Hi guys, here I showed up on this video how to fix failure configuring windows updates stuck issue. There are several reasons behind the installation or finalization of windows updates can hang. Most often, these types of problems are due to a software conflict or much more rarely are they caused by a mistake on Microsoft's part regarding the update itself and any of Microsoft's OS could experience freezing, stops, hangs issues during windows updates including windows 10, windows 8.1, windows 7 and more.
The windows updates are probably stuck or frozen if you see one of the following messages persist for a long time.
Such as, #1. Preparing to configure windows, do not turn off your computer.
#2. Configuring windows updates, do not turn off your computer.
#3. Please do not power off or unplug your machine, installing update.
#4. Working on updates, don't turn off your computer.
#5. Keep your pc on until this is done, installing update.
And #6. Getting windows ready, don't turn off your computer.
Whatever, by following this instruction in this video, you can easily get the solution of this problem.

In Windows 7 Home Edition. After turning pc off and starting in Safe Mode, it goes right back to "Configuring Windows updates 35% complete". I've done this several times. Originally, I was attempting to download Windows 10. While downloading it froze up too.

Thanks. You saved an old computer. I left it in Safe mode for ~1 hour. It finally muscled it's way through and finished the updates. When I restarted it, it took a minute or 2 to load correctly. But it's up and running again.

I used automatic subtitles because of his accent (I'm not a native and still aren't used to the Indian accent). The automatic subtitles worked pretty well mostly.
The accent is NOT strong LOL I’m full on American with South American in my blood no Indian in me and I heard great. Check your ears
THE ´REAL´ FIX:
(how it worked for me - posting here to help ppl who came here for a fix to this shitty problem)
1. turn off computer by holding the ON/OFF button for 20 seconds
2. turn on the computer
3. the system should give you the option to start in ´safe mode´ - do that
4. wait all night for the damn update to finish (it WILL work eventually, do not be impatient or panic (like myself))
------------ IF (if) this does not work, repeat step 1., at point 2. hit key F8 repeatedly and try starting system in other methods -----------
5. most importantly; once on the windows desktop again, open (local disk) C: > Windows > and delete the folder Software Distribution (it will free up a ton of space, like u initially wanted, and also be automatically restored upon next startup.
**if that does not work: go to Downloads (of the Software Distribution folder) and delete all folders -> u can also do this for other computers to free up the space. (dont forget to empty the recycle bin, run CCleaner or do it manually, restart, done!)

Mine doesn't finish booting to safe mode. It goes back to the blue screen and tries to complete updates again and stays stuck at 35%.

@@heyjoe1018 I did eventually get past this, though. Sorry I didn't record and report the specifics. I think it was just a matter of trying again or maybe just waiting, and it eventually got past 35%.

You are a lifesaver. Got stuck on 35% after rebooting in safe mode, but I waited and it finally booted.
so, I just wait now? I did everything, and now I restarted it, but the same thing again, working on updates, 35% complete, and goes....Do I just wait what, 5 hours? 10 hours?
It worked thanks! If anyone is unsure on uninstalling all previous window updates, just don’t do it and see if it works. Thats what I did and it worked!
when i turn on my pc in safe mode it still shows the configuring windows updates page??? please help

Mohamad Alhoseiny Once I hooked my laptop diirectly to the modem, it worked within 30 minutes. I got the idea off Windows website.
Hey, GD ChrmatiQ (and others with the same results); check out my second post that I wrote to the topic starter (7-27-18 @ about 7:30PM). You'll see that I also got the same stuck-loop problem in Safe Mode as you did but as I was writing my comment about it, I left the computer running. I guess it was about 10 minutes later, that I realized the computer managed to get through.
My point is that perhaps you should let it run in that stuck-loop after rebooting to Safe Mode. My computers are custom built, high-performance systems. They're overclocked CPUs and run very fast. That may have a bearing on how long it'll take for a computer with less power. On the other hand, it may not have anything to do with it, I don't know. Just give it a try and let it run for as long as 30 minutes. See what happens.

GD ChromatiQ just be patient sometimes it take long because of the year of the computer software let it do it job 💯 after I did a recent disc clean my pc went through the same issue

I also had the stuck at 35% window in safe mode, but at about thirty minutes it went away and I was able to follow your protocols, after which time I was able to successfully restart and use my computers. for what it's worth, I think your voice, accent and english are fantastic, although my musical tastes are different, I appreciate the sounds over silence while I waited for my computer to slog through the steps. thank you again!!

It really helped me. Even though it started configuring in safe mode i just kept patience and then it showed clean up window and after that it finally showed the desktop home window. Followed your steps and it turned out to be saviour for me.

F8 started my laptop, I hit return and windows automatically removed the last update!! Thanks for the F8 tip so grateful
So many ignorant ungrateful comments on here. After watching and listening carefully (with one's eyes and ears) I followed everything you said. My pc started to configure the updates again after a restart and took a long time and u thought it was not working. Then it started a cleanup mode which took another while and again I thought it's not going to work. But after weeks of avoiding using the pc to do anything on as it's been a right pain to even startup it now works again. Thank you very much 👏
At first I waited 2 hours at 35%. So I shut down my laptop and start it in safe mode. Took me to the configuring page at 35% again. This time, I waited for an 1 hr. again nothing happened. So I shut down it start again in safe and waited for another 2 hrs. Still nothing. So I grabbed my laptop and threw it out the window.

Looks like having done a disc clean up previously has something to do with this being stuck. I had no idea it even needed an update. Currently in Safe Mode and its trying to configure update at 35%. I've hooked it up to router with ethernet cable. Hope this works 🙏🏼
Update: it worked! But I'm backing everything up and investing in a new piece of hardware. This has served me well for 8 years.

Perfect, this works. Although I could not uninstall about 5 updates due to not being installed correctly , the disk clean up probably had deleted the main update that caused to hung up my Win7.
Those of you got stuck in safe mode, give it some time, mine is VM 2core 8bg, took 55 min to get into login page (safe mode + Network) option. Thanks for the Video. It worked

So I have a question. I booted in safe mode, however it then wouldn't let sign back in. So I did without using safe mode. Can you tell me why to use safe mode opposed to just using it with signed in? Second, when we change to manual will we still get Window updates? Third, there are a lot of updates to delete, on my system, this has gone on for some years now. Is there another location in which to delete those unsuccessful window updates.You did a wonderful job with explaining, regardless of the comments of the accent, its rather thick, however it you just listen and follow the steps being shown, it was easy.Thanks a lot

For me, I had to use F8 to get to restore because the safe mode did not work

another option is F5 on boot -->select Command Prompt-->cd C:\windows\softwaredistribution\Download\install
delete the contents of that folder..those are the pending updates..

If you run it again you will get Windows Update clean up. I did it twice and the 2nd time it came up

However, I've tried to boot in "Safe Mode w/Networking" before I watched this video, and the computer simply opened to that "Configuring Win Update 35%" crap anyway. Though I realize you selected "Safe Mode", not "Safe Mode with Networking" and that may make a difference.
I'm going to try it that way, ("Safe Mode" only) and see if it works but I must confess that I'm extremely skeptical. It just doesn't seem to me that the Safe Mode with Networking would make any difference, but I'll try it and I will return with the results.

I don't understand. All you did was remove the message, how does that solve the issue? Because next time the computer wants to update, it will just repeat the same problem.
I set the update on manuall but it still was configuring than i did the overall procedure again and disabled it this time, did i do it right??

What happened at 4:56 click on what? That screen did not pop up for me after I double clicked on windows update.
Thank you for the solution, in my case after switching to Safe Mode, windows reverted (some of) the failed changes. Then the laptop automatically restrated in normal mode and continued reverting changes

Before hard reboot, make sure that the "cylinder" light is not blinking or on. Please give it over an hour if the computer is low end
Unbelievably, I just powered my pc down and let it restart and the circle dots never froze and I completed the update within 10 minutes. If it freezes I recommend these steps in the video as I've found them to help others online.

I did the Safe Mode thing. Waited 25 minutes of that list of drivers, the screen eventually went blank & then rebooted. So I'm still stuck on updates 35% in Safe Mode now !! Help !!!!
I want to give some hope to people frustrated by a really bad Windows 7 issue with my comment: I initially had about *18 hours of frustration*. And probably caused some of that by turning off and trying various method to get back into my laptop (as I'd never had quite that long a delay before!). In my case, I resolved to just wait it out in safe mode *and about another 11 hours later* the login screen area came up! The point is, if you are in safe mode *and it is saying it is reverting then IT IS...just. be. patient!* Something like this taking a crazy time is HIGHLY likely your hard drive being severely clogged up! Once i got in I ended up deleting (through disc cleanup) about 190GB of reverting repeat info off my 450GB C: drive. No more bothering with updates anymore for me as Win 7 isn't supported by Microsoft anyway. Good luck, lads! : )

I did the manual update step and after disk clean step i don't see window update so i select the recommended and delete it. In final step I can't uninstall window update but after reset window. It fixed like Maricel... Thanks You

Used the same genuine XP CD after formatting hard drive. Installed SP 2 and 3 manually. Telephone activated Windows but still stuck with IE 6...seems SP3 is not taking any effect....NEVER had this problem...also turned BITS On under services.msc...never ever did this before....so WHAT can be wrong...as before till last month 300 plus updates used to come in automatically? HELP!!!

My asus laptop windows 10 keeps on restarting while working on updates. It doesn't complete the update because it restarts automatically when it reach the screen that says 'working on updates 30%'. It shut downs then turns back on. That's what's happening for days now. Please help. I cannot lose my files. Thank you.
Try to go to the safe mode, and then uninstall the Windows update, you can use a Windows installation media if necessary!
