Yonks ago, when I was a schoolboy in London, a visit to Harrods (in my case generally with my godfather) was a peaceful, yet wonderous experience. The pet shop, the grand staircases, the huge piano dept, and an enforced dress code for customers to enter. It simply wasn't like any other department store. Today, while still offering quality goods at extravagant prices, it's more like an overcrowded tourist trap.

I used to work in Harrods - it is huge! And takes ages to find your way around. I worked in the Harrods warehouse that is/was across the road that is now been turned into apartments and an expensive hotel I believe. I worked there in the early 1980s. The warehouse was linked to the main store via huge tunnels and things would be brought through the tunnels to the store. I would mostly pop up in the food hall and then make my way to the department I was delivering merchandise to. I loved working there. For the super wealthy who live in the very expensive parts of London it is their "corner shop" and they think nothing of spending money like there is no tomorrow, with no thought at all. It has changed of course since my day working there, and then ordinary Londoners would shop there. It all changed with Dodi. I wouldn't even step through the door now. If you are a tourist you should visit the place of course. Just for the experience. I prefer other shops in London.

Christmas puddings can be flavoured with alcohol based drinks and 'flamed' with brandy which burns off the alcohol (children eat pudding too). We do have alcohol free puddings. I noticed you didn't pull the cracker correctly: the length of your 1st finger and your thumb should be in the join between the ends and main body. Gripping this area tightly will ensure that strip of card is pulled with the rest of the cracker to produce the 'crack' sound. Yours was still whole after you pulled it: remove it from the cracker and pull each end....

And if you noted prices, and found other suppliers who can sell the same at better pricing, haggle. Otherwise be prepared to part with lots of cash.

Barton Grange, a great place to visit here in Lancashire.
However, I'm afraid I agree with many people who say Harrods is so expensive. why would you spend money on such high priced decorations when you have a family to feed decently? I admit to never having been to Harrods and I'm sorry to say that seeing that video hasn't increased my desire to ever visit.

You have to realise, it's £billionaires & Arab princesses who are buying those ridiculously priced items but I did buy a Harrods Bear every year...stopped all that when I bought my elder daughter's chosen wedding dress there in 2007 (wedding was 2008 but took several appointments for fitting, a bottle of champagne 🍾 opened for us each time 😅)

Harrods is the sort of place that will sell you a Shopping Bag (that most stores just give away for FREE) for $50 or a $2 deck of Playing Cards for $75. YES its very nice inside but everything is so overpriced. There Motto used to be "What ever you want we will sell it to you" what they do not tell you is its "At A PRICE" that would shock most everyday shopper

There is an old joke about how you can find anything at Harrods.
A man walks into Harrods and says to one of the assistants:
"I would like to purchase an elephant."
The assistant replies: "African or Indian, sir?"

Harrods, a name that I always associate with quality.
My late Aunt always had an eye for the best of everything. She sent me the best Christmas card, ever. Use your imagination:- A man walking his dog past the quaintest bungalow, everything covered in a layer of fresh snow. On the roof Father Christmas had left his sleigh and reindeers. His footprints showed that he had gone down the chimney. The mans dog was on an extending lead and it’s paw prints in the snow showed that it had run up to the bungalow, jumped onto a coal bunker and from there onto the roof, following Father Christmas down the chimney, The bungalow door was open, Father Christmas had run for his life, out of the door, a piece of his trousers had been bitten away, with the man’s dog hard on his heels. It was the sort of scene that you would have framed and hang it on the wall. When I went to look for it to put it in a frame, I couldn’t find it. My partner said it was no longer Christmas and had torn it up and thrown it out with the other cards. I was so very disappointed and when she called it sentimental, I could have cried. A little sentiment in our lives is a good thing.
Keep up the good work Ladies. 🙏

    ORIGIN OF BAUBLE
    1
First recorded in 1275-1325; Middle English babel, babulle, from Old French babel, baubel, derivatives of an expressive base with varying vocalisms; compare Old French baubelet “little trinket”.

Have a LOOK at Harrods, maybe buy something that takes your fancy and which is reasonably priced (I suppose you could go overboard on one item if you'll get pleasure from it) but then buy most of your Christmas gear from local shops or shops which are priced for the public rather than millionaires...
HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL...!

27:03 - I'm surprised you're not familiar with the word "Bauble". Many American singers have performed, _Baubles, Bangles, and Beads_ which, I believe is a song, from a fifties American musical. (Singers include, Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra.) Yes, I know it's so long before your time, but it is a _standard,_ and the film version of the musical must have appeared on US TV over the years. (I'm case you're wondering, yes, I am old, but my real musical interest didn't start in earnest until the dawning of my teens in the 60s with the arrival of The Beatles, Stones, etc.)

Some people in the UK don’t start putting up their Xmas Dec’s until 12 days before Xmas, partially due to superstition,
This may also related to the song “12 days of Christmas”,
They will also leave the Xmas Dec’s up until 12 days after Xmas but no longer then 12 days,
This is the belief that it is unlucky to put your Xmas Dec’s up before the 12 days leading up to Christmas & leaving them up longer than 12 days after Christmas,
    🇬🇧😎👍🏼

    Merry Christmas from the UK!!
My daughter's birthday is 2nd December, so nothing Christmas related until after then. I put my tree and decorations up on 3rd this year , bit earlier than usual as we have my daughter's gf living with us and she loves Christmas as much as I do (a lot!). Usually though I put it up the 2nd weekend of December.
Harrods is very expensive, but it's a beautiful store and well worth the experience of visiting it.

The twelve days of Christmas are from 24th December to 6th January. Traditionally the tree should be decorated on Christmas Eve 24th December (Day one) and taken down on Epiphany January 6th (Day 12).
However who has time nowadays to put up the tree on Christmas Eve. I always put my tree up on December 6th and take it down on January 6th then I get a whole month of Christmas that incorporates the actual 12 days of Christmas in there. I never understand those that prematurely decorate in November and take everything down on Boxing day (26th December). These people completely miss the actual 12 days of Christmas, as they have everything packed away on the third day of Christmas. That's insane to me.

I did wonder at first whether Hannah's video was a spoof. She seemed straight out of the 1980s with her Alice band. I don't live near London and have only been to Harrod's once - about 25 years ago. Although the store was busier than in Hannah's video, there seemed to be no shortage of employees hovering to help me in many of the departments. Therefore I am a bit surprised that Hannah was allowed to video her visit without someone stopping her. Perhaps the deal was that she could film but only if she said positive things about Harrod's.
For those not from the UK, the main shops that Hannah mentioned are not a mainstream part of the UK retail scene. Three only have full-size stores in central London (Harrod's, Fortnum & Mason, Liberty), while Selfridge's only has stores in Birmingham and Manchester outside London. Selfridge's and Liberty are not cheap but not unduly expensive for the quality of their wares, but prices in Harrod's and Fortnum & Mason are generally very expensive - and in some cases eye-wateringly expensive. She briefly mentioned John Lewis, which does have stores in most large UK cities (but no longer in Birmingham or Sheffield).

I haven’t read through the comments, but thought I would mention that Harrod’s was at one time owned by Mohamed Al-Fayed, the father of Dodi Fayed who was Princess Diana’s partner and also killed alongside her, on that fateful night in 1997. Mohamed Al-Fayed, an Egyptian billionaire, was some might say ‘desperate’ to be ‘accepted’ by the British establishment. He consorted with Royalty, and the Elite, but felt he was never really accepted by them despite being a generous benefactor. His purchase of Harrods was another channel in his quest to become part of the Establishment. He died this year, never gaining British citizenship, bitter, some may say rightly so. He always believed that the circumstances of his son’s and Princess Diana’s deaths were not what they appeared to be, again some might say rightly so.

Family tradition was always. 12 days before and take them down 12 days after.
Harrods isn't what it used to be, back in my day. It's expensive tat, that is only expensive because of the name.
Just ordinary Garden Centres have better selections these days. And because you're there, to pick up a Christmas tree. It's a perfect place, to do ALL your Christmas shopping all at once.
