"i can only see flat things in the 1 mile of visibility that i have in my immediate surroundings, so therefore the earth is flat"... but now won't let the final experiment be called an experiment? can't we compare that "observation" in Antarctica part of the experiment comparing to other observations made at the SAME time all across the globe?

      It's an experiment to see if they'll accept reality once it's shown to them, or hold to their ridiculous faith in spite of evidence. Such experiments have been performed already, of course, and the results have consistently shown that no amount of evidence can change their views. Repeatability is important, though, so we'll soon see whether the results of this experiment are consistent with all others thus far.
      Prediction: When they see that the Sun does not set during Antarctica's summer, most flatties will hold fast to their faith that Earth is flat and will scramble to come up with a new, completely absurd "explanation" for how this phenomenon could occur on a flat earth.
      I have a secondary prediction that there will be hilarious arguments among flatties over which "explanation" is least ridiculous.

      It doesn't even need to be dismissed though, you can prove that we would see a flat horizon on a globe using a basketball and a smartphone (provided the smartphone can zoom in far enough).
      How I did this was to put the basketball on a table, hold the smartphone against the side of the basketball, and then aim the camera up at the top of the ball; the intent being to have the line of sight as low-angled as possible relative to the surface of the basketball visible on the picture. If you zoom in all the way and play around with the angle you can get shots with a pretty flat horizon all the way across.
      Flerfs will of course counter by saying that there is still a visible curve, but this demonstrates that as you magnify the image and lower the angle of your line of sight the horizon will appear flatter and flatter. Anyone with half a brain can look at those pictures and understand that if they were the size of a gnat standing on the surface of the basketball they wouldn't be able to see any curve in the horizon.

    Alice: Oh… uhh… I forgot to tell you… it has no body heat. And… uhh… it doesn’t need to breathe either.
    Bob: Wow. It’s strange that every experiment I propose, the dragon has exactly the correct attributes to make that experiment not work. No problem, it’s harder, but I’ve got another. We can measure the weight of your garage and compare it to what we would expect if the dragon wasn’t there.
    Alice: Ah… well… it’s actually flying, so you won’t be able to weigh it.
    Bob: that’s not a problem, if it’s in the garage, it will still show up on the scale.
    Alice: Oh! It will? Are you sure?
    Bob: Yep, no problem.
    Alice: Well, in that case it’s massless too!
    Bob: Wait a minute. I’m definitely detecting a pattern here. Everything you say sure seems like you’re giving answers as if you know it’s not actually there and you already know that every experiment I could come up with will show that, and you’re giving excuses for the result you actually expect (that it isn’t there at all). I think you don’t actually believe there’s a dragon in your garage at all.
    Alice: No, I definitely believe it’s there. The fact that my income and popularity relies on me continuing to believe has nothing at all to do with my answers.

    I've been teaching research methodology to PhD students for 20 years. When we're doing science, the term "experiment" has a very specific meaning and most studies that non-scientists would call "experiments" aren't part of the design family that we would call "experiments." But that's a definitional peculiarity that scientists need to worry about. We all understand that when folks in the general public talk about "experiment," they're referring to a broad family of research designs that attempt to systematize knowledge with varying levels of rigor. There's no black and white in there, just degrees of how strong inferences from those data can be.
    But I think that most of us intuitively understand that distinction, and we also know that when someone goes to arguing against something because reasonable variations of word definitions don't adhere to the SINGLE definition they've chosen to be most convenient for their point, they've already lost the thread. It's just another form of cherry-picking, but particularly dishonest.

Yes, you sometimes perform an experimental test of the prediction, but that's not a requirement. Making simple observation to see if the prediction holds up is equally valid. Of course, a single prediction (like a 24-hour sun in Antarctica) is not the end-all conclusive 'proof'. But it CAN disprove a hypothesis. Nathan also asked him the question about 24 hours of daylight and not the 24 hour sun. The flat earthers have changed their narrative from '24 hour sun' to '24 hours of daylight' as they know their grift on the 24 hour sun is about to end.

    • @sineout9294

      And the stupid thing about that, is that when the sun is making daylight despite being behind a mountain or a cloud or (hush my mouth) the horizon, then nine times out of ten, unless it's heavy overcast, you can see roughly where it is because of the bright patch. At worst, the bright patch will be doing 360º rotation around the Union Glacier camp in a manner impossible on a flat earth.

  • @john_g_harris
    @john_g_harris Месяц назад +10

    Of course an independent variable isn't always needed. Sometimes a single observation destroys a theory. Example :
    Assertion : In England, the sun NEVER rises in the East.
    Observation : This morning it wasn't cloudy and I saw the sun rising in the East.
    Result : The assertion is destroyed, utterly.

    • @dudono1744
      @dudono1744 Месяц назад +1

      That's how most theories are destroyed. Theories aim to explain stuff, so an observation that contradicts the theory destroys the theory. This doesn't apply to observations about stuff the theory doesn't try to explain, for example obervations about gravity can't disprove quantum mechanics, since quantum mechanics doesn't make a claim about gravity.

    • @PeerAdder
      @PeerAdder Месяц назад

      @@dudono1744 it's even more specific than that. The fundamental role played in science by hypotheses or conjectures makes it important to distinguish between testable (or falsifiable) and non-testable (or non-falsifiable) ideas. Only an idea which asserts or implies that certain conceivable events will *_not_* happen is testable. The test consists in trying to bring about, with all the means we can muster, precisely these events which the idea tells us cannot occur.
      Thus, every testable idea may be said to forbid the occurrence of certain events. An idea speaks about empirical reality only in so far as it sets limits to it. No idea can tell us anything about the empirical world unless it is in principle capable of clashing with the empirical world. And this means, precisely, that it must be refutable.
      Every testable idea can thus be put into the form ‘such and such cannot happen’. For example, the second law of thermodynamics can be formulated as saying that a perpetual motion machine of the second kind cannot exist. More specifically, the notion that the earth is flat implies unequivocally that seeing a 24 hour sun circling 360 degrees around you in the Arctic in June means that seeing the same thing in Antarctica in December *_must be_* impossible since there is no conceivable geometry of sun / disc / dome that would permit it without invoking magical physics that contradicts what we already know to be true. Equally, the notion that the earth is a tilted rotating sphere orbiting a distant sun predicts that the sun cannot set in Antarctica in December. So a single "observation" of the path followed by the sun in Antarctica in December (which is what TFE will deliver) is sufficient to falsify one or the other of these two notions: only one of them will survive the testing.
      Moreover, testability has degrees: an idea which asserts more, and thus takes greater risks, is better testable than one which asserts very little. And an idea that asserts nothing isn't testable at all and means nothing. *_This_* is the basis of the scientific method today. Therefore, all the flerfs hiding behind the phrase "we haven't proposed a model" are in fact admitting that their ideas are worthless. They should put up (a testable model) or shut up.

    I'm not even into this flat earth stuff but there was a Korean variety show called: Law of the Jungle Antarctica where the cast spent 3-5 days surviving on Antarctica. They explored the land, build an igloo, cooked meals etc., for days. Filmed the whole show there. Talked to the pilots, airport personnel, medical doctors in there etc., and documented their whole travel. So flat earthers saying you can't go to Antartica to explore it and that there's "special forces" there that will arrest or "kill" you is 100% a lie.
    There was also a clear footage of the 24 hour sun rotating and there was also no episode where there's night (dark) time in all the episodes. You can even see a cast member's clock saying it's 3AM but it's still bright as noon. That alone easily proves that the earth is not flat. No way a Korean variety show which started more than a decade ago would connive with NASA and all the others who are "hiding the truth", lol. You can even watch the episodes here on youtube.
