If Axial is going to advertise it as 1/18 it better be 1/18. Axial / Horizon been around long enough, they should know better. I'm guessing it has a 12mm wheel hex?
Axial should have let you introduce this first. Before you took it apart to thoroughly introduce it I was skeptical. But now it actually looks like a legitimate option.
Thanks! Taking the RC cars apart and then putting together the video with all the clips takes a ton of time. But I believe it’s crucial to do to help people.
I would recommend the temper gen 2 it's a horizonhobby product still uses same more same Trans and it's kore capable all metal links better shock overall just better and it's cheaper then a scx24 only 160
This might be a good replacement for my ECX Temper gen 2. It's a fun crawler but has breakage problems (axles and driveshafts) and the parts aren't cheap.
Thanks for giving this a fair shake! So much hate on it from day one? Love it, the scale doesn’t bother me, most RC are not to actual scale they market them. With weight, maybe tires, and some shock tinkering - I think you are spot on that this will be amazing. Cheers!
Yepp, i started with the scx24 as my first rc and i think this is an opportunity for me to go bigger without killing my wallet too much. This is gonna be great, i will make my first 4ws build with it.
I think it looks awesome! I don't know why all the hate on it. I think the 1/18 scale will take off now that Traxxas and Axial are releasing rigs in that scale. The problem I think most have with 1/18 scale is there is no aftermarket support for that scale and that's because until now, there hasnt been a big name in that scale. You know Traxxas and Axial will have an aftermarket support. This size is perfect for indoor, outdoor and tinkering. The 24th scale is absolutely a pain in the butt to work on. And right out of the box, this thing is loaded compared to anything 24th scale. I think you're right, Greg, those wheels gotta go 😂. But, other than that, Axial did a good job!
Trouble is the Capra 1/18 is twice the size of the TRX4M 1/18. The Capra uses 1.55" wheels and the Trx4M uses 1" wheels. So the TRX4M has more in common with the SCX24

I think most of the hate for this is because it's twice the size of other 1/18's and is 250 dollhairs. This uses 1.55" wheels and TRX4M's use 1" wheels. So there's not gonna be much in common with each other for aftermarket parts.
It looks way bigger than the average 1/18 scale trucks, and definately bigger than the Traxxas and FMS 1/18 rigs. On the other hand, the bigger size allows a standard servo, which is a big win...
I love mine. Major upgrades: 4ws, HH 380, Rhino ESC, Hardcore links, full droop, front weight, BFG Crawler tires 3.85od. Works pretty well. But still can't keep up with the lcg rigs. But pretty close.
Great video review of this little car! Thank you for taking the time, again, to tear down the chassis/drivetrain and let the viewers see the haps to craps on whats inside! And! @5:30, perfect drivers stance LOL 😂
Thanks for the review Greg! This looks like a good option of my daughter. That’s not a put down of the quality or the capability of the rig. It’s just that she is not quite ready for a 1/10 truck yet. She has a Yeti Jr. which she rips around the yard with, and she likes driving the SCX24s in our rock garden, but this would be a good option to get her on my challenging terrain. And if she gets bored and doesn’t feel like driving home, it would fit in/on my backpack easy. Heck, I’d love to have one myself as a more portable option.
It's an axial so it's very nice looking product, however it seems to me most people either want / can afford 24th scale or the larger 10th scale, I think the majority of us would love the larger 1/5 scale crawlers but people cant see dropping 12 hun on a single crawler, unfortunately the only folks that have them are the RUclips channels they were given to for review, sadly Ive yet to see one in the real world out crawling but I understand why ,so for me I can't see 18th scale taking off ,I think it'll be the tiny crawlers or larger more affordable 10th scale, I'm so Happy to see axial ,traxxas etc pushing the limit tho ,that's great news....
I'm interested in this size class! I've been eyeing the ECX Temper 2 for a while also. I want a rig that can fit in a backpack so I can take it for a walk or hike. Say a 3-6 mile walk and stop at a couple interesting spots to crawl. My impression is a 1/10 scale would be too much to carry and a 1/24 is too small for the outdoors, so maybe this is a Goldilocks size? 🤔
The 24th scales were great after a couple little mods and the 10th scales are a tried and true but 18th might just be that middle ground that everyone has been looking for.
It looks great. I have to be missing something Greg? How can we justify spending 100.00 more for that then the New Traxxas TRX4m which is only 149.00? Plus you have several motor transmission bolt in options from the factory. Again I am sure there is a reason its 100 more. Something tells me there's a difference between axial 1/18 and Traxxas. The specs of the trx4m are not much bigger then a scx24 gladiator where this is much larger.
Hey mate, thinking that with a few upgrades to get the issues sorted will add a few extra $, what do you think is the best entry to crawling from Axial(scale aside). This one or a Basecamp?
This would have made a great updated scx24 (genuine) baby Capra with some updated electronics and OEM scx24 portals ditching the worm gears. Guess I'll go buy an enduro builders kit. Same price as this thing :P
I’m not a huge fan of the servo-on-axle look, but it is accurate to the full-size vehicles of this style which use hydraulic ram steering mounted on the axle. I’ve thought about using linear actuators for steering (would look more scale), but can’t find anything fast enough.
The neon-green beadlock rim was a massive miscalculation - not sure how Horizon's product people missed that. That little detail puts it alongside your Walmart $29.97 RCs.
Okay, I bought last christmas the toy version on the jungle river. Blue and red for my grand daughters and green for me. Yes the design and size is really similar, but technical Axial wins the race (oil filled shocks, lots of lights, good servo, etc). BTW everyone's celebrating the SCX24 Betty design with the green bead locks🤔😲🤣

How does this compare in size and everything to the trx4m
I want them axles from on of these just too see if thy fit to a wpl c24,
Curious to see the size of this to the can am yeti jr. Thank you for your video
That’s one of the few Axial’s I don’t have. Thanks for watching!
@@rcdriver it is actually pretty fun.
Ya I like it, a few mods and it will go even better
I want that Axial only if you tell me hex size, if the hex is 12mm is a must buy
Yes it’s 12mm.
I really fancy that . Cheers Mate 👍
Cool little axial
What size tires? Standard 1.9?
Hi Sir THANKYOU for this very informative video. Really enjoyed and NEEDED to see strip down. I'm DEFINITELY SOLD. Live in England so just pre order the grey fox capra also with all the hop ups I wanted. Just have to wait until end of month in England 🇬🇧🇺🇲🕊️✌🏼👍🏼
Looks pretty capable for what it is👍 excited to see the part swaps between the axial and trx4m
Something tells me there's a difference between axial 1/18 and Traxxas. The specs of the trx4m are not much bigger then a scx24 gladiator where this is much larger.
Yeah there's none I don't think. This uses 1.55" wheels and the TRX4M uses 1" wheels, same as the SCX24. About as 1/18 as the E Revo is 1/10
Hey mate, thinking that with a few upgrades to get the issues sorted will add a few extra $, what do you think is the best entry to crawling from Axial(scale aside). This one or a Basecamp?
Basecamp
Will it work on 3 s
When is the 1/6 capra coming out😂
I wonder if a 1.0 or 1.2 tires and wheels would work?
12mm
I like it 🤷♂️
should have been 1/6 scale
No, not a toy ---a real thriving industry.
This would have made a great updated scx24 (genuine) baby Capra with some updated electronics and OEM scx24 portals ditching the worm gears.
Guess I'll go buy an enduro builders kit. Same price as this thing :P
Are the Tires changeable
They're glued, you will have to buy a new set of wheels and tires (1.55)
Nice but looks bigger than 1/18 scale
🔵🔵🔵👍👍👍😀😀😀🔵🔵🔵
@RCdriver0 Great
Split axle housing? Did I see that correctly?
Yup!
@@rcdriver 🤔 future 6x6 projects
i always hated servos on the axle, i wish there was a way to hide the servo in the body and use linkages, idk
I’m not a huge fan of the servo-on-axle look, but it is accurate to the full-size vehicles of this style which use hydraulic ram steering mounted on the axle. I’ve thought about using linear actuators for steering (would look more scale), but can’t find anything fast enough.
Are the wheel hexes 12mm?
Yes
The neon-green beadlock rim was a massive miscalculation - not sure how Horizon's product people missed that.
That little detail puts it alongside your Walmart $29.97 RCs.
Okay, I bought last christmas the toy version on the jungle river. Blue and red for my grand daughters and green for me. Yes the design and size is really similar, but technical Axial wins the race (oil filled shocks, lots of lights, good servo, etc). BTW everyone's celebrating the SCX24 Betty design with the green bead locks🤔😲🤣
I'm old but I want one...
I don’t think anybody was wrong. It’s way too expensive.
What size tires are ghey bc I’m buying one
A true axial rig. That means the shocks are way to high n the tires suck….. RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX
@RCdriver0 Wow Ive been winning alot of youtube prizes lately. Do you need my credit card?
It's definitely the fugly wheels
4ws would be great if axial will actually sell you the axles unlike the 1/10 capra
Another vid?? Please
There will be another vid for the UTB18. 😏
Nice 😲🤩🥰😍💯👏
I like the green wheel ring. Great review as always.
I agree those painted green bead locks look meh
So this is basically a rehash of the Horizon Temper 2, at least from what I can see.
