Brian, this is the the best breakdown of this song I've seen so far. I'm a seasoned guitarist myself and had originally learned this from sheet music, but there was a lot missing from it. You've just filled in the dots and crossed the ti's. RESPECT. You're such an honest and dedicated musician, all us guitarist owe you a debt of gratitude. Many thanks thanks. James. SCOTLAND GREAT BRITAIN 👍👍👍👍👍

Brian, in your opening dialog you mention how this song is one of your favorite guitar compositions . Dire Straits released this song and album in 1978-79, I just graduated high school and was in my first year of college. I'm almost 60 years old now and this song is Still my desert island song! From the opening note to the ending note, it's still as fresh as the first time I heard it. Mark Knofler, I'm sure all will agree, is the most under rated guitar genius's to ever pluck a string. I've been playing this song since it came out , until I hooked up with this tutorial, about 90 minutes ago, I could never quite get the nuances of the riffs finely tuned.
Thanks to your patients and time put forth to make this easily understandable both audibly as well as visually, I appreciate the song even more. Mark Knoffler, one of the greatest guitar players ever. Brian Kelly, your a great teacher!! By the way....to every and anyone who reads this......1978---2020, 42 years this song has been Popular! My question to you the reader...in 2062, 42 years in the future, ??do you think Justin Bieber or Kanye East will still be relevant?? Can you name a Song by either of them??

Man, this is great. I could watch you all day, Brian, I'm learning a lot. I'm an old x-hippie at 76 years young getting my jollies learning guitar. I like that it is very chord intense which is my shortcoming on trumpet. Every instrument has its own difficulties, I'm always amazed just thinking about it - even more amazed if I smoke first then think about it. Hey, just ordered my first electric guitar from Amazon, a Les Paul 335 by Grote with Maple brown color top. After half a century I'm pickin' up the guitar, wow, I love it like a lost love come back. Gotta go practice, can't wait to be good. Btw, I really dig your lessons. Subscribed. ciao.

Brian you are amazing to do all this work and give it away to anyone who might support your efforts, you are the best deal going on the internet, I've gotten a whole lot less from other teachers who can't teach what they are playing, and I don't mean to be knocking some of the great guitar players out there, but the truth is just that, they can't explain music theory in a way you need to, to understand it, so you just nod your head, so you don't want look stupid. Everything from True Fire to Lick Library, I've spent hundreds with them, to just get lost. The cage system is a must to understand song writing and lead composition. Thank You

Beginners ~ learning the proper hand positions is really important even if it takes a while at first. I've been a self taught hack since 12 (im 53 ) and although i can play my own style i never learned proper way to place left hand and thumb and now trying to learn a song is difficult as my hand is uncomfortable and my chords tend to buzz and not ring and never sound full. 40 years of playing and startingall over in a since.

Might have a go at this. Songs from when I was young. You done a good job and honest it is his style to get hang of so takes practice. Arpeggios very Django.

As I just started an approach to this song today I appreciate the many complexities of the tune. It's the incredible Knopfler! One can approach it in so many ways.
Work on the chordal core of the tune and then if you have the wherewithal go after Mark's articulation. Good luck! This guy has done exactly that. One can pick and choose the approach. It's a song with layers. Most importantly.....have fun!
    Edited to say.....Freakin Rockin Brian!!!

As others have said, without a doubt, this has to be the best break down of this song. My struggle with it is my timing ( or there lack of). When I play and record the rhythm part, I don't get it exactly right and then I try to play the the fill ins and the lead to it. Very frustrating why and can play some decent licks and riffs but why my timing always suck. I'm old but still have my wits and mobility so that's not the problem yet. Any suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated.
