I once wrote this pitch for an X-Men reboot where it was directed by Brad Bird and featured Jubilee & Kitty Pryde as co-leads. The main team consisted of characters who never got the attention they deserved in the original X-Men films like Nightcrawler, Gambit, Psylocke, Storm, Warpath, and Havok, they were all mentored by the original five X-Men as a way of passing the torch between the old and new movies, and the main villain was to be Mister Sinister.
A best friend and I did our own, where after the Cold War, America is looking for a new superweapon to beat Russia in the arms race - after super soldiers failed to stop HYDRA from infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D. A rogue scientist and his group of researchers discover the advent of mutants and decide to use them to siphon their powers to create new tech and weapons. Stryker and Cameron Hodge now develop resources to get rid of political and business competitors who don't want this war to happen and they try to have public figures in their way assassinated. The scientist suggests to use a mutant they captured as their fall guy. The OG X-Men are informed by Fury to Xavier about the threat and someone framed them with trying to assassinate those same high officials in the public eye. Now they must clear their name or risk being outed as mutants to find out how this happened.
You had me at Brad Bird. Seriously, why hasn't Marvel considered hiring that guy? He not only gave us the Incredibles, but also can do live action spectacle like in Mission Impossible and Tomorrowland.
I'm surprised that Brad Bird isn't on this list, considering how he managed to be great at both animation and live-action. I think he can be able to create the X-Men, but have them utilizing their powers very interestingly.
"and because this movie is such a high priority, I just can't see Disney not going with proven talent." You would think so, but remember that they gave Spider-Man, they're most popular character, to Jon Watts. Loved the video! I always appreciate how much energy and research you put into these suggestions. Personally, I would love to see Vaughn return to the X-Men, as I think First Class came the closest to portraying the X-Men as a team and not just a background for a main character.

Daley & Goldstein would be a very MCU choice since their style of writing and directing is very much akin to the best MCU movies outside of Infinity War/Endgame, but I think the X-Men needs to be a big change for the MCU. The MCU needs to do something new and I think they could do that by making the X-Men a top-tier action-adventure franchise with Christopher McQuarrie. @@Paradox-es3bl I was thinking something more along the lines of Sense 8 would fit an x-men film or TV show for them. Or we could give them one of those acid trip 90s characters and have them go nuts in a Speed Racer style
My favorite pick yours is The Duffer Brothers. What a great call. I really liked both of James Mangold's Wolverine movies, and would love to see him tackle the whole X-Men team proper.
Since I don't personally care about the X-Men, I'm actually kinda torn. Do I want someone who gets why YOU love the characters, because maybe they can show me why I should? Or do I just want someone who can visualize the powers? Lol. Because honestly, I've enjoyed the 8 Fast & Furious movies I saw (skipped Tokyo Drift and stopped with the Rock/Statham one. Won't see future ones. It's getting too ridiculous.) and The Transporter and stuff... and I also actually really like, "I'm the Juggernaut, b**ch!" So like... I don't need much from the X-Men movies. Also, the first like ~20 minutes of X-Men Origins: Wolverine is still the best X-Men movie. Like, up until the "present day." And half of that is just cool visuals lol. But aside from that? I'm honestly also torn if I prefer Logan, which had some heart... or idk, probably X3 because I was too young not to like it and I actually thought Magneto abandoning Mystique also had enough heart... and it had cool visuals. So honestly... I'm fine with your #1 or the guy from Legion, or I think basically any pick you gave lol.
I'll be honest if you asked me what 2 X-men Marvel should build the movies around, I'd say Kurt Wagner and Kitty Pryde First movie: Cyclops and Storm have their first mission with Kurt and Kitty. keep Kurt older/experienced, make Cyclops and Storm the main characters, but make Kurt and Kitty the heart (establish the family) Movie 2: Uncle Wolverine is back in town, and the kids sneak along. Keep Scott and Storm involved as going after the kids/eventual backup but spice up the team A plot Wolverine story with back door set up for spin-off movies/shows/specials B plot Cyclops and Storm try to wrestle back their main character status (basically stablish Wolverine as a sixth ranger) Movie Wolverine claws: Apocalypse. Cyclops and/or Storm become head of the School and/or public Figures of similar caliber, meanwhile Kurt and Kitty are promoted to leaders of their own team. And Wolverine is there (we set the franchise for a split direction Cyclops and Storm stay in the U.S. with vs. the Government, vs. the hellfire club, vs. Reverend William Stryker movies, your comicbook grounded style X-Stories while Nightcrawler and Shadowcat go globle trotting or to space or dimension hopping, your wacky fun time X-storyies)+(use Wolverine as a posterboy for your Loner/Darker/Horror X-storyies) Btws: my pre watching this video pitch didn't include the split focus the new "main characters" would have been Kitty And Kurt
With your take on Nia DaCosta I’m very much hoping she will take the job because Cyclops is literally my favorite X-men character (Storm is 2/3 wth Iceman) and I have always been hurt by the way he’s been so neglected in the movies. In the new movies I NEED to see Cyclops shine!😂
Your top pick, one one hand, only directed two movies averaging an unwatchable rating of 6.0... But on the other hand, they're woke and check boxes for the ESG score. I hope Disney loses enough money to finally wise up.
I really like the pitches for Daley/Goldstein and DaCosta. Lots of great potential for both. I also agree with your assessment of Vaughan. First Class was my favorite of the main Fox X-Men movies, but he probably wouldn't want to come back to Marvel right now. Plus, I would rather get someone new for X-Men, and I think he would be a great pick for the Authority movie.
The blame has to lie with Peyton Reed when it comes to Quantumania. He's a perfectly serviceable comedy director. However, as his episodes of Mandalorian have proven, he just doesn't have the chops for much beyond that. Every interview makes it seem like he was the one who pushed to make Ant Man a bigger movie and he wasn't up to the task. I have a lot more faith in Nia Decosta.
DeCosta makes a lot of sense based on the strengths and arguments you made. Hopefully she gets it. If Matthew Vaughn directs The Authority movie, that sounds great. In fact, I would love to see all the directors you mentioned like Jordan Peele, Matthew Vaughn, Edgar Wright, and Daley/Goldstein work on a DCU project. For example, I would love to see Daley/Goldstein take on a Teen Titans film and The Duffer Bros helm a Justice League Dark if they leave Netflix.
Maybe it's just cause i loved the movie and it's recent, but I think Steven Caple Jr. of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts could do it. That movie is all about uniting as one to fight forces that threaten us all, and has a very fun outsider coming into a bigger team dynamic that change both the outsider and the team with Noah and the Autobots. Steven seems to want to do large ensembles as evidenced by the movie's ending so I think he's a valid option too
The second guy also has all these diverse movies and can really speak to the experience of being a marginalized person. All his previous projects show how capable he is of connecting with the underdog, the actual underdog, and the entitled dog.
Definitely NOT Bryan Singer, I can tell you that much. But in all seriousness, since the original series had LGBT undertones, I’d love to see this one go back to the roots and be themed around modern-day racism. And with that, I’d love to see a black indie director do it - a Barry Jenkins type, if you will.
If Jordan Peele ever directs a marvel film it will be a Dr Strange because Dr Strange is where the interesting horror directors go to make something that isn't really an interesting horror film but will be marketed as such for a while
Just have James Gunn direct every single MCU project; Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was the only enjoyable Phase 4 film other than No Way Home. He's the only MCU director who still seems to care and inject proper heart in the films.
I think you should consider highlighting one more director: Dan Trachtenberg. He's fresh enough that he'd hopefully be willing to work with the big machine that Marvel is but also has proven himself enough in smaller-scale projects like 10 Cloverfield Lane and Prey. He would do a spectacular job! Just watched this video hoping his name would be next, and I think you may have overlooked a perfect candidate here
I actually feel bad for her because i don’t think it was fully her fault. People already don’t like Brie Larson and her acting in these films, it sounds like Marvel meddled with it by doing loads of reshoots and the marketing wasn’t great. The film itself didn’t even get awful reviews. I hope she gets a second chance
I wholly respect Nando’s opinion because he’s clearly a fan and is super knowledgeable about the comics. However, I have never understood the hatred people have for X-Men: Apocalypse. That was personally one of my favorite theater experiences I’ve ever had and I thought it was super fun and utilized my experience as a fan of the X-Men series. Granted, there are flaws I understand (there’s a lot going on, the young characters don’t get as much time as they deserve, Apocalypse isn’t huge, etc) but those don’t detract from it for me personally.
I'm not gonna pretend it was the worst superhero movie ever. It certainly wasn't. However, I feel like it just did not mesh with how I see the X-Men and especially Apocalypse. In my mind, Apocalypse should be a Thanos level character, both in physical size and in narrative weight. I think he was miscast and poorly interpreted. That said, if a person either was unfamiliar with comics Apocalypse or was less precious about it, like my dad is, I could totally see someone find enjoyment where I struggle. I certainly didn't hate this movie, and I'm glad people were able to enjoy it more than I was

Those were who I would want to direct this project as well as James Gunn.
I'll be honest if you asked me what 2 X-men Marvel should build the movies around, I'd say Kurt Wagner and Kitty Pryde
First movie: Cyclops and Storm have their first mission with Kurt and Kitty. keep Kurt older/experienced, make Cyclops and Storm the main characters, but make Kurt and Kitty the heart (establish the family)
Movie 2: Uncle Wolverine is back in town, and the kids sneak along. Keep Scott and Storm involved as going after the kids/eventual backup but spice up the team
A plot Wolverine story with back door set up for spin-off movies/shows/specials B plot Cyclops and Storm try to wrestle back their main character status (basically stablish Wolverine as a sixth ranger)
Movie Wolverine claws: Apocalypse. Reverend William Stryker movies, your comicbook grounded style X-Stories while Nightcrawler and Shadowcat go globle trotting or to space or dimension hopping, your wacky fun time X-storyies)+(use Wolverine as a posterboy for your Loner/Darker/Horror X-storyies)
Btws: my pre watching this video pitch didn't include the split focus the new "main characters" would have been Kitty And Kurt
On the topic of Vaughn's collaborators, I feel it's fair to mention that Jane Goldman has helped him co-write many of those mentioned movies.
and she didn't do his last movie the king's man, which probably explains why that movie is so messy
I would love to heart your pitch for an MCU (or not) X-Men film!
Quantumania is a great movie, and that's the hill I'll die on.
Hearing about the director is warming me up to the Marvels.
Any of the Harry Potter directors could be cool
6:14 You had me at Legion. Whatever it takes, get Noah Hawley for Xmen. 'Nuff said.
I just want Cyclops to be executed well.
Give Summers his justice!😅
MARVELS will be review bombed into oblivion even if it's great because "WOMEN!" Incels will do their best to make sure that movie dies in the crib.
Steven seems to want to do large ensembles as evidenced by the movie's ending so I think he's a valid option too
Love how you referenced polaris' caffeine addiction.
The second guy also has all these diverse movies and can really speak to the experience of being a marginalized person. All his previous projects show how capable he is of connecting with the underdog, the actual underdog, and the entitled dog.
Judging by the recent quality of Marvel trash, I think my dog could do a better job than basically anyone on your list.
Your quantummania hate is so strange to me. It's way better than MoM, Wakanda Forever or Love and Thunder.
25:23 Every part of this sentence is absolutely true, including the part about Kitty Pryde
However they pick I hope they get that the xmen are not a regular superhero team, they are also a persecuted minority who have become a family
Edgar Wright directed and written by the Duffer Bros… it could be truly magical
They would want to do both write and direct.
what would you do for the new mutants, if you were to recast them from their film?
They need to reboot first, and hand it over to Universal
Lord & Miller
fantastic four
If Jordan Peele ever directs a marvel film it will be a Dr Strange because Dr Strange is where the interesting horror directors go to make something that isn't really an interesting horror film but will be marketed as such for a while
Let’s be honest marvel will probaly just get some new indie director
I yearn for Spielberg X-Men but he'd never do it in a million years
Just have James Gunn direct every single MCU project; Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was the only enjoyable Phase 4 film other than No Way Home. He's the only MCU director who still seems to care and inject proper heart in the films.
A lot has to do with the writing more than directing.
You think the super speed in the eternals is better than the one in days of futures past?
You should do a pitch on how you want the first x-men movie to go
I think you should consider highlighting one more director: Dan Trachtenberg. He's fresh enough that he'd hopefully be willing to work with the big machine that Marvel is but also has proven himself enough in smaller-scale projects like 10 Cloverfield Lane and Prey. He would do a spectacular job! Just watched this video hoping his name would be next, and I think you may have overlooked a perfect candidate here
Yeah I don't think Nia Dacista is happening
Here 8 montjs later after The Marvels being the biggest bomb in mcu history 😬 she ain't getting X-Men that for sure.
I certainly didn't hate this movie, and I'm glad people were able to enjoy it more than I was
X-men apocalypse was a mixed bag but I've grown to like that movie over time
Phil Lord and Chris Miller!!
Love the Edgar Wright love
lol nia decosta? hahahahahaha
If Edgar Wright got a DC movie, what movie would he best for?
Hear me out: Antoine Fuqua
Phoebe Waller Bridge.
Christopher Nolan
Ugh. I love your videos - and they simultaneously make me so excited for the X-Men movie potential - and sad at what feels like wasted past efforts.
