    For those new to the violin be careful when you hear the word EXACTLY. Setting up a a violin initially means that there are standard tolerances and a competent luthier will use the standards as a guide. But no two violins are exactly the same so after the initial setup the violin frequently requires further tweaking. This tweaking often depends on what sound the violinist wants from the violin. For those who have no luthier to help them achieve the desired sound, search the web for some excellent step by step-by-step videos with great comments about doing the setup. If you are not confident about tweaking your violin, you can send it to a shop. Doing this will require making notes for the luthier as to what you want done to the violin. Include your email address and phone in case the luthier needs to get more information about your violin.

    We are a local shop, in a town with a population of 8,000 people. Worrying people about damage in transit is unhelpful - over 1,000 a year and well under 0.5% with any problem with delivery. Anyone can come to our shop, but if they don't have a shop nearby (which many don't), or their local shop doesn't set up violins (which many don't), we offer a useful service. We're a family business who care about instruments - we're online too because we have to to survive.

    That was a neat trick with the pencil shading on the top of the bridge. I will remember that next time I have to adjust a violin bridge. There are no luthiers in Cairns !

    I'm trying to get hold of an old violin which needs a little TLC so I can use it for an art project then hopefully repair it and set it up perfectly how I want it~ ^^ Good thing is, I've always had a bit of an obsession with violins and how they look, and have been playing for about a decade so things should be okay~

    Yes. There is an industry trick with a product called "liquid nails". You may have heard of it? It's a glue as strong as nails and they use it in the construction industr---
    I'M KIDDING!! No the bridge floats in place, held down by the pressure of the stings. :)

  • @Brembelia
    @Brembelia 11 лет назад

    If you glue the bridge to the violin, what happens when you need to change it out? It's only a very thin piece of unvarnished wood.

      If you buy online like I did you are on your own. How about a video teaching how to actually set up. We are not going to pay a luthier Hundreds to set up a $180 violin. It seems I need to learn to fit a bridge. It’s not rocket science and with a little patience a monkey could do it.

  • @Brembelia

    Not just violins; any instrument. While you are teaching yourself where to put your fingers, you are also training your ears, whether you realize it or not. Better to get the best instrument you can; do the research, ask questions. I bought a "cheap" violin and that's how it sounded. I realized I was making a big mistake, so I turned it in on a much better violin; no mistake.
    Besides, if you lose interest, at least you will have something decent to sell that other people will want.

    The person who thinks this is un-neccessary for beginners is woefully ignorant! Beginners can sound wonderful but need all the help they can get. A good ear is learned and earned but not on a poorly set up instrument! This attitude, sadly, is why beginner violins have a bad reputation. You have to care about every detail right from the start, a millimetre is a long way on a small violn! Go and do something else sloppily!

      Try putting peg paste or chalk. Also the winding of the strings on the pegs affect the movement, if done incorrectly the pegs will slip.

    I dont see how 'professional set up' is so vital especially for a student (usually beginner), when one can just learn how to set it up just aslong as they have a good ear (which a violinist usually has already)
