  • Today I talk about BoxBuddy, a GUI for your Distrobox obsession. Oh, you don't have an obsession with Distrobox? That's just me? Sad.

Sounds to me that maybe the create distrobox button froze on some terminal app waiting for cli input that you did not see and had no way of interacting with because it's hidden behind gui? Just a wild guess tho.

classic linux moment right there. You try to show someone something that either NEVER works or has always run flawlessly and you love... and then suddenly it decides to make a fool out of you lolol.

Take a shot every time Matt calls it "BuddyBox".
Understandable given how ingrained "DistroBox" will be from recent videos.
I still liked this specifically because of how Matt handled the apparently broken creation feature suddenly deciding to work during the recording. Kind of the opposite of normal demo gremlin behaviour.

Awesome find Matt! The command line for distrobox is dirt simple so if I need to use it no big deal but having a GUI is sweet!

Thanks for making a video about this. I'm seriously considering giving Distrobox a try but this is pushing me towards it quite a bit.

One thing I want from even the command line version of distrobox let alone buddybox is an easy way to export your distrobox to your display manager, which _is a thing you_ *CAN DO* in Distrobox even if it's considered highly experimental. That way it's like having a hybrid of VM and baremetal, where you can try out different desktop environments from SDDM without fear of breaking anything, like hyprland for example, which I hear does not play nice with VMs on Nvidia cards. I know, I know, "just use NixOS", but like, if I was down with that much manual intervention, I wouldn't be asking for this feature to begin with, or considering using a GUI version of distrobox.

you're not entirely wrong about creating images though. I found the list too confusing so I just created a distrobox via terminal and I just use Box buddy to manage the containers and to easily export apps.

I truly like this! I'm going to give this a go. Is DistroBox as reliable as running projects in Docker? BoxBuddy looks pretty nice. I'm at home in the CLi but a GUI is really nice sometimes. 🎉

could one not install an app store for each distro, like Synaptic, or Octopi? Then it's one CLI command for each box and after that, GUI. Unfortunately for me, I can't use it as Distrobox keeps erroring out and I can't find out how to completely uninstall it to reset and try again. But in theory it's cool.

I am not sure what the point in distrobox is other than containerized apps. Installing arch and having AUR I have yet to find an app not available.

I share your sentiments and that is that it is a start. Conceptually it would eventually remove the complexity of the command line for some folks but most of us feel comfortable there by now.. I like the idea of it more than I like it . Ill give it a fair chance to grow into what it could be....

I use Tumbleweed BTW. .....and it's your fault. P.s. I will love it when I can get my camera working on my MacBook air (2014). I don't mind zyppers being a snail, because it is a very informative and through snail. Being a former Debian user the syntax is very familiar.

Which programs are people installing through distrobox instead of from their own distros' repos? I like the idea of distrobox, but I still haven't found a use case for it.

some people use like arch container for development, and some stable distro as their host for non development stuff

Useful for immutable distros where you don't want to change the base image. Also useful for testing out multiple environments when developing software.

There are a lot of proprietary software that are distributed only for Ubuntu. With this, you can use in your distro without problem

Big fan of Toolbox, but one thing that still bugs me is the apps and dependencies are encapsulated, but your home directory can still get crapped up. Is there a fix for virtualizing that inside the box?

    • @TheLinuxCast
      @TheLinuxCast  7 месяцев назад +2

You can make (force) each distrobox to create it's own home directory.
