  • The Gullah/Geechee Inspiring Natural Design in the Gullah/Geechee Outdoors (INDIGO) Project will be an intergenerational art project based on historic St. Helena Island in the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.gullahgeecheenation.com) led by Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) and multimedia artist, Monique DelaTour. The Gullah/Geechee have a historic connection with Sea Island cotton and indigo both through the hardships of chattel enslavement and the richness, warmth, and protection from them as textiles and quilts were created by Gullah/Geechee women over the generations. Queen Quet is a fourth generation Gullah/Geechee traditional quiliter that still sews by hand as her ancestors did.
Just as indigo adorns many Gullah/Geechee doorways, the textiles and designs that will emerge from this project will adorn those that wear each piece as they enter the Gullah/Geechee Nation and exit taking with them a product that will assist in continuing the living Gullah/Geechee legacy. As others journey across the cultural landscape, they will see the outdoor exhibitions and building enhancements created by the participants to add the Gullah/Geechee legacy being embossed on the land.
Donate by contacting the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition at www.gullahgeechee.net or go to www.GoFundMe.com.
