Our American crossings are different in several ways. One: the bell doesn't chime, but dings. Two, the crossing has two lights instead of four. Three, the gates are straight. Four, there is no light that displays words.
Five: American crossings do not have obstacle detectors, with warning signals to stop trains if someone gets stuck on the crossing. Japanese crossings usually do, and trains are tested for sufficient emergency braking capability to respond to them. Six: American crossings are not interlocked with the signals, so that trains could not even approach the crossing until it is proved to be operating with the barriers down. I'm sure there are various situations on Japanese railways where interlocked and non-interlocked crossings are used, but it is at least a possibility in the Japanese system. Seven: Overall, the Japanese system is engineered with safety in mind. The American system is engineered with cost minimisation in mind. It shows.

Also a decent amount of american crossings have desagneted pedestrian gates, or even quad gates, showing our attempts for safety in american crossings, even flashing turn signals for roadways! The lights for each track and direction, are close to being useless,only slightly improving the safety, just looking intresting for railfans... This crossing is decently safe, I'm decently sure it has sensors, but it all comes down to human idiocy, it can be the safest crossing in the world, and some imbicle will find a way to got stuck.

OMG ME TOO! When I was little, I loved trains and seeing railway crossings. Especially Japanese level crossings. This video actually seemed familiar when the beginning crossing started up. The crossing even looked familiar. So I’m pretty sure I saw this exact video when I was four or five. Oh the memories! 🥰
I think I get it.The first type of alarm means it's coming from the first track and the second one means it coming from the second track and both at the same time, means that there are trains coming on both tracks....it's really simple when you think about it.

RobertKorte1 Yea, it seems that there are two different railroads here (especially with the lights that say "JR" on them). Still find it odd that each railroad uses a different bell. I know here in the US, even if the two railroads operate separate tracks at a crossing, they'll still use the same bell unless it's at a crossing where they also have separate grades or each railroad maintains their half of the crossing.
because the crossing had to be put together like that you see. the top bell is only triggered when a train come on the high tracks and the bottom bell is triggered from the low tracks it would be weird have the same bell for each track

6年ほど前踏切にハマってた頃よく見てた動画にやっと辿り着けた
一畑電車が先に電化され、JRはその後も1982年 (当時は国鉄) まで非電化だったので「汽車」「電車」はその名残です。ちなみに今は「JR」「一畑」に変わっています。
まだ電鈴式で残ってるんですかね?

山陰本線の電化は遅く1974(昭和49)年までSLが走っていたからJRが[汽車]表記なのも成程ですね。あと、JRと一畑では踏切の始動点が違うのでしょう。JRの踏切鳴動から列車通過までの長さが一畑のそれより遥かに長いのはそれぞれの最高速度の違いもあるでしょうがブレーキ性能もまるで違うことの方が大きいかと愚考します。今でこそJRも電化して近代車輛になりましたがかつてのSL時代はブレーキ性能も低く同じ速度で走っていても電車に比べて停まるまでの距離が遥かに長かったのです(今でも貨物列車などは停まるまで距離が必要です。構造上の宿命です)。その名残でしょうね。

静岡鉄道にもJRと並走する区間があるんですが、踏切警報機は完全に共用しているのでまったく同じ動作と音なんですよね。これは珍しい踏切ですよ。

地域によっては、国鉄(現JR)の列車を「汽車」、私鉄(ただし電鉄に限る)の列車を「電車」というところもあるようです。私のような朝倉人ですとJR(かつての国鉄)を「汽車」といい、西鉄を「(急行)電車」などといったりします。(ただし、これはオジサンばかりで、若い人は違うかもしれません。)
