I agree with what the man said, "You wanna tax me, then give me good road service, if you gonna tax me, then pick up my garbage, you gonna tax me, then give me street lights, you wanna tax me, then you provide water service, sewer service, fire service...provide me that kind of stuff or don't tax me.." The frozen property taxes are the fault of the government; to ask a sudden 500-600% increase is UNTENABLE.
Let's come together for the Gullah-Geechee people!

That was Mrs. Cornelia Walker Bailey. I see I'm a year late, but that lady meant a lot to our community.

Sounds like a bunch of rich land developers wanting the land of The Gullah people. So they get their rich politician friends to tax the Gullah so much they lose their ancesterial homes. What a disgrace! Once that happens this country will lose another important part of our history! I pray it doesn't happen!

If they try to give out some BS cash reparations (there is a lot of talk about that lately from those who are skin folk but not kin folk set up by controlled opposition to represent our voices) our people better be smart enough and loud enough to refuse it (their paper is worthless), they need to give us permenant tax exemption and land. That is a true emancipation that has yet to take place.

Ireland has the Gaeltachtaí. Areas in Ireland where the language and culture is preserved. There is also a Gaeltacht in Quebec. The Gullah Geechee people need to protect their culture the same way. Fight the good fight. Bail ó Dhia ar an obair. (God bless the work.)

This is terrible! Surely, there is some sort of funds to help these people. This is an important historical gem in coastal Georgia. It should NOT be sold off to developers! It should keep going to the the family members. It is such a tiny place, but so important in our history and the history of these families. It isn't an Historical Landmark??? Maybe they could get some sort of tax exempt status somehow???

I think they people should call the NAACP, maybe they could help them. The people on Sapelo Island should be allowed to live in peace. Just like the native Americans.

Yes I agree 100% the taxes in McIntosh County have been artificially low. Their school system is one of the poorest in the state. Its a beautiful area and people are willing to buy property, build houses, and pay the full price for property taxes. BTW having few paved roads and bringing trash to the recycling center is very common for rural counties. Why should a culture be preserved that cannot keep up and pay a fair amount of taxes?
