The lesson on the fourth pentatonic shape was the missing link for me. That solidified my understanding of the whole fretboard. I’ve had several teachers and No one has ever explained it like that. Thank you for your generosity and compassion.
Dude, this lesson is so awesome. I’m an intermediate guitar player and have been on the verge of realizing some of these things. But this is so much of the meat and potatoes of soloing in one simple lesson. Thank you! I’m forever grateful! Thanks for cutting through all the bullshit. You’re a badass.
Same here. After spending the last three years piecing all this different stuff together I came to this conclusion that Brian has confirmed. Thank you Brian. Here’s the kick in the ass though. Today was not the first time I came across this video. I saved it in my guitar lists long time ago and forgot about it then saw it now. I’m kicking myself. Oh well maybe it’s good to find your own way and then have an expert confirm your realization.
As a guitar teacher, teaching for 40+ years, this is the best lesson structure I've ever seen for learning the guitar solo "roadmap". Hats off to you Brian, it's brilliant. Anyone watching who is interested in learning to solo and wondering where to start. DO THIS! If you follow each week's lesson as suggested it will transform your knowledge and soloing ability in only 2 months. It is a perfect framework for progressing onto other things, but even just learning this alone will enable you to solo over most music, and certainly any song staying in a single key.
I often find myself jumping around RUclips watching various instructors and never actually sit down with my guitar to start learning from them. However, this guy’s guitar instruction really seems like something I need to stick with and watch as many times as necessary to start really making some improvements in my playing. Thanks!
Actually, he taught you the entire Pentatonic layout on the entire fretboard without missing a single note and you didn't even notice. Yes, he completed all the pentatonic notes of a key on the entire fretboard. This is a really good video and he is a real great teacher.
As soon as you added the diatonic notes and went from major to minor a cog turned in my head I finally get it! And feel comfortable moving that scale extension around!!!
Even this rapid overview of the 8 weeks is incredibly useful to me. It connected a lot of dots in my head. I especially liked the way you gradually build out the whole pentatonic scale from the first pattern to span the fretboard and then link in the major and minor scales. You are a great teacher Brian. Thank you for this.
God! I'm convinced teachers deliberately did not want to share these simple secrets growing up in the 70's. Instead they just taught scales. And chords. Never explaining what you just did in 30 min. Thanks.

My brother, you just cut through thirty years of bullshit for me, and gave the world the most "to the point" soloing lesson I have ever seen. You deserve guitar teacher sainthood.
This is fantastic. I have noodled around with the Pentatonic with the blue notes for a long time...like decades. I always wondered how it extended up and down the fretboard in key. I wondered if it was jumping keys or what. Now I see exactly what is going on. Pointing out the bending notes, the blue notes, extending the scale and adding the #4 position fills it all in. I have never seen the #4 so that will be a challenge as will be finding the chordal tones to accent. Wow is all I can say. Now I have weeks of practice ahead! Thank you so much for this.
The title reminds me of the flight lessons I took back in 1975.The ad said “Solo in Five Lessons” but for me flying was easier than guitar! You are making it easier Kelly. Thank you.

That's one of the best guitar lessons I've ever had. Here's one Bobby Barth gave me. See three phrases at the same time. The one you're in, the one you came from, and the one you're going to. If you can do this it will give you a sense of fluidity and continuity and you will never lose your place in a piece of music. It's like skiing.
Why didn't I discovered him before???This is an awesome video, made it so easy. This whole time I have been trying to figure out how to move around the fretboards and watching this video made me love playing guitar again. Also the circle of fifth omg it is now so easy to play chord progression. Thank you so much Brian, love your work keep it up mate.
That's the way how everybody should teach their students , not covering their ego behind a hill of unnecessary words and theory. Bravo , you are the MAN !
Road maps are the shit. You are the 2nd person to show this lately. If someone showed me this years ago. I would consider myself a good guitarist who can improvise solos. Many thanks
I've only watched two of your lessons on youtube and based on the quality of the information on those videos I've decided to subscribe to your channel. Amazing lesson, simple to understand but opens many doors for improvisation. Amazing, keep up the good work.
This man deserves way more subscribers than what he currently have!!! Just great simplified and very easy to understand lessons for mere mortals like me!!! And by the way guys, don't skip the ads if you can, it might help him make more videos for us!!! Lastly; share his videos, the contents are just incredible!!!
Honestly can't believe how much I learnt from one video. I seem to spend a lot of time jumping between different guitar instructors on RUclips, but the way you have built up the progressions in each stage it finally make sense how it all pieces together. And your right, those diatonic notes make a huge difference soloing over basic chord progressions. Great videos.
Just discovered this one, lying in bed. Just, Wow Brian. Amazing how you cut to the chase and pack so much really practical, useful stuff into just 30 minutes or so. I'm sure a person could study this single lesson (I haven't even watched it all yet) and nothing else, ever, and develop into a good player. Thanks!!
Ok, there's a lot of good guitar info on youtube, but Brian always impressed me with his knowledge. As an old man I have to admit to being somewhat put off by the name "Zombie Guitar" After he did a great lesson on "Brothers in Arms" I thought ok.....I'm sold and bought his course. Total bargain. I have pedals that cost more, but learning to play better will matter more in the end. I have no affiliation w/ Mr. Kelly, other than being a fan.
@@zombieguitar Now that I've taken the plunge, I think the name is ironic. What your teaching is the exact opposite of playing like a zombie. Maybe that was your intent, and I was just too thick too get it. I am laser focused on learning to chord tone solo, not just noodle on scales. Thanks brother.
I don't know if you're going to read this, but man… I'm from Brazil and I had 2 guitar teachers and none of them taught me how to look at the guitar like you did in 30 min. I'm so impressed. Wordless. I will share with all my guitarist friends. man you are amazing!
Without question , he has taken the most needed information and put in a package here that is the biggest AH HA moments in a guitar players first 20 year's of playing and made it accessible To almost every single guitar player in the world ! Ive learned more in 32min than in 32 years . Thank you so much Brian . Ill be sending you a pm !!!
I played as a music student years ago. One year in "relearning" in my retirement. What a generous and wonderful, comprehensive lesson for intermediate study! Thank You Brian so much. I'll work on it. Now soloing doesn't seem so daunting.
I was absolutely lost in regards to scales, finfing thr key of a song and playing lead until I watched this video. Sometimes it just takes the right person to break things down in the right way. Thank you.
Brian you‘re really the jedi master of all the guitar teachers here on youtube. 💪🏻 I really enjoy your approach how you teach all these different guitar related topics. Keep up the good work. 🔥
This is the right way to go. The strategy is sound. It will save time and motivate the player. A great teacher with straightforward musical examples that can be achieved on a week by week.
Brian, you are the hardest working guitar teacher on RUclips, the amount of effort you put into your lessons really makes a difference to learning guitar properly. Keep it up man.
Thanks man, i actually understood you all the way through this video. Cant say that for most teachers. Im in a rut, lately and i think this is just what the teacher ordered. (light goes on!) Appreciate that!
I couldn’t stop smiling watching this video. I feel like a ton of people get really used to the minor pentatonic scale but can’t seem to figure out where the “other” notes are. I’ve been stuck here for so long and I just don’t learn from these guys that just show you some simple tip and then play an example but the example is a crazy fast kick that doesn’t really show you anything. This is possibly the most useful guitar video on RUclips
You are amazing buddy, I’m just now understanding my pentatonics and how to start them on what key and where, but this is fricking awesome! You made my life a lot easier with spending less time on theory and more on practicing. Thanks a billion!!!!!
I want to write a comment but I see that so many people have already written what I had in my head. This is just so logical and compact. Brilliant stuff Brian, one of the best instructional videos on YT.
I've been playing guitar for over 40 years and learnt all this stuff decades ago. And he's right that this is the backbone of guitar. This guys total simplification of how and what to do is by far the absolute best instructional guitar video on you tube hands down. 90 percent of videos in my estimation only serve to confuse new players. Really tics me off. CHEERS TO A VIDEO WELL DONE
I’ve been working on the 5 pentatonic shapes plus the “house of blues” shape for the past month or so.... playing over a backing track is so much fun now! Thanks Brian!
I have learnt more in this one lesson than I have scouring hundreds of other sites. I cannot thank you enough. It was like having an epiphany when you found the key in lesson one. I heard it instantly as you went up the fret board and it was a major light bulb moment. I will be checking out your website tomorrow. So grateful to you. Steve
I've studied under many different you tube teachers and when I found Brian I stopped looking for the best teacher for me. He is such a good teacher and explains everything in detail and gives musical example that are easy to follow. Thanks Brian, keep up the good work!!
I have played rythm for years and wanted to settle on solo but the solo journey has been far longer than all my practical guitar playing. I learned the pentatonic 1 and then struggled to get out from that position. I was lacking the foundation of the fretboard as described in this video. I gave up on shortcuts and went back learning all 5 positions major and minor. Even then my solos were sounding mechanical as I was lacking the extra notes. Now I know what was holding me back and the best is that I know where to add them. Same for bending. I grabbed my guitar right after this video and all sudden everything made sense. Great work. Last week I started with learning arpeggio shapes and again the concept is too blurry. I refuse to giving away another 3 years trying to figure it out. Can you please make a video like this one explaining the concept of arpeggio scales? Finally as u mentioned the upper and lower extensions of the position 1 are basically part of the next pentatonic pattern. One more week learning them allows students to know all pentatonic patterns and a much deeper understanding of solo.
I have dedicated the last two years of my life to become a traveling musician... You have accelerated my playing. Hands down! You are helping me achieve this goal. Thanks for the golden info! 😊😎
If I may add another week. Try to learn classic guitar solos by ear. No tabs. Just your ears and the 8 weeks guide from Brian. Improvising is fun but there is a different satisfaction and learning in getting the right notes and techniques of great guitar players.
30 years I'm an idiot .1st week mind was blown instantly and added weeks before I even went to them. How ? Who are you? how did you change my world completely in 10 min. Why was this so easy for me to grasp...i guess your the best teacher of guitar on RUclips because I've been trying 30 years to understand. And what perfect timing because i just picked up an 2009 fender American deluxe stratocaster . I feel comfortable after 30 years to say I play guitar .I cant never thank you enough. 🤟

Bookmarking Zombie and joining. Brian you have to be the best teacher on RUclips and definitely the best I have encountered in 35 years messing around with guitar. This lesson is awesome. Thank you.
If you cannot grasp what he's explaining here you will never be able to play solos ....i learnt these 5 boxes 25 years ago it took me 3 months to really be able to ripp with out thinking not 8 weeks so be patient and do not give up
Seriously…Thank you! I’ve played for years just using tabs because theory just went completely over my head, and I dreaded even trying to learn it. I watched a couple of your videos and suddenly it’s starting to all make sense 👍🏼 Best regards from Newcastle, England
This video has come at the perfect time for me. I am stuck in a boring rut, and I will begin adding in these notes. I watch a lot of videos, yet this might well be the most informative 30 minute video for soloists trying to exit beginner sounds and move into intermediate and advanced playing. Can't thank you enough!!

'HELPFUL'...almost beyond words! Thank you very much Brian for your generosity!
Thanks man! Glad you are liking the channel 😀
Agreed! Helluva lesson. For free no less. Stuff like this is usually behind a paywall on other channels. Thank you Brian!
Haha ya the name "Zombie Guitar" definitely may turn some people off, but on the other hand you will never forget it either 🤣

Where has this lesson been all of my life? Thanks you're the man.
Most important lesson ever
I don't know if you're going to read this, but man… I'm from Brazil and I had 2 guitar teachers and none of them taught me how to look at the guitar like you did in 30 min. I'm so impressed. Wordless. I will share with all my guitarist friends. man you are amazing!
That's awesome! I'm really glad to hear that. I appreciate you checking out the vid. Thank you 😀
Thank you so much for this, i was getting pretty intimidated and disheartened but i feel like this really opened the door for me
That's probably the best step by step guide to improvisation I've ever seen on RUclips so far. Thanks dude...
That's awesome man, that's what I like to hear!!
I played as a music student years ago. One year in "relearning" in my retirement. What a generous and wonderful, comprehensive lesson for intermediate study! Thank You Brian so much. I'll work on it. Now soloing doesn't seem so daunting.
Excellent! This is the best explanation on how to improvise. Thanks for these lessons!
I was absolutely lost in regards to scales, finfing thr key of a song and playing lead until I watched this video. Sometimes it just takes the right person to break things down in the right way. Thank you.
Tip my hat to you sir! this is perhaps the best soloing lesson I've ever seen.
passing it on to my son, when I am ready to.
Only found your channel a week ago an already learned loads. Amazing teacher. Great job
Brian you‘re really the jedi master of all the guitar teachers here on youtube. 💪🏻
I really enjoy your approach how you teach all these different guitar related topics.
Keep up the good work. 🔥
This is the right way to go. The strategy is sound. It will save time and motivate the player. A great teacher with straightforward musical examples that can be achieved on a week by week.
This was just what I needed to pull everything I've learned into a concise cohesive practice tutorial.
Brian, you are the hardest working guitar teacher on RUclips, the amount of effort you put into your lessons really makes a difference to learning guitar properly. Keep it up man.
And he's doing it with no effort..
He prob. thinks the amount of effort you put into his lessons makes the difference..lol
FINALLY...another one of the few dudes that i've been able to find that makes this stuff make sense. Sincere thanks, man.
Thanks man, i actually understood you all the way through this video. Cant say that for most teachers. Im in a rut, lately and i think this is just what the teacher ordered. (light goes on!) Appreciate that!
Wow! Awesome video man. Needed this about 30 years ago 🤣
I don’t know how this video hasn’t ended up on every guitar website online honestly
Thanks man!! I'm really glad to hear that it's helping so much!!
Wow, lightbulb just went on.
Great lessons.
It's like Dennis Hopper is teaching me to shred.
Thank you
It took Adam Sandler to make it click 4 u
I've been playing guitar for over 40 years and learnt all this stuff decades ago. And he's right that this is the backbone of guitar. This guys total simplification of how and what to do is by far the absolute best instructional guitar video on you tube hands down. 90 percent of videos in my estimation only serve to confuse new players. Really tics me off. CHEERS TO A VIDEO WELL DONE
I’ve been working on the 5 pentatonic shapes plus the “house of blues” shape for the past month or so.... playing over a backing track is so much fun now!
Thanks Brian!
Time by Pink Floyd, has a great solo and I saw A guy play it slowly with tab underneath, and it nails it. ruclips.net/video/jd23mlhr5Ho/видео.html
Steve
Thanks Steve! 😀
This is awesome man! Absolute legend
Thank you.Thank you. Light bulbs going on all over the place.
This is bad ass, I always tell the beginners to learn AGE. Starting with the G shape aka Pentatonics box 1.
Thanks brother from Warren in England 😎
If I may add another week. Try to learn classic guitar solos by ear. No tabs. Just your ears and the 8 weeks guide from Brian. Improvising is fun but there is a different satisfaction and learning in getting the right notes and techniques of great guitar players.
Agreed! That is great training right there 😎
Check out Brian's Website on Zombie Guitar. Especially La Grange.
Your channel and 365 guitar are the BEST guitar instructors online..
Man, I hope everyone that is a newer guitar learner gets to see this video......................................wow
Im new to playing guitar and this video by far is very easy to digest.
Man, that was the best lesson I've ever seen anyone lay out, Dude your awesome, You connect the dots for alot of us!!! Thank You 😊
8 week course? I'm in!
Glad to help! Thanks for checking out the vid 😀
The best of fretboard covering lesson. I watched it 6 months ago & didn’t understand it. This time I got it! Thanks
Any other channel would've named this video "Learn to solo like a pro in 30 minutes" and I would've just skipped it.
Dont sleep on these lessons!!! Most of these posts give up a little and you need to pay for the rest .This guy is giving you all the teaching you can handle!!! Great teacher for sure Brian!!
Congratulations. You've found the holy grail. I hope you find this early in your career and not late like me.
this is the best guitarr channel ever. in a day you have taught me stuff i've of heard for years, but never fully grasped, but you make it crystal clear. thank you!
its a gret 🙋♂
Bookmarking Zombie and joining. Brian you have to be the best teacher on RUclips and definitely the best I have encountered in 35 years messing around with guitar. This lesson is awesome. Thank you.
Thanks so much Cosmo!!
I watched a couple of your videos and suddenly it’s starting to all make sense 👍🏼 Best regards from Newcastle, England
one of the best lessons I have found and I have been searching the internet for 15 + years
Thank you Brian!
May god Bless You Brian Kelly
Brian, i wish i had exposure to you 20years ago. Thanks for helping this ole timer get back to actually learning to play again. The approach you use explaining these concepts and your demeanor while conveying the information is spot on for me. Truly appreciate your efforts and my sincere gratitude. Thanks!
Thanks Rob! Glad to hear these vids are helping for ya 😁
