    The included pointy screws (used for tightening the hinge hardware) are too short. These screws are supposed to go first through the metallic hinge, then through the hard paper insert and then finally lock on the internal side of the kallax very tightly (which by the way doesn't have a fixed hole on its internal side for this). It's a matter of luck if someone gets to do it right the first time, without the screw gets poped out. In other words, you're "screwed" if you don;t manage to screw it exactly right and as a result the door simply won't stay fixed. That's an Ikea problem and they should provide longer screws for this particular step, as well as have fixed small holes. I'm surprised how they haven't predicted this any better, in their overall design.

      I just was putting my first door insert together and noticed that the screws are too short for the side opposite the hinge. I’ll need to purchase longer screws to get it screwed into the inside of the Kallax wal.

    So the crews which you are using to mount the insert inside the Kallax are piercing the Kallax itself, right? If so, that's a poor design.

      Will probably have a bad "feel" if they are not secured, the door would move all around the place.
      Maybe a screw-less solution would be if they make that insert very strong and go from left to right all around the inside of the shelve and so that you force it in.

    • @322514
      @322514 5 лет назад +2

      You need to use force to screw the screw right through into the Kallax itself using a manual screwdriver. Don't loosen and retighten the screws too often trying to adjust the height of the door, as the screws will quickly lose their bite.

    Cool video. Was thinking about picking these up for my Existing kallax units and wanted to see a little more about them before driving 45 mins to ikea. Great vid. FYI, idk if you do it on purpose, but both your 2x2 units are oriented with the side facing up. The longer sides should be the top and bottom. Maybe you did it bc you don’t want the screws on the top surface? Idk. But they have more structural integrity if you put them how they are supposed to go. I use mine for some smallish rimless aquascapes (16 gallon and 10 on two separate 2x2 units) that weigh a few hundred pounds so for my case it matters. Ofc I reinforced the Kalax but out of the box they are pretty sturdy minus the lacking lateral stability. I also got them in the gloss white which is $10 more expensive as that finish is waterproof unless damaged. (I do think it looks best in that finish anyhow) I will silicone all seams where the edges meet soon. Just as an extra precaution. Sucks the gloss doors are $8 more each. Oh well. Thanks!

      My Kallax shelf was a hand-me-down from my parents so they had already drilled holes into the shelf. (The holes that were previously drilled look to be around 0.4 mm in diameter so I recommend drilling a smaller size to provide some leeway.) I believe one can use a small drill bit to create an opening if there aren't any. If those tools aren't readily available, I believe it's possible to make holes by hand with a screwdriver and screw. I tried it and the screw does go through the wood; however, the process might be a slow one. Wishing you the best!

      Zoltán Baranyai I don't think I'll have a video for the desk as it was set up a few years ago. When I took a look under the table, there is one fastener for each metal piece (2) that keeps the Kallax shelf and desk together. All components would be included in the packaging. I believe you might need a wrench, but the assembly process would be a short one. Hope this helps! 🙂

    I tried screwing the insert into the cubby but I just don't have the strength to get it all the way in. I don't know how you managed to do it. You're a strong girl.
    I was able to do the door side. But the other side won't go all the way in. One of the screws I didn't screw in straight, and it's slanted. There's no way to straighten it up now. The nail will always follow the hole already created.
    I wasn't able to hold the insert straight, so one side is more recessed than the other, so when the door is installed, you can see it's slanted and unsightly. I really messed up this one. :(
    I wonder if I should remove the whole contraption and move it to another cubby. Is there any other type of insert I can put in (aside from a box) that covers up the holes I created? Could the two drawer insert hide the holes?

      lostn65 Hi lostn65, I don't think you should doubt yourself; you're strong too. :) Your idea to switch cubby holes sounds great! If you prefer having the insert with door in the current cubby hole, it might be possible to try using a small drill bit to modify the screw's passageway or create a new one on the insert and inside the cubby. In the event that you wish to swap out the insert with door for the two drawer insert, it should cover up the holes if they are lining the cubby's interior.
      After looking through the Ikea website, I noticed that another potential solution includes utilizing boxes (Drona box, Kvarnvik Storage Box, Bullig Box, Lekman Box, Knipsa basket) as substitutes. Should you switch to this approach, please check the product description's measurements to determine if the item has appropriate dimensions or the size you are looking for. Good luck! :D

      I figured it out. It ended up clicking/popping in when I quit being lazy and drilled holes into the Kallax and the insert wall screwed in flush with the unit :)

    Good tutorial. Many thanks for taking the time to do it. Quick question - what is the distance between the insert and the front of the unit? I don't have the plastic hook as I'm recycling some of my old units. I'm guessing 1" or 25.4mm but I'd just like to confirm that. Many thanks again!

      Hi Dave, I measured the distance from the edge of the shelf to the marking created with the use of the plastic hook and it came out to be around 0.875 inches or 22.225 mm. Best of luck!

    The only downside to this vid is that the natural wood look for the Kallax series is no longer available. Went to IKEA today.

    Maybe I am stupid, but I really don’t understand where the pointy end of the screw goes into. You seem to screw then trough the cardboard and into the wood?! But there are no holes in the wood, are you now damaging your kallax? I’m really struggling here 🙈

    • @EJay8906

      I’m sure you’ve finished by now, but just in case, you have to make your own drill holes. This was given to her from someone else, so they had already made the holes. If you read the reviews on the IKEA site, people complain about the new design because it is permanent. The older design didn’t require you to screw it in.

    I am gonna install four of these kits in my Kallax, but the "plastic hook" is missing, so I could really do with the info on: how far from the edge is the pencil mark gonna be? Quite frankly, I hope IKEA will stop making plastic objects for this kind of "jobs", and instead provide the measurements in the manual. I bet most people that buy IKEA stuff both have a ruler, and knows how to use it. Considering the fact that IKEA is such a huge company, with shops in more than 50 countries, it is quite obvious that they will save the environment for many, many tonnes of unnecessary and very harmful plastic waste just by stopping to produce things like these "plastic hooks".

    This is a very helpful video, but I must have missed something: Why do we need to draw lines with a pencil? I don't see how that would be used afterward. (Maybe it will be clearer when I buy the cabinets and doors, eh) Thanks!

    • @boketto3773
      @boketto3773  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Peter! I found it was easier to use the line drawn by the pencil as a reference (for where the insert should stop at) when screwing in the screws since the insert and plastic hook tended to move around while I was trying to attach the insert to the shelf. It's totally a step that you can bypass though. :D

    Great video. Made it easier to put doors into hinges. The pointy screws are self drilling as you turn, they will provide a nice tight fit. Don't need to use a drill as it will make the holes that are weak and loose.

    That was back to front! The boxes should have been on the bottom so you could pull them out and rest of the floor to get into the contents and the cupboards should be on the top so you only have to bend over to get into the back, lower down you have to squat or get on the floor to access stuff at the back.
