I've raised bass in aquariums for the last 50 years. Even bred both largemouth and peacocks. I thought your video was interesting but a few points I'd make. Number one, start with a small bass. Maybe 2 inches or less. They are more likely to accept being in a glass enclosure than a larger fish. I've tried to keep a larger bass and it's always the same. They constantly hit the glass sides of the aquarium and as a result, they bruise their lower jaw allowing a fungus. The fungus will kill them. A small bass learns to accept the confinement and even when it grows larger, it will not keep testing the glass limitations. You mentioned never letting them go back into the wild, but you didn't offer a reason. The reason is they grow dependent on you providing food. You can raise a small bass in a 55 gallon. Better to start them in a larger tank, but a 55 will work. I've had both largemouth and peacock bass spawn in a 125 gallon tank - and raise their fry.
Bass are awesome fish to keep. I have a 275GL IBC Tote that I keep bass, crappie, misc panfish, bullheads, yellow perch, white perch, Creek chubs and brown trout in for bait in the summer time. I take care of them fall through spring. I've had as many as 80 fish in the tank at one time over the winter. The perch even laid eggs, although the other fish ate alot of the eggs. It was fun learning the habits and feeding of the bass as well as the other species. You are right about having big fish in their with the bass. They'll pretty much takeover, so I kept a couple 2lb bullheads in there to keep everyone in check. Feeding them all was not cheap, so I'd do a mixture of a couple dozen minnows sometimes, freeze dried meal worms and night crawlers. Alabama Bass RUclips channel is nice to learn about keeping bass. He has a couple back yard in ground ponds as well as a 300GL aquarium he uses to keep bass and other fish. He puts thousands of minnows in the ponds to feed the fish and the feeding videos are awesome. Look forward to future videos on your bass
Sounds like a pretty awesome setup you have going on! I enjoy BamaBass channel! That pond they have right now for their largemouth is an absolute dream!!
Probably could have guessed which one you'd relate to! 😜 That was my point of asking though! I think people in general are more connected to a Largemouth than these tropical fish!
I’ve had my new bass tank for about a year now. I’ve been owning bass for a long time now. Rider my oldest bass is about 6 years old and weighs 8 lbs. he is so big. This helped so much!
The largemouth bass definitely stood out every time as I catch these beautiful fish every day and love them. It must be super cool to have them as pets I’m just a beginner fish keeper and have a 45 gallon with some community fish but it would be cool if I got more experienced and was able to keep my own bass
45 gal is big enough to raise a baby bass up to about a year or 2 years old! my largemouth is almost a year old and as of now i’m building him his own outside pond to transfer him into when he’s 2 years old!
When it comes time , just put him in the tank with your other fish if you can't find a home 4 them, depending on sizes , in less than 5 minutes he will be the new owner of that home , with zero renters. JK. They are fun hearty fish to keep, smart. Just get a juvy ,4 to 6 inches. Older ones don't do well with the shock and get depressed and die, knowing what life they could've had.
From South Africa and found about 20 odd bass fingerlings in a small drying up puddle next to the main Dam about 6 months back on a friends farm. Kept one of them and he is about 15cm now. Loves crickets, lizards , worms and bluegill fingerlings. Awesome fish to keep with tons of personality.

Got mine as a fingerling after spawn from a pond last year, started him on flake food and now eats cichlid pellets from fingers around 12 inches they make wonderful pets long as they are in proper sized aquarium
A good fact to add is if you cannot fit the room for a bass. A rockbass, warmouth, and green sunfish all act similar. But it is just a smaller scale fish. Do not add another and stick to bullheads and such for tank mates. Very food aggresive
Ive been in the fish hobby all my life and only went fishing maybe 10 times ever so #2 won easily both times. A largemouth would be awesome for me to keep but my house can't handle a big enough of a tank. However I do have a blugill :)

I started with a baby who was mixed with some shiners caught in a casting net. Didn't know it was a large mouth until I analyzed the photo of it with google lens. Now he is 6 months old and eats goldfish like mad. One issue I have had is in live plants. Now that it is winter the temperature of the unheated tank is 47 degrees F. The plants are doing terrible. Just added my first large mouth bass yesterday. Super excited!!! He’s about 5 or 6inches in a 150g. He was bought at a pet store and he hasn’t eaten any feeder goldfish in the tank. I’m sure he’s just getting used to his new surroundings but when should I be concerned?
How frequently should they be fed?And i noticed his belly isn’t the standard of “fat” we’d consider when catching them wild. Is there an ideal belly size they should maintain while in captivity? Thanks!!
I have about a 4" largemouth in a tank with a silver arowana about twice his size and even while feeding live minnows, he was also eating pellets within the first week of having him
For the record I chose the largemouth both times and I can't wait to make a backyard pond, gonna need to figure out a way to keep it heated or move it into an indoor Aquarium because New England's winter can be a bit brutal more often than not
I actually had some as a kid, rainbow darters if i remember right. I got them from a runoff creek that was drying up and had them for about two years. They are neat to watch amd like to swim against filter current bur mostly hang out on the bottom.
I caught a large mouth bass around 5" to 7" or so from outbound side of a storm management pond that had blue gills, some bass, sun fish, and mosquito fish I put it in my 250 gal outdoor formed pond tub with waterfall and aerator with water lettuce and hyacinth during spring summer fall months It's now a foot or longer and i want to transition the bass it to a larger pond. It's been fed worms and fish by me... sometimes dead mice when my cats get them fresh and I know its eaten frogs that have made their way in the pond. Will this pose an issue on relocating or is this only specific to indoor aquariums?
Nicely done, Zac. Only thing I can think of that you missed is the option of getting your pet bass, bluegills, and other native fish from someone like Jonah's Aquarium if the laws in your area don't permit removing them from the wild or they aren't in your area. As always, check with your local laws first, though.
Very jealous! I've always wanted a bass tank. I'm glad you did this video, I learned alot! I have a 100g tank with 2 bull head catfish and a yellow perch. I also keep an array of other fish as well. Some day I'll make space and time to have my own bass tank. Now that you've pointed out the space they need, I might go with a pond style aquarium. Unless I find a good deal on a 300g+ aquarium! 🤞😎🤞
I just caught a 1.5" small mouth bass And added him to my 34g No idea what to expect He is still swimming 2weeks later 🤔 Question Can they go with African Predator Hap Cichlids ??

That is straight bizarre. There is no practical difference between bluegill and bass
Caleb Reutener Exactly! Apparently it just comes down too how bluegills open season is year round where bass’s is not
Caleb Reutener I think some of it also has to do with bass getting 5 times bigger than any bluegill
Neon tetra was the one that stood out to me
Just added my first large mouth bass yesterday. Super excited!!! He’s about 5 or 6inches in a 150g. He was bought at a pet store and he hasn’t eaten any feeder goldfish in the tank. I’m sure he’s just getting used to his new surroundings but when should I be concerned?
I want to see a care guide on the sturgeon! That would be awesome!
They’re TOO damn big though!! Like 200 pounds min??
#1 on both of them
Yes please do one on smallies
How frequently should they be fed?And i noticed his belly isn’t the standard of “fat” we’d consider when catching them wild. Is there an ideal belly size they should maintain while in captivity? Thanks!!
Option number 1 bro, all the way
Agreed!!
I have about a 4" largemouth in a tank with a silver arowana about twice his size and even while feeding live minnows, he was also eating pellets within the first week of having him
That's a epic showing Zac
For the record I chose the largemouth both times and I can't wait to make a backyard pond, gonna need to figure out a way to keep it heated or move it into an indoor Aquarium because New England's winter can be a bit brutal more often than not
You could probably cover a bit and heat, it may help
We caught a large mouth in a pond that was actually to large for the net and was roughly 3-4 feet long
Have you considered keeping any of the Darter species? There are some that are absolutely beautiful in their colors and markings!
I actually had some as a kid, rainbow darters if i remember right. I got them from a runoff creek that was drying up and had them for about two years. They are neat to watch amd like to swim against filter current bur mostly hang out on the bottom.
Never knew this was an option!
I caught a large mouth bass around 5" to 7" or so from outbound side of a storm management pond that had blue gills, some bass, sun fish, and mosquito fish
I put it in my 250 gal outdoor formed pond tub with waterfall and aerator with water lettuce and hyacinth during spring summer fall months
It's now a foot or longer and i want to transition the bass it to a larger pond.
It's been fed worms and fish by me... sometimes dead mice when my cats get them fresh and I know its eaten frogs that have made their way in the pond.
Will this pose an issue on relocating or is this only specific to indoor aquariums?
#1 and #1 for me. I’ve had tropical and native (bluegill, bullhead and gar) and the native were more fun to watch!
I agree!! That's one of the things I want to show with these videos. Native fish can be just as colourful and personable as any of the tropical stuff
Thank you very kindly for the information sir. you helped me a great deal.
Nicely done, Zac. Only thing I can think of that you missed is the option of getting your pet bass, bluegills, and other native fish from someone like Jonah's Aquarium if the laws in your area don't permit removing them from the wild or they aren't in your area. As always, check with your local laws first, though.
Good point! I wasn't thinking about saying other ways to acquire them! Thank you!
Totally going to catch some babies and try to raise them
Loved the video Zac!!!
Thanks buddy!
Excellent video Zac!
🤞😎🤞
2:45 perfect timing 👌
All 4 stood out to me, what a great video Zac and it makes me want to get a bass now,
I mean.... You probably should.... 😂
I just caught a 1.5" small mouth bass
And added him to my 34g
No idea what to expect
He is still swimming 2weeks later 🤔
Question
Can they go with African Predator Hap Cichlids ??
Great video, would really like to see a SM video. I currently have a LM and it is a riot to feed. Really notice a difference in its behavior depending on the water temp. When its above 72 it eats like horse every other day. I am building a 220 gallon wooden pond for it currently. What are your thoughts on keeping a LM (under 14") with some male adult painted turtles in a 200+ gallon tank?
Yes do a care guide for a smallmouth bass
So weird I just watched one of your vids on fb and I just thought of keeping a bass an the first video was this on yt 😂
Option number 1 👍
