This story needs more eyes! People wanna preserve the history of racist confederate leaders by immortalized statues but don't want to preserve our history & communities! This is outrageous!
I absolutely agree with you especially when they tax you so much you can't even live on the land but "supposedly" its to help your local law enforcement, Fire departments and Local schools.
Definitely have to do more research on our history…and much respect to the Gullah Geechie people of the island. We need to keep that historical place reserved for our People and our culture so we can know things like this
It's closer to Brunswick than Savannah. So if you're near Atlanta, or fairly close to it, It's almost 300 miles southeast of you. I just mentioned Savannah and Brunswick because a lot of people know those places.
I can see how this is a difficult thing because in a capitalist society their Island would have to keep generating money and that's hard to do with a small population that that was previously enslaved and deprived of capital. It's a difficult issue that I hope there can be a good solution
They don’t call themselves African and we are not African when we go to the Olympics we are Americans so why they call us African American when we not either one of them..
The geechee culture is a bit different. They retained a lot of the African culture and practices. You can visit the islands and even watch traditional basket weaving. And they are considered indigenous to those regions because of the culture and history. And DNA tests shows that those regions. The l geechee people are not as mixed. Great story... But the Gullah and Geechee people are two different people that came together. Hence the two different names spelled Gullah-Geechee. You only hear the Gullah history, which are the enslaved Africans. But they never tell the Geechee history, which are the Yamasee and Creek Natives that were force to take the title of Negro and came together with the Gullahs. The belief is that Africans was the only slaves. When in fact, the Geechees were enslave in their own land.
That was a nice story. Well shot and written. If you ever get a chance, take one of the island tours. It’s a beautiful island.
There was a children's show called Gullah Gullah Island in the 90s. It was based on the Gullah culture of a South Carolina island.
I remember that show.ha
I used to watch it all the time as a kid

My mom let me know we were Geechee when I would do certain things as a child .

The fact that we must pay property taxes on what’s supposed to be YOUR land is beyond stupid but I see their strategy!
I absolutely agree with you especially when they tax you so much you can't even live on the land but "supposedly" its to help your local law enforcement, Fire departments and Local schools.
Nobody, truly “owns” land. All the land belong to the governments all over the world….
We know about you and we LOVE you. My aunt used to say I talk like a Geechee. I didn't know what it meant then but I know what it means now. Peace
