Leo's plan for the identity of the Mad Bomber being based off giving a story to toy trains sitting on store shelves untouched genuinely reminds me of how Wilbert Awdry himself based so much of The Railway Series in characterizing real trains. I think that goes to show that both men made something truly special that touched a lot of people

One other reason why Mad Bomber 2 was cancelled was because the voice of Andy Diesel passed away during production and his voice was an important part to the story.

"It just goes to show that a little video could go a long way." I don't think Leo could've possibility how prophetic that closing narration would be when he and his team originally produced episode 1. I still remember wanting to submit an entry to that video competition he ran but alas life happened.

I'm gonna be real with y'all. This was my worst nightmare for a little over 5 years of my childhood. The ertle model face with the sparks in the thumbnail just looked terrifying for kindergarten me. Doesn't help that I never wanted to finish the video after seeing the intro/preview, because I thought Thomas was the one being a terrorist and it ofcourse didn't set right with me. My dad would always tease me by looking up "Thomas on fire" if I ever needed to be kept in order. I dont remember how long it's been since I had finally gotten over it, but now I thank you for bringing this to light and helping me appreciate this video as a novelty for the model rolling stock set creations and practical effects used in this video.

To clarify before anybody reads this, I love Mad Bomber, I love Leo, and I don't hate him for any of the decisions he made, but here is why I don't think Bluebell works:
1: Setup - (This is an out of universe reason but I think it's still valid) The twist that Bluebell is even a character was not set up in episode one, so when he appears in the second episode his introduction would have either had to be shoehorned in or not included at all meaning the twist at the end would have come out of nowhere and been an anti-climax as the audience would have either figured out he was the bomber (because let's 'face' it, the guy without the face is a likely candidate) or it would have no impact on the audience, as they wouldn't feel like they've been tricked or that it was a tragic twist that a character they thought was good turned out to be evil.
2: Logic - I know this is a universe where machines have faces but how could Bluebell possibly have emoted or interacted with the other characters without a mouth or eyes?
3: Mute - I struggle with the overall idea of a steam engine being 'disguised' under the shell of a diesel locomotive which sounds like a massive fire hazard especially as whilst the steam from his cylinders would have escaped from underneath him, the steam from his funnel would have build up under the cover and either burned or burst through the cover or build up inside it choking Bluebell and his crew (and yes the engines do have crews as confirmed in the scene where Thomas takes the bomb where the narrator says 'The Driver placed the bomb on his running board'). Also both Mute and Bluebell have different chassis designs with Bluebell's notably featuring red side rods so did he wear a fake chassis as well?
4: Money - I know this is a criticism that you can make of many films but it doesn't make it inexcusable. Unless your going to crowbar in an explanation, how could Bluebell, an ordinary shunting locomotive from a small yard, fund the production of bombs, the laying of bombs (which would have required human involvement as how could he have prepared and set the bombs himself?), the blackmail of any individuals such as the Fat Controller who opposed him, the construction of a diesel costume with a working eye mechanism mentioned in the line 'the diesel looks at Andy' and (presumably) an evil lair where he can conduct his plans.
5: Involvement with other characters - This is another problem with Bluebell not being set up or having a relationship with the other characters, because now the plot revolves around him versus Thomas, it means the other characters would, like in TATMR, have little to contribute to the overall story and would just be extra engines for Bluebell to kill off.
6: Fitting into Episode 1 - As you mentioned, Leo didn’t plan for Bluebell to be the bomber when he created Episode 1, but going back and retroactively trying to make Bluebell the bomber in that story doesn’t really work. In the original story, you might think Fatty laid the first bomb to destroy Thomas and the second to destroy the shed. However in both cases he was actually going after something else, the first bomb was to break the connection with the coal mine, and the second was to destroy any evidence the engines might have found. Both have clear motives, cover-ups of somebody going after the engines and didn’t even require for the engines themselves to be fully destroyed
If Bluebell is the bomber, the first bomb he sets at the potato farm does hit Thomas, his target, but it also closes off the coal mine and since Bluebell is a steam engine this would also have a negative impact for him. Also he uses a bomb that wasn’t even strong enough to destroy Thomas and Thomas is rebuilt making the first bombing pointless. The second bombing would have destroyed the shed and presumably killed Thomas and the other engines. Except it wouldn’t have since Thomas and Andy both survived the bomb going off, and considering they were both right next to the bomb, perhaps some engines would have been lost but I’m pretty certain it wouldn’t have gotten rid of all of them. So either Bluebell didn’t test his bombs, didn’t get the right bombs or didn’t plan his attack out. Meaning the plot gets saved by luck rather than the events linking together to provide a tidy conclusion
7: Thomas - I know this is going to sound sacrilegious but considering Bluebell’s plan - to steal Thomas’ face and identity, the fact he uses bombs actually presents some problems for him: 1. He could have destroyed Thomas’ face and 2. He could have killed Thomas which would actually be bad for him as he can no longer assume Thomas’ identity since everybody would know Thomas is dead and somebody who is wearing Thomas’ face and colours would clearly be an imposter and would undoubtedly be linked to Thomas’ death.
    8. Crew - Again this is a problem that can be put against many Thomas films as you always ask either 'where are the crew?', 'why are the crew doing this?' or 'why are there even any crew?' but again that still doesn't nullify the point. We know the engines have crew (which by the way makes Rolling Stock probably the first Thomas film to include human deaths as Thomas' crew were most likely killed in the explosions) so Bluebell would have had to track down a crew that would go along with his plan but even then, unless he had multiple crews working with him, he'd have only been able to operate on certain days as on real railways crews don't just get assigned to engines, they drive whichever engine they are rostered with. Also this continues to cause problems with Mute as Mute's doors don't line up with Bluebell's portals, so the crew would be trapped under there until they lift the casing off and, as anybody who worked on Bullied's Leader would have told you, working in a hot, confined, closed space is not something you want to be involved in.

    • @ewanfawkes2708
      @ewanfawkes2708 Год назад +1

@@enterprisestobart We do know that Bluebell would have appeared in it's original guise with a funnel, side tanks and a bunker (or else why would Leo have made a model of it seen in the BTS?) so I think it's highly unlikely he'd have been fireless.
Sure, this could have been for a flashback and he could have been rebuilt (another tab on Bluebell's list of expenses and another tab on Leo's list of models to make), but then he'd have had to be rebuilt again for his plan to succeed.
Also (and this is just a theory but I suspect it would have happened), we see in the BTS that Leo made a second Thomas model, now this could have been a stunt Thomas for an explosion, but given how many stunt Thomas' were used in part 1 and the fact Leo was already experimenting with cloning and could have made a cast Thomas, it's likely that Bluebell's plan would have briefly succeed in part 2 or 3 and we get a standoff between the two Thomas'. Meaning Bluebell would have had to be rebuilt back into a fired locomotive fairly quickly so there wasn't a gap between him winning and him becoming Thomas.

Great retrospective mate! I remember watching the Mad Bomber not that long ago and had always seen the little trailers and hints that followed from it. It’s a shame that the sequel was never finished, though he did have a lot of stress and people going against him and just acting stupid towards him (putting up fake copyright claims etc.) which must’ve been a nightmare, which was fair enough to cancelling the project. However, in the TTTE Community though, this will remain one of the finest projects ever created (from its effects and sets, to its story and to the debate onto who the Mad Bomber was (though has been announced as Bluebell making all the more sense and connecting all the hints) and will always be remembered.

It would’ve been interesting to see episode 2, if we see Andy (Class 40) as the Mad Bomber or Bluebells as the Mad Bomber. Even seeing other characters that appeared in the trailer like Henry, Gordon and Toby, would they have their kept the same or changed? This was a neat project Leokimvideo had ever did.
