This is a great video. It makes me feel a little "homesick," though. Even though I'm from here originally, I live in Portland, Oregon. My mom & her siblings and there mom, aunt's, uncle's, cousin's are also Geechee Gullah from north and south carolina born & raised. They sound so different then the people from south florida.
I’m a descendant of Gullah Geechee people. I was born in Beaufort, SC. I’ve lived in Jacksonville, NC and my dad is still in Onslow County in Verona off 17. I grew up in Augusta, Ga, where my mother is from and attended college back in SC. My pop is from Hephzibah, Ga where his folk moved to after leaving SC. Most if not all of my grandparents on my pops side are from folk are from South Carolina. My mothers side also has some deep Gullah root as well. They’re originally from Georgetown, SC and left for Edgefield and then later to Florida and ended up finally in Georgia. Lots of the food traditions, language and such has been taught to us. I live in NC now on the Northside of Fayetteville. I get to teach those things to my churn.
I lived in Fayetteville for a min, not much of an identity there fr. I’m from Rochester, ny and also grew up in Jacksonville, fl. Was stationed at Bragg and ran all through the town, especially Shaw and ramsey/Hillsboro st but I always pointed out that nobody there had a set accent. Some sounded regular, damn near northern and some would sound pretty southern damn near like they from florida but the majority would sound slightly southern or country but not too much.
