rrsmh92 Yeah I really don’t get this part. In one of the cutscenes you can see him fiddling with an arrow presumably “crafting”? So why buy the stuff :/
No, there are other people with just as bad a taste in videogames hah!. Joking aside, as a game on it's own it's not super bad, just a bit uncreative. I remember Dishonered and Hitman being a thing around the time this came out though, both have similarities and both have way more depth. Also, this is a game in a very beloved series and except for the graphics and some modern niceties, this game is a huge step back in game design from those 10+ years older games. Right now (August 7th) Thief 4 has a huge discount on Steam, for under 6 dollars this game is worth it....except that Dishonered now has the same discount..
It’s an ok game but pales in comparison to the old trilogy, in terms of lore, gameplay and story. A reboot wasn’t necessary, the old trilogy had plenty of intetesting stuff.
I like it a lot, even though people sh*t on it. Moreso after reading "The art of Thief" book. It's became one of my most favourite games, even though I played the OG Thief games too.
Okay. So this being a new, different Garrett a few generations in the future I get. But what of the old hammers? Almost completely doing away with this mystique and lore of the keepers, the precursors, nearly all the established lore? This was beyond upsetting
At first i thought maybe there were legal reasons for not following the established lore but only after a second thought i realized that was bull too.. the title is the same as well as the main charscter still being garrett. The least they couldve done was use the original voice actor.. steven something i think? Whatever man i still played the game despite it making more progressively more and more upset as it went on until i felt like burning it by the end
They fucked up, lore wise it’s said that the pagan/hammerite religions were banned by nobles. The cathedral you see with the queen of beggars (who seems to be one of the last keepers alive), was an hammerite cathedral, with the hammer emblem still visible. They didn’t need to reboot the story but these were the days of « Tomb Raider reboot worked ?! Let’s reboot everything!! »
@@timolockpisser400 totally agree, the keeper and hammer lore was golden and the storylines associated with the two that the previous games by looking glass had created such as the metal age or the rise of the trickster, even thief 3’s Main plot of treachery from within the keepers inner ranks and sanctum all contributed to one of the most compelling sets of storylines in all time of gaming just for the new developers to throw it all out and create an insulting piece of shit that I’m sure their ego and hubris had told them was even better than what came before. I take it personally when my absolute favorite game series gets disrespected in such a way.
As much as I've enjoyed this game, I really do feel like the writing for Garrett (not criticizing the VC, who was perfectly fine *as* Garrett) wasn't quite as good as it had been in the original 3 games. In Thief 1 through 3, there was a definite character there that knew what he wanted, and questioned everything anyone asked of him. He was firm cynic, who didn't care for his place in life, and was willing to do what was needed to try and make a living, though he wasn't without a soul. There was a small strand of compassion behind all that stubborn cynicism, and he did see the need to step up and commit to just actions, even if the means were shady as all hell, sometimes. Here, it feels like he's fine getting tugged around by a leash without really questioning things or making quips about some of the hypocrisy that the other characters bring to the table. It's weird how there's a lot less strength behind the character of 2014's Garrett, and it shows a lot when he interacts with other characters. It isn't like you couldn't make a strong character out of a much quieter Garrett, more romanticized Garrett, but I think the original was a bit better written.
bro broke his no killing rule. in the first 3 games he just accidentally kill them by sabotaging their plans and then backfires upon them. i enjoyed t3 more even tho theres no rope arrows
he reaches the hand of Orion and activates the Book with the ring on Orions Finger to seal the primal away it was also hurting him since he has a piece of the primal in his eye so he had more reason to do that first, he then grabs the claw and throws it to her, before he could save her he had to seal the magic away and thats it
Still don't understand why he couldn't just zeal the magic away after saving Erin. There are a few loose holes and times when I thought "srsly wtf?". Still don't know if Erin lived or died though.
The way the first three games payed close attention to the importance of sound in these kinds of games makes the sound in this game seem like a dumpster fire. Even the cut scenes have background sounds be to loud, npc's babbling through dialog, voices out of sync or other conversations at different levels of volume.
I still don't get how the same game company that managed to get the full atmosphere of Deus Ex and make a new brilliant modern game that stands on its own (which was freaking impressive if not near impossible) could not do the same with Thief... Disappointing missed chance :/
Indeed. Night and day. I'm a balls to the wall Thief fan, and I could not even play this abomination for a few hours. And as a Thief fanboy, I was prepared to take a lot of abuse, but this is ridiculous.
I feel like they did went in the direction of Deus Ex:HR, but then they rushed through it and just screwed everything. They had lots of good plot points and interesting relationships, and all of that was reduced to being mentioned on a vague note somewhere in the game and instead we get Erin and the Primal bullshit. For me the disappointment is even worse because the potential that it had got destroyed. I had so much hope when I saw the trailer. It looked fantastic, but when I saw the game being played I was aghast....
***** I think a fatal mistake was diverging from the trademark storytelling ways of Thief 1 and 2. The initial cinematics played a very important role to the overall atmosphere. The new different Garret (both voice and character altogether) put me off as well. All the things we did together, forgotten (heh).
Boss fight, sex, shitty story line, Basso sounding like a complete an utter moron, idiotic gameplay... I could go on... ( shaking my head in dismay ) What a terrible terrible game...
Reboot itself was a mistake. New engine is cool, but dropping the amazing lore and story without a reason? It's not Tomb Raider where lore and story are secondary at best, so it can safely be rebooted as much as devs want. In Thief, they mattered.
Thief trilogy (especially I and II) are legendary. It has never been about romance, but I guess the sheer lack of imagination and originality exhibited by this game here called for it. Don't get fooled by the graphics and play the originals if you haven't instead.
this game killed the franchise, I couldnt even force myself to finish this pile. Garretts new voice "im a cool badass" attitude was almost enough to kill it for me alone
kinda wish they had kept Benny for the reboot. y'know...the drunk guard with the slurred speech from the original trilogy? *sigh* yup! I sure do miss Benny!
Really bums me out this game, it was dying to be so much more than it was. It was "modernism" that ruined this sequal imo, that and some poor design choices. However.... a few missions from time to time were decent, but nearly everything in the previous 3 games was done better. I hope to see a return to form someday and actually get the sequal we really deserved. If anyone liked this game but hasn't played the previous games i highly recommend them all. The first 2 are more dated and more unforgiving but they are a master class in stealth gameplay, thief did for stealth what chaos theory would later on do it revolutionised it. Thief 3 is my low key favourite, although alil stripped back in comparison to the 2nd and 1st game its got a pretty good variety of the first 2 while having its own thing going on. And dont even get me started on the city!! I spent hours exploring it and taking everything i could. It was fun to learn its secrets and the glyphs was soo cool. Great games with the 4th only being the weak link, but it is quiet the let down in comparison
I still don't get the ending fully. What did he do with the ring and the book? Did he free Erin from the power? Is the power now in his eye or back in the book? And how could the stone be in his mechanic eye in the first place?
He doesn't have a mechanical eye. This is supposed to be a different Garrett, a few generations later. One of the side missions actually has you stealing the original Garrett's mechanical eye.
Slinja This is just my own speculation, but I think they made it that way because they'd already decided to go with a different voice actor for the part of Garrett, so it would be weird to have it be the same Garrett with a completely different voice. Plus, with the end of the Keepers in Deadly Shadows, I think the original storyline had pretty much run its course.
You believe in ghosts? Did the previous games not happen? Garreth, baby, you killed a god, fought/hid from undead and saw magic, but you draw the crazy line at ghosts??
@@madnessbound I know, a part of me wishes they'd continue the story rather than reboot, but who knows, maybe a future game will pick more from the classics :)
@@MrHaunter88 I'd take more Thief in either continuity, but considering that Deus Ex has been abandoned for the foreseeable future, I don't see Thief getting back in action anytime soon lel
