  • American Couple Reacts: England's Battersea Dogs & Cats Home! Animal Rescue is SO Crucial! For Jazz...
One year ago today on December 11th, 2021, we had to do the impossible, say goodbye to our furry, perfect daughter, Jazz of 14 years. It has been absolutely devastating for us and especially having to do the same with our furry, perfect son, Tyson just 5 months ago at 15 years. We are Animal advocates and rescuers first and foremost. We had to do something to honor Jazz on this day and taking a look and learning about one of the oldest animal shelters, Battersea, seemed absolutely fitting. Our goal with this episode is to open eyes to those who don't understand how dire it is to spay/neuter your pets. To adopt from a shelter/rescue instead of purchasing animals from breeders. It's an international problem and it's up to each of US to fix it. Jazz and Tyson left a massive legacy and we hope that it will touch you as well as it has so many. Battersea is a wonderful organization and we fully support everything they do as we learned in the video. It's the Christmas season and a time of giving, so if you are able please donate anything to Battersea or any other Shelter/Rescue near you. Thank you for watching and we hope this episode will make some impact.

I do not remember ever wanting to do anything but work with animals, and I was fortunate to spend my entire working life doing so. I have Looked after dogs in need of homes, and have had to refuse home offers from entirely unsuitable people too. There are no bad dogs there are some badly treated ones and badly trained ones, sometimes ones that had been trained to attack a uniform! So many people who "Do " rescue in various ways, and the volunteers and fund raisers are as important a part as any. Thank you all..

Paul o'Grady for the love of dogs is a brilliant show, it's funny, it's sad at times but the love that comes through from him, the staff and the dogs is immense... its heartwarming and they follow up with the dogs too. If you can it would be brilliant if you could do a reaction to it either here or on patreon and paul is such a character x

Everyone is vetted to make sure they can afford to keep a dog or cat and to make sure they have the space in their home. A few times on Paul O'Grady's program, someone took a dog home and sadly something happened so they couldn't afford to keep the dog or cat anymore. Or someone joined the family home and allergies were the issue.

I’m greetin’ 😢!! I adore animals and my heart breaks at any kind of abuse and injustice towards them. My friend in Canada volunteers for a non profit rescue and fosters dogs. She drives to collect dogs from kill shelters in the US and takes them to Canada to be rehomed and rehabilitated. She does amazing work. One of her most recent rescues involved dogs being rescued from Afghanistan and she helped to unload the dogs from the first aeroplane in Vancouver. She also has fostered one of the dogs, whom I have met (along the all her other dogs and cats!) and I also visited the fantastic kennels that most of the dogs were taken to, so beautiful xxx This video was an amazing tribute to all those who help animals and to the memory of your wee Jazz ♥️♥️♥️♥️

On the 8th of November 2013 we adopted Jack a Border Collie. He was in a pitiful state. He had been dumped in a pound in the Irish Republic, a death sentence if the dog isn't rescued in seven days. He didn't understand why he'd been rejected after about eight years as a farm dog. His many injuries meant he could no longer work. Animal Heaven and Irish charity took all the dogs in the Kavan, Co Kerry shelter back to their farm. A family in the south of England offered him a home, so he was fostered to a wonderful lady called Sue Howe at High Wickham until he was ready to join his new family. After two weeks these people who he adored brought him back to Sue. She had three rescue dogs of her own and cats which Jack hated so she knew she couldn't keep him.
My wife Tina saw his plight on Facebook and rang and said we'd have him (I knew nothing of this) on Tuesday the 4th of November. On the Saturday morning Tina announced that she'd like to go out for lunch. This seemed like a nice idea so I asked here where she'd like to go. Her reply seemed a bit odd and I asked why there? It is next to a retail park with a big pet supply shop. We had looked after friend's dogs on numerous occasions so I asked it we were having a little canine visitor? I was told: "No, we're having a little canine resident."
This left me considerably out of pocket.
In the early evening Sue arrived and I met Jack for the first time. He was clearly depressed, he took several weeks to really settle after the trauma of the past few months. What we began to see was a friendly, highly sociable dog who possessed great intelligence and charm. The only person who he didn't like was Tina's Mum who he would avoid like the plague. He was good with little children, he was very tolerant of those with serious learning difficulties and could sense illness or infirmity. Tina used to take him to a home for seniors as a therapy dog.
After a few serious health scares including meningitis on the 5th of November 2020 we lost him to bone marrow cancer.
We were devastated. I still feel a great pain having lost my best friend. Unfortunately due to caring commitments we have not been in a position to adopt another collie dog. When the opportunity presents itself we will rescue again.

We have just been adopted by a ginger tom cat. He had been brought by people during the pandemic and they moved and left him behind. He was living in a derelict garage and scavenging for scraps and sadly starving to death. We began feeding him and once he was comfortable enough near us trapping him and getting him to the vet. He wasn't chipped and was massively under weight. He has since been defleaed and de wormed, sadly needs some more tests about over issues and is currently stretched out and snoring (honestly never heard a cat snore as loudly as him) on his favourite place - the top of the sofa. My only regret is that he is called Ginger because we described him as that ginger cat who comes into the garden and if I'd known he was going to adopt us I'd have given him a more original name. I don't understand why he was abandoned since he is a sweet loving cat and more importantly we have a great shelter not far from us (I used to volunteer dog walk for them till my health and mobility took a turn and couldn't anymore). Great video ladies - keep up the good work with your non profit. Chris from Bristol in UK

My wife and I adopted our first dog Hazel from Battersea. She was 13 years old and had lived on the streets for most of her life. Her last few years were very special as we moved from London to the Jurrasic Coast. She had long walks in the countryside and enjoyed warmth and love in a house for the 1st time in her life. Since then we have adopted or rehomed Great Danes and Staffordshire Bull Terriers from other charities or difficult situations. I am now a dog trainer and behaviourist learning to socialise aggressive or unpredictable furballs. Due to my health problems our present pooch will probably be our last. Battersea is a wonderful charity and we support them financially and have left them a bequest in our wills so we will support them after we are gone.

Once you have a dog your life is complete, 4 legs and wagging tail of joy and happiness everytime you walk through the door, sadly 6 weeks ago our boy crossed the rainbow bridge to the great kennel in the sky after 17 years. Sometime next year when the time is right we will get another one, he may no longer with us but his spirit survives within us.

That was a heart felt video girlies, our daughter donates to Battersea even though she isn't working £5 a month is sent to them from her allowance. I myself donate to cats protection and myself and my husband donate to a donkey sanctuary. We love animals but never had a dog as we worked but always had cats but never bought them always adopted or took in unwanted cats. Our two we have now, Sherlock was the last of a litter so we took him in and Tipsy my cousin adopted from the RSPCA but after 8 yrs down sized home so asked if we would take her in and yes was the answer. Thank you for the video girlies, all animals need help keep up your good work. God bless you xx

Travel the world and all animals speak the same language. It frightens others if you drop onto your bum for a proper one-to-one, wild pigs, sea lions, sharks, penguins etc they all respond to a good eye to eye, a neck rub an offered treat. All any want is a little Love. When I go for a walk in the country most of those who are gone turn up for another walk. I even have had cats who have enjoyed walks, even with dogs. I looked after a dog for a weekend. 3 months later the dog had travelled 50 miles and turned up on my doorstep. Animals reward your Love always.

I remember my brother and I getting the day off school unexpectedly and going out with our Mum and Dad for a ‘surprise’. We drove to Battersea and met Zoe who was a slightly chunky Doberman who had been surrendered because she wasn’t vicious enough to be a guard dog. She ended up being our best friend growing up and would have to split her night between my brothers bedroom (bed) and my bedroom (bed) as she could never decide who to sleep with despite our parents telling us before adopting her that any dog we got would not be allowed in the bedrooms. lol We had her for 10 wonderful years and despite divorces, moving away and starting our own lives we were all there gathered around her bed, crying and laughing as we remembered silly stories together when she was finally put to sleep. I know for a fact that my childhood would not have been half as happy or fun without Zoe in it. ❤

Looking through your channel, l seen the pictures of Jazz such a beautiful girl and of Tyson, his Handsome boy...They Never leave our hearts but the pain eases and memories stay strong in our hearts for ever..When our cat Pickles past in the night at 14 years old,it was hard..And our dog, Molliedog took it hard...And sadly 6 months later we had to let go of Molliedog our Staffordshire bull terrier, because she suffered from severe seizures..It was hardest time, as my mum hugged her and rubbed her belly and l rubbed her face and head and looking into her eyes, until she was at peace was the hardest thing ever..l had to do in my life... With that said, l feel your pain and my heart goes out to u both...Love & Peace to both of u.... From David and Crystal...P.S. sorry if it bit long. .And Crystal, she my dog in my photo...But every birthday and Xmas we still light a candle for Pickles and Molliedog in remembrance of the love and light they both brought to your hearts

Battersea is an amazing place, and as it's quite high profile it gets a lot of attention, it is also in the heart of London which has a population of around 9 million so it's doing ok. The real help is needed in the smaller shelters in the rest of the country that don't get the publicity. Another great place is Dogs 4 Rescue, a kennel free environment for dogs that wouldn't do well in a traditional kennel, the staff work with them until they are ready for a new home, they have a lot of videos on RUclips and Facebook too. I've always rescued, have 2 cats at the moment, but hope to get another dog in the future.

I now have another rescue Border collie from a working farm she was 15 weeks old when we adopted her. She’s now 4 . She has typical collie issues including. OCD and ADHD which is confirmed . Since having her . I’m now a trained Dog trainer. Dogs are my life and soul.

And Bastian is a sprinter spanial, he had been owned by a family who kept him chained up and never bothered to name him. We took him in when he was 2 yrs old and have never regretted it. At 4/5 yrs he is still such a puppy and only wants to be loved.

Just watched your blog about Battersea dogs and cats home.
I was in tears as I had 2 dogs from Battersea and it brought back good memories of the times we had together. The first one was Lucky who was a Border Collie mix. She was 18 months old when we got her. We had to have her euthanised because of cancer when she was 15 years old.
The 2nd dog was Florence or Flo for short. She was 3 years old when we got her. We had to have her euthanised when she was also 15 years old because of cancer. Flo was a German Shepherd Doberman mix. Unfortunately I can’t have a dog at the moment due to health issues. I still miss them both. I would strongly recommend that you give something to your local shelter or rescue group as they do such a good job and they need all the help they can get, wether it’s money or time

Another rescue centre that you need to look at is the Blue Cross. They were formed during the First World War and are still going today. They rescue not just dogs and cats, but any domestic animal like rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice and of course horses which is where it started. I would suggest you watch the film War Horse which is all about why it was started and how. A warning though you will needed a box or two of tissues each.

It is only 8 pounds a month (2 coffees) to contribute to his welfare. Battersea is the oldest institution and does great work. You should check out "Paul O'Grady For the Love of Dogs", he is not only an ambassador but a volounteer.
