pope of Rome.
      As Caer said, the Great Schism came about for many reasons, but two of its heaviest were the Pope's claims to plenary universal jurisdiction and Roman papal supremacy. Papal infallibility was added to the ever growing list with Vatican I.
      The Catholic Church broke away from Orthodoxy and has produced lots of heretical innovations since then, not the other around. I hope that helps.

      Which era of the first millennium are u asking about? The best account of the early church in Britian is Bede's History of the English Church and People, which is available in Penguin. You ought also to read Gildas and Nennius, both of whom are/were available from Phillimore. They will give you a good account up until about the seventh century.

      @@news_internationale2035 In what way is it more organic? I feel that word gets used a lot but doesn't actually mean what the person thinks it should mean.
      And it didn't get "pulled out of nowhere." The WR arose because as Orthodoxy went west it encountered people who held to a similar theology but didn't believe their cultural expressions of the faith should be abandoned. Particularly when those expressions were Orthodox long before the split between East & West.

    • @Ioannikios174
      @Ioannikios174 2 года назад +8

      No, the modern "byzantine rite" is actually closer to what the west was doing before the great schism. Also, the west had multiple rites and not a singular "western rite".
      I used to be more positive toward the "western rite" and even used to embrace it, but there are major flaws with the concept.
      1. As I stated before, the modern western rites are actually more dissimilar to what the west was actually doing before the great schism than the eastern rite is. Take a Catholic church before the 1500s, it's icons looked more like byzantine icons and it will have no pews. Why? Because that's simply more reminiscent of what the west was like when it was Orthodox. To make a modern Catholic-looking Orthodox Church is really a contradiction in terms. You're adding elements that are foreign and contradictory to Orthodox theology and practice. Statuary and pews being glaring examples.
      2. How do we know that the clergy who participate in these rites are actually doing Orthodox practices and sticking to Orthodox theology? Things like wafers and unleavened bread are not to be used as the eucharist. There is no devotion to the sacred heart. And so on and so forth, which brings me to my next point:
      3. ALL converts, whether former schismatic priests or laymen, must undergo and SLOW and LENGTHY catechesis. There are major flaws with taking an Anglican or catholic parish and just "making it Orthodox" in a quick way. You have former papist or protestant clergy becoming Orthodox clergy in a rushed fashion without them even being able to acquire a proper Orthodox mindset and phronema, proper Orthodox repentance, etc. The apostle paul himself forbids new converts from entering into the priesthood.
      4. There is no singular western rite. ROCOR and Antioch are doing and permitting different things. Why create liturgical ghettos into the Church? Why allow people to become separated by a different rite and by different calendars, practices, terms, vestments, etc. Why this needless separation of the Church?
      The ancient Church had multiple rites, yes, but was this because of difference in location? The modern world is a global village and people can easily travel from New York City to Manchester in a matter of days. It isn't wise to create needless separation between peoples that otherwise can be prevented.
      One has to question whether a different rite is or is not the will of God. The Church has been growing more alike over the centuries and NOT more dissimilar.
      Overall, if one is to convert to Orthodoxy, one should convert to Orthodoxy proper and not a makeshift new liturgical movement that isn't what it claims to be (the ancient western liturgy) contradicts Orthodox theology and lacks the fullness of truth.

    The Filioque was introduced to Britain by St Theodore in 680, and if your church dates from 700 then it is possible that it has been continuously said in your church. Many Saxons were undoubtedly murdered by the Normans, but I doubt that they were arguing about the use of azymes. The pillars of orthodoxy in the English-speaking part of Britain are Thomas Becket, John Fisher and Thomas More, but I didn't see any icons of any of them in your video. I would encourage everyone English to say John Fisher's Prayer for Holy Bishops on Ember Saturdays. Do you do that? My godfather was Oswald Shopland from Akeld in the far north of Northumberland. I would imagine that his family has been continuously Catholic since 680. Are you planning to convert us to something else? One of my heroes is Father James Worswick of Newcastle upon Tyne, who was born in Lancashire in 1771, but not validly baptised according to the Oros of 1755. I used to go to Mass in Worswick Street. Do you really think he was not validly baptised?
