I wish my family’s land on Parris Island (25 acres) hadn’t been stolen from them by the government for the base there now. literally our inheritance was stolen. and erased. and this was land they bought from their former slave masters.

I was that millennial who was influenced by Gullah Gullah Island. So thankful for that influence. Although as a kid I thought they were in the Caribbean 😂🙃.

I always look over this minority. I didn’t even know there were that many!

Gullah and Geechee used to be fighting words, but I was perturbed when a high school teacher said it was a sign of ignorance. I am from Johns Island and have family members that have attended prestigious universities (Harvard and Oxford), and have excelled at the highest level across various professions. All children should learn, early on in life, that your accent does not diminish your intellectual quotient. It only indicates where you come from.
