    This is a video I made in Bilthoven, a village in the Dutch province Utrecht. In the Netherlands, a train is allowed to pass if the barriers are down for at least five seconds. You can see a train of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Dutch Railways) passing by. In Dutch this train is called “Koploper ICM”. This video was initially shot on the 31st of October 2010. Two years later I filmed this crossing again: • Dutch railroad crossin...

    Trains in the Netherlands rarely honk their horn. Only in case of danger. It's also true that a crossing should be closed at least 5 seconds, that a train can come over. In this case, the time is short, but sufficiently.

    I was always scared of this railroad crossing when I was younger, I once stood in the middle part while two trains were crossing past me from front and behind.
    Nowadays they rebuilt this crossing into a tunnel and now I never have to wait for a train to pass by when crossing the roads :U

    Dutch crossing signals are very similar in operation to US signals. There are 3 lights on each gate, and the 2 inner lights flash in sync with the ones on the pole, while the 3rd light on the end is steady-burning. This is exactly what the US DOT has mandated for crossing gate operation in America. Gate mechanisms and lights are very similar to US types as well. The bells sound a little different, but I like the fact that they ring until the gates rise, which is required in California as well.

    Not sure what you mean, but yes: even sidewalks are protected with gates. Not only because people like to ignore the signals sometimes, but you're looking at a special crossing: the station of Bilthoven has a, what we call, island-platform. You can go left or right if you want to leave the platform, which is why there are so many gates: every track has it's own independently operated set of lights, gates and bells, with additional safety so cars don't get stuk on 1 track while other is closed

    Well, the main reason Dutch trains don't use the horn is the thought that red lights, bells and barriers should be sufficient. Furthermore, the Dutch rail system is one of the most dense and busiest in the world. So at the busy places you would hear train horns all day and that would make it totally unsuitable as a warning device.

    In Poland, like in Czech, about 2 minutes or more. But in most cases barriers are connected with semaphores and fall whenever a train enters the closest section. In less densed areas it can be quite long and you wait a few minutes.

  • @cedarcam
    @cedarcam 11 лет назад

    It depends on the type of crossing. The crossings with full barriers can be closed to road traffic a lot longer than the ones with half barriers. Normal timing is Yodalarms sound & 3 seconds of steady amber. Amber lights go out and 5 seconds flashing reds. Barriers lower. Entrance barriers first and when fully down the exit barriers. 8- 10 secs per pair. When fully down Yodalarms silenced. Signal clears. Train passes. Time depends on distance away from crossing it was when commanded to close.

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy 7 лет назад

      Ah, so that's why UK-crossings are closed earlier. Dutch level crossings don't feature a connection with the signals along the tracks most of the time (a green signal will NOT guarantee a safe crossing (for the train that is))
      I can understand you want to have it closed well in advance of the train passing if a signal has to clear for the train to be able to pass.

    I live close to that railroad crossing, and I go like every week over it. And everytime when there's coming a train you her bels, and you can see the red lights. Its very normal in Netherland, but sometimes some railroad crossing doesn't work, so sometimes does the trains make a sound when that happend. And you can her that very well. And there isn't a horn so far as I know, and the speed is normal for here.

    It's not so strange that our barriers, gates and stuff look so similar: when our rail-road system was to be modernised around the 1940'-1950's, they didn't want to invent something completely new. Instead, they took a good look abroad, in the US, where they found a good system of barriers and other equipment. The US-equipment was completely altered to meet the Dutch standards, and has become our standard rail-road crossing protection.

    In the netherlands they only honk if there is a malfunction with the crossing. There is a special procedure for those events, train stops for every crossing, honks, and take off again. They also honk on crossings without warninglights, gates or bells. But those crossings are rare.
    In this vid there is a malfunction and they use the procedure: /watch?v=DOs4Y9LUV2s

      Trains are here only using the horn when something dangerous happens. or sometimes to the people who are filming the train. And how fast that train is comming is normal here.
