Can you tell me what all these types of crossing names mean? I have heard of ADOB, AHOB, AKI, EBO and such, what do they all mean? I mainly need to know this so I can use the Train Simulator crossings by Coha that have been on this channel before.
They are abbreviations of the types of crossings typically found in the Netherlands in both past and present.
The ADOB is a very rare type of crossing, only a few exist in the Netherlands. The letters stand for something like 'Automatic Double Crossing Barries': Both directions of a road are completely closed off by gates (I replaced 'gates' by barriers in all explanations so the abbreviations still make some sense)
Features a lot of lights, bells and crossbucks.
AHOB is Automatic Half Crossing Barriers. Only in the driving direction, gates close down the road from the tracks.
AKI is Automatic Blinking Signal: this type of crossing is only found on private properties, closed for the public, as this crossing does not feature any gates. Many accidents have happened on these crossings in the past, a reason they were all replaced by the mini-type of an AHOB, which, except for minor details, is exactly the same as an AHOB.
Than, there is also an AOB: Automatic Cross-path Barrier. This is a type of crossing similar to the AHOB. It has no lights and crossbucks and a bell that only sounds when the crossing is activated and the gate is coming down. As soon as the gate is down, the bell stops.
An increasing amount of these crossings is being fitted with a light at every side. This type of crossing can only be found on stations, where they secure a crosswalk to another platform.
The EBO is an 'Electrically Controlled Level Crossing'. That sounds rather silly, as all other types are electrically activated as well, but it means that it's controlled manually. Dispatch will activate this crossing remotely from a signalhouse 'nearby' (This can be kilometers away, the crossing is only monitored with camera's and mics)
This is also a very rare type of crossing. There were many in the past, but as train- and motortraffic grew rapidly, many were replaced by AKI or AHOB. By now, only 2 or 3 exist in the Netherlands. It features only few lights and crossbucks, does not have any bells and has HUGE gates. These crossings are only found at places where there are more than 5 tracks to be crossed: 5 tracks is the maximum for an AHOB.
Because the gates on EBO's are coupled to the signals for the trains, they have to close the gates in time, otherwise the train will encounter a signal to stop. This makes up for long waiting times for car-traffic as many people will ignore the flashing red lights and jump the tracks, with dispatch closing the gates earlier than really necessary. Don't be surprised to be waiting there for a few minutes without something actually happening ;)

Thanks. I don't understand why this crossing would be rare :/ Where I live, in the UK, we have a similar type called an AFBC (Automatic Full-Barrier Crossing). It is used in towns and cities with lots of traffic so people can't drive around the gates. It also has skirts, like the ones on the AOBs that hang off the barrier, which stop pedestrian traffic. They are extremely safe. Half-barriers are only used on roads with light traffic, and in the countryside when there are few cars and few pedestrians. Why is this crossing so rare?
Good question! He is so rare because it applied only get in places where no tunnel can be built and where many accidents occur. At the crossing from there were a lot of accidents at this crossing. Also unfortunately fatal. Therefore, there came this crossing. There are two more in the Netherlands, Diemen and Almelo. This crossing has since been demolished and there will still build a tunnel.
Ahh. On areas with low accidents they should still upgrade the AHOBs to ADOBs while in cities, this practice worked very well in the UK

live very close to this former railway crossing. The reason why it was removed was because many accidents happened like train suicide and 4 years before they build a tunnel, a taxi was hit by a train with a few deaths as a result of one of the barriers went not down. In 2015 the railroad crossing was removed and a tunnel was built on the site of the former railroad crossing. Now it looks much better and more modern but unfortunately at the expense of many old trees.
