Hey, I got a card with a predetermined format and don't want to replace it because it has over 500 games already on it, but they are degrading and I am getting rather annoyed. Do I have to replace every single game file individually or is there a way to undo this without having to constantly edit the files?

My goodness the menu for this R4 software is a HUGE upgrade from the one mine came in. It's so clean. Now my menu doesnt look like a very dark rave party themed menu. Simple white background and black text interface. Thanks!
This actually worked, I'm thrilled! For anyone getting a "No flash card in slot2 error" go into the emulator itself and go from there instead of going through the root menu folder
@@kathy-lt6073 Go into the folder labelled emulators and choose the emulator for the game you want to play, do if you want to play a GBA game, choose the GBARunner, or if you want to play a gamegear or master system game, the Sega 8 bit emulator

Thank you so much! This tutorial completely replaces the firmware of the card but all the other tutorials just showed how to get YSMenu on the card, which you then have to boot from the card's own menu, which doesn't solve the timebomb issue.

It really is as easy as drag and drop everything into an R4 and calling it a day, I very much appreciate the lengths taken to make this as simple as possible. The emulators kind of all suck sadly, even the GBA one which is perplexing to say the least, at least for me, but the main attraction seems to work without a hitch which is what really matters at the end of the day. I just got a random Gold off the internet and it worked fine so I don't think the type of R4 you have should matter much at all I hear pokemon games have a lot of issues though so that'll have to wait to be seen
I came here specifically for gbarunner, I tried to set the emulator on my own, my ds games were running fine since I downloaded the menu from the website printed on the flashcard, but gbarunner was always freezing when I started any game and for the love of me I couldn't make it work, I thought my card was a shitty rare one that was not good for anything since no one seemed to have the one I bought, but imagine my surprise when I saw you had the exact same one as me, and with the emulator paired on the megapack you provided everything worked flawlessly first try, plus i get some extra emulators while I'm at it, I am truly thankful for this video.

To anyone who has a micro sd over 32GB and got the "?MENU" error, make sure it is FAT32 format. I had to download an external program to convert my 64GB micro sd to FAT32 and that fixed everything for me. Thanks for the tutorial it was really simple. I love this video. I've referred to it often. I just bought my r4 card. I bought one with games already installed and it time bombed which I didn't know existed at the time. So, I bought one of these. Mine already came with a bunch of games already loaded so I just moved them over to my computer for safe keeping while I downloaded the folder that you gave us. My husbands mother bought the game system I have and he found it when she died. He said when his brother was wounded in Iraq she flew to where they were keeping him in New York and bought the ds lite just for the plain ride. So, It's still like brand new and I've been playing it ever since. It's so hard to find games for the ds any more that work. But now I can play all my old favorite games on it. I'm so excited.

i did everything as instruced on my R4 SDHC Gold Pro 2021 version and it won't run GBA games on it and when i tried to boot up one it always gave me this message: "no game insterted in slot 2"
for some reason when I load up my R4 on my 2DS XL it gives a black screen that says “An error has occurred. Press and hold the POWER Button to turn the system off. Please refer to the Operations Manual for details.” how can I fix this? I followed this tutorial exactly the same way as it says.

@@cuerge3000 I just needed a folder or 2 folders from the link. As for the firmware, I already had it from a long time ago. I believe that the R4 firmware is different depending on the manufacturer and R4 card type.

Hey! I'm trying to play my save file of pokemon black, however the game freezes when i try to save. I didnt have this problem when i was running the 'official' R4 firmware, but that had the timebomb etc etc. Ive done some digging, and i apparently need to get a 'patched' ROM of the game that im failing to find. Besisdes, i'm using the rom from my official copy of pokemon black, so idk if im willing to download a different rom from a sketchy site. Do you have any other fixes, or just any advice?
@@DatCrazyNerf this "time bomb" is a hidden file feature in the original R4 firmware. After a certain date, the firmware stops working, forcing consumers to buy a "newer" model R4 card. Ysmenu fixes that by disabling the "time bomb" feature in the firmware. However, with Ysmenu, there's extra anti piracy files that go along with it to make all ds games compatible with it
This works great for me! All my ds games work and the saves are not lost either! However, the .gba files that I put in the GBA folder display an error "No flash cartridge in slot2" when I try to run them. Do you or anyone else know of a way to solve this? Also, where should I place .cia files for 3ds games? They do not show up when I put them in the Games folder.
In order to play GBA games, you have to enter the emulators folder and run GBARUNNER2. Then you will be able to select the GBA game you want to play inside the emulator
Be nice if they made r4 cards with over clocking features, like the R4 card itself that have mini ram chip, and emulator that gives the option the over-clock games that are kinda slow or are slow. like a overclocking that lets you go by 25 percent times, or 50 percent times or double the times overclocking.
I know it's been awhile like almost a year but i need help. You see I got an r4 gold card right to use on my 3ds. So I have done everything it depicts in the video. The only roadblock is that for some reason I can't put any of my roms onto the micro sd card like where they are suppose to go. Plus when I put r4 card in I thought at least it would display the menu even if I couldn't play any games. Nope it just gives me the white screen with the question mark on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated from anyone. Thank you for your time.
Got the same issue my dude. I had it working but I couldn't run anything on it so formatted it to do this and it seems to have stopped working. Will let you know if I can fix it
It took a while but I worked it out. It's to do with the size of your card and how you reformat it. You need a card that is less than 32Gb and when you format it make it Fat32. You can do that in the formatting menu, idk why Anton left that out
Hey has something changed between now and the upload date? Following the instructions, my R4 card shows a Spongebob game, and when launched, I get an error reading "Can't find _DS_MENU.dat" on a black screen. Anyone know what's happened? My console is a New 3DSXL.
I'm so glad I found this video, short long story, I accidentally deleted important files off (games wouldn't boot without moonshl files) my perfectly working card without backing up (rookie mistake) and I spent hours scouring the internet for the files back, but all I could find were outdated kernels n stuff, some let me play pkmn black 2 but no cheats, and others let me enable cheats but wouldn't load the game, and others had no cheats and wouldn't load at all, it was a total mess, but this video saved me. I was using the r4 wood menu before, I kinda miss how it looked, but the ysmenu does look cleaner.
What's autoboot with twilight? I just recently modded my N3DS and have twilight setup for DS but I also have a r4 card to see what setup I like better.
@@BeHempy Yes, and when you select your r4 card to play it automatically boots into the twilight menu and not first through YSmenu or the standard firmware.
You should really move the download for the retro pack to a different website, I just waited 3 hours for my download only for it to get stuck at 91% and make start the whole download over
I'm having a similar problem, but my problem is that it downloads really fast to 90% and then it dramatically slows down to the point where I've been waiting for about 5 mins and It's still stuck on 90%. I did get to 91% but I tried redownloading it again because it just wasn't downloading and "Temporary error, retrying" keeps popping up and when it goes away it pops up against a few seconds later and I'm not sure what to do

@@ashleymorton9623 I don't know where you get this information from but it's wrong. I am using a 64GB on my R4. You can also see this information on the faq of the official R4 site.
Nowadays its a real pain to setup an r4 card.I had to download and install several firmware just to get it working.So my advice to anyone having problems is check your sd card if its from a legit source, then try as much firmware as possible,even the ones that arent for your models.
One thing to note with Twilight Menu: When transferring over to it from the r4's default kernel/menu, some Ds games may have their save data wiped. I had this happen with Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey. Apparently, SMT Strange Journey didn't generate a .SAV file when creating save data on the old kernel/menu. Kinda sucks because I was on my 3rd playthough, but hey, whatcha gonna do?
Would you need to install any wood kernel? I think the most recent one is v1.62. I read that you need the most recent kernel to play patched .nds roms. Is ysmenu the only way to block the time bomb?
The moonshell firmware is already included with the download. Wood R4 is for a different type of R4 Card that isn’t included. YsMenu is the best and pretty much the only way to effectively block the time bomb.
Hey, first of all thank you for this fantastic video, it helped me out a lot! Everything works perfectly, except for GBA Games. I open the GBA Runner in the Emulators folder, then I select the GBA Game i wish to play (in this case Pokemon Emerald) and it just blackscreens from there. Have tried multiple roms, none seem to work for the GBA Runner, all other emulators seem to run fine. Any ideas anyone?

You are in fact running GBA games on a Emulator and not using the backwards compatibility since you can't use it through slot 1 you need to load game through slot 2 to use the GameBoy hardware in the DS but that's only for DS lite and the original DS model. That's the reason why the Emulation has sound issues and glitching, if it was using the backwards compatibility it wouldn't be having those issues.
So, on my new 3DS, how do i can i use the emulators? All the games, SNES, Game Gear...have the same problem about the "no flash cartridge in slot 2". Can you please help me? Thanks!
@@rosarossastraus Sure I think I can help! Are you using a R4 Card? Because I'm sure that just runs like it's a normal old DS so it would have issues with it. But if you have a New 3DS you should be able to play those games without a R4 Card and on the console itself. it would work much better, I heard you can even play PS1 Games on a New 3DS so you should try Modding your 3DS for the best experience So Basically just Mod your New3DS and put the games onto the System. Since the Emulators on the R4 are made for a original DS in mind

@@rosarossastraus Hey that's great! Happy to hear out figured out how to get it working and Yeah you can play PS1 and N64 Games on there. There's a Version of Super Mario 3D that's a Native port from the Decomplication Project of it! and it runs at 60fps. Honestly it's totally worth Modding it though I only have a DS Lite at the moment so my Options are pretty limited ahah.
I'm using a DSi and a 32GB micro sd and a R4 SDHC 2021 card and when I attempt to launch it on my DSi, I get the message "can't open _ds_menu.dat" does anyone know the fix? I followed each and every step in the video and am unsure if there are any extra steps I was supposed to do before hand.

@@javi763 so it turns out with further research, that the r4 card is incompatable with 3ds games. However, it still can be played on a 3ds. There is a way to put 3ds game files on the root of a 3ds. (ruclips.net/video/AGhNLBN6mW0/видео.html). I would say the r4 is still very much worth it, as you can put all your ds games and gameboy games on it with ease.

Mega is seriously throttling the download speed. As it got closer and closer to finishing it dropped to as low as 1kb/s
thats why i dont use mega, they alway throttle the download speeds and it frustrating to have to download something and mega being the only option.
It's so damn annoying

i think you click to the emulator file and then you select the room you want to play

@@cuerge3000 I just needed a folder or 2 folders from the link. As for the firmware, I already had it from a long time ago. I believe that the R4 firmware is different depending on the manufacturer and R4 card type.
HI I tried this on my 3DSXL and i get an error where it says "no flash card in slot 2" I can see the roms but they wont open just get that message. Any ideas?
Only reason why I can see that happening is because you’re using GBARunner2, use a different gba emulator

Hey! I'm trying to play my save file of pokemon black, however the game freezes when i try to save. I didnt have this problem when i was running the 'official' R4 firmware, but that had the timebomb etc etc. Ive done some digging, and i apparently need to get a 'patched' ROM of the game that im failing to find. Besisdes, i'm using the rom from my official copy of pokemon black, so idk if im willing to download a different rom from a sketchy site. Do you have any other fixes, or just any advice?

There's anti piracy files that need to be on the R4 SD card in order for most ds games to work with ysmenu
@@DatCrazyNerf this "time bomb" is a hidden file feature in the original R4 firmware. After a certain date, the firmware stops working, forcing consumers to buy a "newer" model R4 card. Ysmenu fixes that by disabling the "time bomb" feature in the firmware. However, with Ysmenu, there's extra anti piracy files that go along with it to make all ds games compatible with it

This works great for me! All my ds games work and the saves are not lost either!
However, the .gba files that I put in the GBA folder display an error "No flash cartridge in slot2" when I try to run them. Do you or anyone else know of a way to solve this?
Also, where should I place .cia files for 3ds games? They do not show up when I put them in the Games folder.

run GBARunner2.nds in the emulator folder before running gba games, the GBA folder is just a directory for GBARunner2 to find games in

In order to play GBA games, you have to enter the emulators folder and run GBARUNNER2. Then you will be able to select the GBA game you want to play inside the emulator

and emulator that gives the option the over-clock games that are kinda slow or are slow.

I know it's been awhile like almost a year but i need help. You see I got an r4 gold card right to use on my 3ds. So I have done everything it depicts in the video. The only roadblock is that for some reason I can't put any of my roms onto the micro sd card like where they are suppose to go. Plus when I put r4 card in I thought at least it would display the menu even if I couldn't play any games.
Nope it just gives me the white screen with the question mark on it.

Got the same issue my dude. I had it working but I couldn't run anything on it so formatted it to do this and it seems to have stopped working. Will let you know if I can fix it
It took a while but I worked it out. It's to do with the size of your card and how you reformat it.
You need a card that is less than 32Gb and when you format it make it Fat32. You can do that in the formatting menu, idk why Anton left that out
Hey has something changed between now and the upload date? Following the instructions, my R4 card shows a Spongebob game, and when launched, I get an error reading "Can't find _DS_MENU.dat" on a black screen. Anyone know what's happened? My console is a New 3DSXL.

I'm so glad I found this video, short long story, I accidentally deleted important files off (games wouldn't boot without moonshl files) my perfectly working card without backing up (rookie mistake) and I spent hours scouring the internet for the files back, but all I could find were outdated kernels n stuff, some let me play pkmn black 2 but no cheats, and others let me enable cheats but wouldn't load the game, and others had no cheats and wouldn't load at all, it was a total mess, but this video saved me. I was using the r4 wood menu before, I kinda miss how it looked, but the ysmenu does look cleaner.

What's autoboot with twilight? I just recently modded my N3DS and have twilight setup for DS but I also have a r4 card to see what setup I like better.
@@BeHempy Oh, if you set up autoboot on your r4 card you can automatically start twilight menu without ysmenu.

You should really move the download for the retro pack to a different website, I just waited 3 hours for my download only for it to get stuck at 91% and make start the whole download over
I'm having a similar problem, but my problem is that it downloads really fast to 90% and then it dramatically slows down to the point where I've been waiting for about 5 mins and It's still stuck on 90%. I did get to 91% but I tried redownloading it again because it just wasn't downloading and "Temporary error, retrying" keeps popping up and when it goes away it pops up against a few seconds later and I'm not sure what to do

I recommend not downloading a formatting program use the built in format with your file manager
If your SD card is bigger than 32GB, you actually need a program to format it in FAT32
8gb is the max an R4 can take so no problems using built in file manager

Does this work with the 2020 Gold Pro edition?
Nowadays its a real pain to setup an r4 card.I had to download and install several firmware just to get it working.So my advice to anyone having problems is check your sd card if its from a legit source, then try as much firmware as possible,even the ones that arent for your models.
One thing to note with Twilight Menu: When transferring over to it from the r4's default kernel/menu, some Ds games may have their save data wiped. I had this happen with Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey.
Apparently, SMT Strange Journey didn't generate a .SAV file when creating save data on the old kernel/menu. Kinda sucks because I was on my 3rd playthough, but hey, whatcha gonna do?
If I use twilight menu, do I not need to use ys menu or the wood kernel? You're the man coach steve

Would you need to install any wood kernel? I think the most recent one is v1.62. I read that you need the most recent kernel to play patched .nds roms.
Is ysmenu the only way to block the time bomb?
The moonshell firmware is already included with the download. Wood R4 is for a different type of R4 Card that isn’t included. YsMenu is the best and pretty much the only way to effectively block the time bomb.

Only reason why I can see that happening is because you’re using GBARunner2, use a different gba emulator and see if that works

Hey, first of all thank you for this fantastic video, it helped me out a lot! Everything works perfectly, except for GBA Games. I open the GBA Runner in the Emulators folder, then I select the GBA Game i wish to play (in this case Pokemon Emerald) and it just blackscreens from there. Have tried multiple roms, none seem to work for the GBA Runner, all other emulators seem to run fine. Any ideas anyone?

You are in fact running GBA games on a Emulator and not using the backwards compatibility since you can't use it through slot 1 you need to load game through slot 2 to use the GameBoy hardware in the DS but that's only for DS lite and the original DS model. That's the reason why the Emulation has sound issues and glitching, if it was using the backwards compatibility it wouldn't be having those issues.
So, on my new 3DS, how do i can i use the emulators? All the games, SNES, Game Gear...have the same problem about the "no flash cartridge in slot 2".

@@rosarossastraus Sure I think I can help! Are you using a R4 Card? Because I'm sure that just runs like it's a normal old DS so it would have issues with it. But if you have a New 3DS you should be able to play those games without a R4 Card and on the console itself. it would work much better, I heard you can even play PS1 Games on a New 3DS so you should try Modding your 3DS for the best experience
So Basically just Mod your New3DS and put the games onto the System. Since the Emulators on the R4 are made for a original DS in mind

@@rosarossastraus Hey that's great! Happy to hear out figured out how to get it working and Yeah you can play PS1 and N64 Games on there. There's a Version of Super Mario 3D that's a Native port from the Decomplication Project of it! and it runs at 60fps. Honestly it's totally worth Modding it though I only have a DS Lite at the moment so my Options are pretty limited ahah.

@@javi763 so it turns out with further research, that the r4 card is incompatable with 3ds games. However, it still can be played on a 3ds. There is a way to put 3ds game files on the root of a 3ds. (ruclips.net/video/AGhNLBN6mW0/видео.html). I would say the r4 is still very much worth it, as you can put all your ds games and gameboy games on it with ease.
