    If not, enjoy!
It was in 1999 when Activision and never soft released Tony hawk's pro skater, thereby redefining the entire genre of skateboarding games. With its smooth gameplay, impressive physics, intuitive controls, a variety in gameplay challenges that kept things fresh, and of course the most famous skateboarder of all time attached to the project. While it's primitive by today's standards, Tony hawk's pro skater and its sequels became the tent pole of the entire skateboarding genre a decade. So naturally, it's success spawned a bunch of imitators from similar brands hoping to get their piece of the pie. So today I'm taking a look at that. This is The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Tony Hawk Knockoff Collection.

I remember playing a demo for Go Go Hypergrind on a store kiosk and quite enjoying the game (and being a teenager going through puberty, take a good guess on which level specific gimmick stood out the most). Never got around to buying a copy as I had a pretty limited allowance and only spent it on games I already had more hype built up towards. This was late 2003, so I’m pretty sure what I grabbed was Freedom Fighters because I saw the game get a lot of glowing praise at the time and just had to have it (no regrets either, that game is awesome). Still, this and Cubivore always stand out in my mind as two weirdly connected GameCube games I wish I had grabbed before they became absurdly expensive (the weird connection being Altus published both).
I found the comment about the lack of flip tricks due to the GameCube controller a bit odd though, I played THPS3 and 4 on GameCube and they had flip tricks.

    • @TBP
      @TBP  3 месяца назад +2

The GameCube had Tony Hawks Pro Skater games, but none of them had to accommodate the gimmick system which requires an extra button input that the console didn't have. So they had to compensate by removing something that was already there.

The one notable thing about ESPN X-Games Skateboarding that I'm surprised you didn't mention is that it's the reason why Bob Burnquist wasn't in THPS3 because he was part of the playable roster and they didn't want him appearing in a competitor's game. It's notable since otherwise Bob appears in every Tony Hawk's game except THPS5 (which we don't talk about anyway) and is the skater with the most appearances in the series outside of Tony himself.

I was expecting the biggest red flag on the cover of Skateboard Madness to be the price being printed right onto the box art in a size bigger than the title lettering, not the small developer emblem in the corner. But yeah, when you find out what Phoenix has made, it is indeed the biggest red flag.

This was a good look into many of these games. And to be honest, i get why you specifically only tackled ones that ACTUALLY were skateboarding, because if you went for the other extreme sports games that were knocking off Tony Hawk but were like, BMX or something, this video would be 3+ hours long.
Simpsons Skateboarding - I appreciate how fair you are with the criticism of this game and that you didn't outright give this a 0 or 1. Personally, the game is a 4/10 for me, as it definitely has some charm and quality to it, even if it has problems. It's not a great game, but in no way is this a bad game or even the "worst skateboarding game ever" like many internet reviewers like to give it.
MTV Sports Skateboarding - And here is where we differ extremely. I dont think this game plays well at all. It's immensely clunky with tricks that really don't work well and levels that both feel and act broken, even being too big for their own good in places. Plus, game is legitimately unfinished. There's content you can only unlock with a cheat because they never actually set an unlock goal for it, there's unlocks that can bug out, there's goals that can bug out and they even left beta files into the game where you can see the crude humor they slapped about like having a character called "Boner Petite" in the script files of a beta. Dark Black didn't do a good job and it shows in their resume, because the next game would be Rocket Power Team Rocket Rescue on PS1, which was also a fairly bad game, before going defunct. To me, MTV Sports Skateboarding is one of the worst MTV Sports games and is a 1-2 out of 10.
Backyard Skateboarding - I agree pretty much exactly with you on this. I also think this is a 7/10 game and deserves a re-release.
Skateboard Madness - I longplayed this years ago. It was over an hour long because of ONE mode forcing you to sit on your ass for 10 minutes every single time. The game sucked hard. It's not the worst of Phoenix Games' work, but it's 100% a 0/10 still. And you know what the saddest bit is? This is STILL not the worst Skateboarding game ever made! But it is on console! Look at Extreme Boards and Blades or Precision Skateboarding on PC if you wanna see how low the bar can get.
Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure - 2-3/10. I know that sounds like a joke, but no, i've basically become the "one guy" who things DESA is not only not a good skateboarding game, but an insult at THPS. At least with the rest of these, they were trying to re-create what Tony Hawk did, even if failed. DESA HAD the engine and controls... and they fucking butchered it "for the kids", except all they did was make the controls worse, remove the versatility of the trick system, made the goals either a joke or a pain in the ass due to level design and awkward physics issues and just made a BAD impression for someone coming into this game as a teaching tool to get prepared for THPS4, which was ONE OF THE MAIN SELLING POINTS. The only thing you'll mainly get from this is playing Disney characters and being in Disney worlds. But even then, when the most people talk about with DESA is Andy's Room, the first Toy Story level, and they don't even bring up the rest of the levels, including Olliewood, a hub world for your created skater, says so fucking much. And god, Olliewood... never experienced another skateboarding game be THAT in your face with product placement for shit like McDonalds and Nokia ringtones. 2-3/10. End of story. Fight me.
Go Go Hypergrind - 6-7/10 for me. The worst part is no one has 100%'d this still (im still trying to figure it out myself) and getting a physical copy of this game is horrendous. Also, dont play Hard unless you're very good at the tricking in this game, because the gag thing will not help you in the scores and combos side of things. This game expects MILLIONS of points in so few time in Hard, its insane.
Disney Sports Skateboarding - Oh hey, another game nobody knows how to 100% because of mysterious requirements. Unfortunately have not yet played this, but from what i've seen... yea, 3/10 seems about fair.
Extremely Goofy Skateboarding - How is this a 4/10? This is so floaty, awkward and boring of a game with no way to fail it really. It's a solid 1-2 out of 10 with me, its just pathetic to experience.
ESPN X-Games Skateboarding - 4-5/10 game for me. I think this was a fine game, but not memorable, not exactly fun in spots and is just overall middle ground blah. Meanwhile...
Evolution Skateboarding - 7-8/10. One of the best in the genre that isn't solely someone like Neversoft. Konami had a homerun with this and it sucks they never pushed forward with it since, Evolution Skateboarding is a good one that deserves mention for alternatives. You'll even find some love to Konami's other IPs in this, like Castlevania and obviously, MGS.
Yanya Caballista - If we go casual, i think this game is a 6/10. It has some jank to it and its control scheme aint great, but its tutorial does well with letting you know how the game works and feels and the game overall can be fun and challenging. But if we go 100%, where you have to also beat the main game mode on Hard... yeeeeaaaa, this game is bonkers bullshit to deal with and our scores would be the same at that point of 3/10.
SkateBird - It's cute. It's silly. It has that Goat Simulator-esque physics thing to it, which can be immensely jank for a game like this. It's levels do kinda suck and sometimes so do the goals. But i like it. I don't think its the best of the list though and even though it's indie and more recent, that doesn't mean it's suddenly better because of that. 6/10.
Btw, if we did include Thrasher, even though it is a bit unfair due to when that came out, it's a 7-8/10 game as well to me. I still think that game is the grandfather of the SKATE series, just from Thrasher's existence and the simulator-esque controls and gameplay alone.

This is such a good essay. IMO though one game that I think needs to be added to this, though not exactly a skateboarding game but very much in the same vein is Aggressive Inline by AKA Acclaim. It actually had changeable levels (like a mission where you knock over a light and cause some half-pipes to be "magically" added) long before Tony Hawk did and in fact did the open world roaming thing before the THPS series did. It also has an equally bitchin' soundtrack as well.
I believe its one of the hidden gems of that "EXTREME" era of the early 2000s. I'll admit, the physics can be a bit jank and there's A LOT of that Acclaim "We gotta be edgy"-ness to it. but I think its worth a visit. Even if just to check it out.

It's still in Early Access but there's a game on Steam that's a roguelike skateboarding game that looks inspired by Tony Hawk. It's called Helskate and I haven't tried it yet.

on the disney skateboarding game with just Max and Goofey, that frame rate looks about right, even if we only had the demo. Granted, we didn't have a very powerful PC(it only ran 98SE at best, and was built when 95 was still a thing) but don't remember the frame rate being all that much higher, if at all.

I don't really want to engage with wrestling beyond references. I don't want to deal with the toxicity that comes with having unpopular wrestling opinions. Like that recent thing with O'Shea Jackson Jr where he said something as controversial as "aew needs to tell me why I should care about their wrestlers instead of automatically expecting me to" and got dog piled like crazy. Dealing with that even by proximity is too much for me.

41:40 That sounds familiar... In the first three Tony Hawk games, silencing the common music plays the current level's ambience track until you play a different level. At least it isn't as ear-grating as the level-based music in Go Go Hypergrind and THPS2X's Club London level.
Lately, I made THPS2 and THPS3 music mods that replaced the ambience tracks for the levels in favor of carefully-chosen game music that fits the level appropriately, like using the Sonic Heroes Power Plant music in The Hangar and the Mega Man X4 Frost Walrus theme in Canada. I have yet to upload footage of the THPS2 music mods, but I already included a THPS3 Royalty-Free mix in my PlayStation and Xbox disc image files for the mods.

I remember a skateboarding game for ps1 and i cant remember its name. It was the funnest game of its type because you could crash and it would give you a damage calculation. So my friends and i would compete as to who could kill your skate boarder harder.

I'm probably going to eventually do an entire historical retrospective on Humongous Entertainment, but if you want a specific Pajama Sam retrospective by me, you can find one on my old channel. The audio quality sucked but I think it's one of the few videos that still hold up from that channel.

Since I don’t know if we’ll ever see another THPS game in the future, someone really should make a tribute game. I’d love to make my own Tony Hawk-style game! My game would be like Tony Hawk’s 1-3 but have humanoid dinosaur characters! I’d make the visuals cartoony as Extreme Skate Adventure and Go Go Hypergrind did and I’d make my game for the Dreamcast, Nintendo 64… and Neo Geo Pocket!

Hey I have a issue with the video in terms of how it’s done (the games are not the issue hear me out) when you are talking about the Disney skating game and your making a comment about silly stuff you “dislike” because of one of the bands you mentioned and all those random JPEGs come up I think the editing messed up cause the little Pop sound effect triggers after those pictures go away and not as they come up really interesting video nonetheless though…well now from seeing more of the video the popping sound sounds like there’s something wrong with the delays when you mention things like with the other skating game after the Disney game which again may wanna have a look at that and see if that’s intentional or it was a scuffed up edit thanks again.
