    I love that she's doing clothes from Wal-Mart, it's something a lot of people can afford & find exactly similar to what she has. It's good for learning & going along with her. She made them so cute! I hope we see some more walmart or similar stores.

    • @lestranged
      @lestranged 4 года назад +38

      And her alterations did not cost much either. The first top, the only supply she had to buy was the thin elastic. (and many home sewists would already have it).

    The great secret of this video is that everything seems more expensive when it's tailored for the body it's on. What's awesome is that, as a person who feels more self conscious about weight, nearly every "but-make-it-sexier" look here works for me. The absent panel in the seafoam top wouldn't feel too exposing since the top could be tailored right up to smallest point on my upper body, then left to hang loose and taper my body perfectly, rather than being cropped -- less work than what April does. The same trick works even more obviously in her alteration of the peasant top, where one only needs to put the bottom elastic line in the smallest place on the body to make a genius false waist. I particularly like it with that top, since this kind of shapeless top tends to be hefted toward people worried about weight and everybody can gather it like this and be like-- "Look! trendy and sexy! Body under there!" without sacrificing joy to something that holds the body in in hot weather.

    The princess seams on the shorts were a brilliant addition ! I've been trying to decide how to alter several pairs of thrifted trousers and never even thought of princess seams.

    • @LaynieFingers
      @LaynieFingers 4 года назад +18

      A lot of the time this is true. There are ways to save money, though.
      Whenever I wear something out, I strip it down. I have a box with a bunch of bag hardware, zippers, buttons, etc that I've rescued from clothes that are beyond repair. I also save any fabric that can be rescued (like pants legs, for example).
      You can sometimes find fabric and/or items to make or remake while you're thrifting. Also, look for sales- I found an adorable striped jersey fabric that was on clearance for 50 cents a yard!
      And don't forget the stores like Joann's that have great coupons! Those can really save you some money, which is always welcome!

    • @annieharover6617
      @annieharover6617 4 года назад +9

      That's why places like goodwill are so useful! You are reusing other people's clothes to make your own design. I think making from scratch can also be good, though. I think it helps you understand how the garments come together, and how sewing in general works.

      Hahaa I can toootally see this, it's low-key a genius business idea, selling that blouse in an 'upcycle kit' with some elastic and thread and a card with instructions for like 3 different style options, selling it for more money while saving on actual manufacturing costs.. Obviously I hate this idea because you're not actually saving and upcycling trash, but yeah it could make money.

    I alter clothing all the time. In fact, I am watching this video after altering two shirts. I have a large bust but a small rib cage, and I am short-waisted. It can be hard to find something that fits everywhere at once. I've learned a lot over the years of what it takes to make something flattering, so now I focus on whether something fits in the bust. If it does, I know I can fix the rest with easy fixes like elastic, tucks, darts, taking in the sides or shoulders, removing sleeves, cropping sleeves, whatever. Knowing how to sew is a gamechanger.
