How to Use Teasers for Striped Bass in the Surf

  • Striped bass aren't a notoriously finicky species of fish. They don't have the excellent eyesight of a bluefin tuna or false albacore, but this doesn't mean they can't be picky, especially when surfcasting from sand beaches.
    When striped bass are feeding on small bait like sand eels, fishing a teaser in front of a larger striper lure can fool finicky stripers. In this video, On The Water editor Jimmy Fee walks through a fast and simple way to rig a soft plastic teaser.
    By using a 50lb Tactical Anglers clip with a 10 inch section of Seaguar fluorocarbon attached to your teaser of choice, you can easily add or remove the whole rig from the bottom rung of your barrel swivel.
    Although a teaser presents a small profile, they've been responsible for landing countless big striped bass along the beaches of Cape Cod.

      That's a Flatlander Surfcasting 4-Tube Bag, but I replaced the circular tubes with rectangular downspouts.

    Thank for the info, what rod and reel setup are you using there?

      It's a Van Staal VS200 taped to a 10' 1-3oz, moderate action rod. Great setup for throwing lighter lures and beach fishing, but doesn't have a ton of stopping power to steer fish away from rocks.

    Great tip. How far from the plug is the teaser?

    • @OnTheWaterMedia
      @OnTheWaterMedia  4 года назад +1

      Usually we fish a leader about 3-4 feet in length, so the teaser rides about at least 30" in front of the plug.

      Hey Robert, I read in one of Frank Daignault's old surf fishing books that it's best to leave enough length between the teaser and the plug for a good-size striper to fit, so I've always tried to go by that. My usual leader is 40 to 48 inches, and the teaser dropper is 6 to 8 inches.

      @@jongarrigus4600 10' moderate-action rod rated for 1- to 3-ounce lures, with a Van Staal VS200 spooled with 40-pound test PowerPro SuperSlick V2. The leader itself is 40-pound Fluorocarbon, with a barrel swivel at one end and a 75-pound-test Tactical Angler Clip at the other.
