Fun fact about child development: you’re pretty much spot on about how kids get their fears from adults! In their early years they look to adults for how to properly act and basically copy them. You can see this in babies who haven’t even learned how to talk, yet are yelling at each other like they’re having an argument (probably because their parents do it enough that they’ve picked up on how conversations work). They’re trying to make connections in their brains about how the world works and as they get older, refine those connections. So teaching kids early on that bugs are good and reinforcing it helps them a lot!

As a neuropsychologist by my first degree, I can confirm this is how it goes for the most part. It's called mirrorneurons and we learn some by observing others. Ever heard of the idiom "monkey see, monkey do"? Well the history of it is much more literal and cool than people think. For when the mirrorneurons were discovered it was based on a study a research team did with monkeys. First they introduced a monkey into a disclosure and in the middle of it was a device that contained sweet fruits monkeys love but in order to get them the monkey had to solve a puzzle.
Over a time the monkey solved the puzzle and got their sweets. Then that monkey was removed from the disclosure and a 2nd monkey was introduced to the disclosure. Sure enough they started to investigate the puzzle as well but before they could solve it, the team re-introduced the 1st monkey into the disclosure as well. Then the 2nd monkey observed from the side how the 1st monkey solved the puzzle and sure enough the 2nd monkey also solved the puzzle and got the reward. Monkey see, monkey do.
Mirrorneurons got their name from how we learn to mirror and mimic by observing others in our living environment.

As someone who really enjoy mayas content and everything she teaches about animals and bugs and everything else I'm very happy to hear she's branching into kids' literature. I am a daycare teacher I work with ages 2-5 but I also nanny for older kids as well. Even if I may be afraid of how a bug looks I rarely show that to kids I don't want to instill on them that they should harm bugs or disturb them just bc they can. If there is a bug in the daycare we teach them to alert a teacher so we can all bring it outside. We have kids who will gladly help pick up a bug and carry it safely to a bush outside or a flower. The daycare I work at is on a farm so we do get a lot of fun bugs! The coolest bug I've gotten to show and teach kids about is the cross spider I have arachnophobia but I know there are plenty of spiders that are harmless and safe its just ill cry if it touches me :) Teaching kids to not be afraid of bugs and teaching kids to show care to bugs and animals alike is so so important and every reaction has an impact. Me and my other teachers were devastated to see the neighbor chop down a beautiful pine today bc we know its a big hit for a lot of birds in the area and we were chatting about it. the kids came over concerned as well and wanted to learn where the birds would go now and if we can replant the tree so the birds can have a new one. Thank you Maya for being apart of helping the younger generation!

omg this teacher has the right mindset! hopefully their sensitivity to unintentional imprinting also extends to other things too. i really wonder how many kids pick up bad habits or even just inefficient thought processes from a preschool age. but yea, learning to hate bugs is one of those things that are just all too common and extremely unfortunate.

My daughter has always loved insects. Most insects she will try and play with and loves to learn about them. Her and I are the only ones in our family that will put them outside so they don’t get crushed by everyone else freaking out. Your book idea is amazing and it really is needed. Insects are a part of every day life and we should try and learn more about them. They are essential to the environment as well.

As a beginning teacher, I can certainly empathize with your worry about not being able to communicate with kids. The best advice I've received (from mentors, education professors, and even the kids themselves) is to just be authentic. It's clear to me from the way you talk about this book that your passion and personality will shine through and kids will love that. For the rest, you can rely on teachers and parents for help. If a too-tricky word sneaks we'll explain it. If the ending's a little sad we'll talk about what the characters could have done to make it happy. Whenever you work with kids, you're working with a team.

I don't have a particular background in insects or child development or anything, I simply work at the local library. But I do wanna say, that if there's one thing I've learned working at the library, it's that kids innately love learning. When parents bring their young children to the library and sit down, their child more often than not walks over to the non-fiction section to pick up a book about animals, cars, anatomy, or bugs, and their parent reads it aloud to them. I think the idea for this book is wonderful and a really good idea (and I'm definitely buying it). Any children's book with this much passion behind it, is one I know we'd love to have on our shelves, and I hope we do one day! :)

i am SO excited for you oh my goodness!! i LOVE invertebrates, and they're always overlooked when it comes to conservation and the general public! we all love charismatic megafauna, but invertebrates are so important too, and i'm so happy you'll be helping to teach a new generation about that! sometimes i think about the spider poem that says "i pray nobody kills me for the crime of being small" and i cry

Absolutely incredible productivity. Researching, writing and submitting a whole-ass book in one day? With bonus unused storyboard artwork?? Vlogging the entire day too because why not??? Clearly I gotta get some of that boursin

“By the way, would any of you even buy a children’s book?”
YES - my son loves books, particularly ones that are animal-related/themed! Mostly farm animals (and especially pigs for some reason) but I’m sure he’ll love to hear about some bugs too.

I grew up with "Don't let the pigeon," _____ And I absolutely loved that as a younger kid. I would look towards those types of books because I could STILL read those all day.

Wait the plot for that children’s book is so good! If I ruminate in the thought for too long of the bug thinking the family is his friends and then they try to harm him, i’d FS start crying, if a kid doesn’t empathize with the bug, they’re a lost cause 😂

Dear Brody/editor, you really make these videos feel like a warm hug. I hope you get all the appreciation you deserve because I can imagine the source material beeing a lot and somewhat dull at times (no offense Maya). Going through it all is not easy, so please take this as a token of gratitude - love these!!
