Fascinating to hear about the history of hacking the slot 1. Late in the Ds's life was so great for the homebrew community! This was my childhood (with the great Acekard)! Moonshell was the ultimate app for a kid who didn't have a mp3/media player. It turned the NDS into something comparable to phones at the time, playing back midi/mp3s/and video files. There was also this awesome homebrew mega man game, that was short, but was tons of fun and it included a level editor. Oh, and Lemmings, allowing all of the retro level packs and more to run on the NDS! Thanks so much for covering this!
i love how this channel inspires me to mod my consoles again. Things have changed so much since the simple days of the PS2 with constant firmware updates i always worry im gonna end up with a banned or bricked console
@Holo Scope, why are you pirating 3ds CIAs? FUN isn't illegal in it of itself but downloading 3ds CIA's from any site is just wrong. It wasn't the original intent of the modders. I just use GM9 and FBI to dump my game cartridges and download them.
Moonshell was so much fun back in the day. It really opened my eyes to what homebrew was. I had a ps1 that could play burnt discs and I played some emulators on the og Xbox but it felt different seeing what was possible on a handheld in 2005. It was really exciting and a ton of fun, and a great community
I remember that the DS was THE Homebrew machine. Instead of only hacking to run roms it had a really big library of homebrew. The programmers loved that device!
Definitely my most favorite and often used homebrew for this system was MoonShell2, a multipurpose media player that actually used the ActImagine video codec used by a lot of DS games to run rudimentary video playback. The quality was terrible, and things were bitcrunched horribly, but it worked! And it could go over 125% of the DS Lite's max volume without distortion. For an MP3 player before the 3DS, it was a godsent.
Well... When I updated moonshell and its softwares back then I noticed that the image quality got better but I still dont know till this day if it was the software or the moonshell updated rom fault.
Quake and Quake II run semi-decently, and they even work with mods and network play! You can even play a network game between WiiQuake, DSQuake, and PC Quake.

I was dumb enough to pay about 75 dollars for a dark blue nintendo ds lite in 2017 . I didn't know much about Nintendo consoles back then . Well it was in a very good condition can't lie about that . Also got the box , R4 Card which hasn't hit timebomb in these 3 years , manual and charger . But still at max it's worth about 45 dollars I think
I've loved my OG launch DS the games and the chat and everything, and nearly 10 years ago i got my first R4 card it blew my mind on what the DS could do and the homebrew community. When Quake DS released i gave it a go instantly.
This was 1 year ago, but you can adjust the time back to bypass the timebomb. Example: April 4 2020 today, right? You need to put the time back to 2006 or so with the DS Time setting. I hope you understood this solution because it's so hard to explain ;-;
First of all, don't buy a R4 Card with a year put in the card because it will most likely have a timebomb (Example: R4i SDHC RTS Lite 2020). If you so happen already have an R4 Card with timebomb, you have 2 solutions: Change the date before the timebomb activate or change the firmware/kernel into a YSmenu. YSmenu doesn't look as pretty as the nornal R4 firmware but it will fix the timebomb issue and skins is way easier to make and install.
You guys don't get it, the point of the time bomb isn't to brick the cart, it's meant as a reminder for you to update the kernel. If you get a timebomb you have to uninstall the kernel, whilst putting the games on it to a seperate file and install the new kernel to the sd cart, then put the games you preserved earlier back on the cart and done, thats the point of the timebomb.
I got a nearly perfect condition ds lite from a car boot sale, and took the buttons from a broken silver one, and put them in my black one. It looks really good!
Using a flashcart to hack a 3DS and carry all my DS games is my favorite thing ever. Bought a 3DS just for that. I'll have to check out some classic DS homebrew too! I love carrying my entire NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS, VB, Genesis, MS, TG16 (and more) libraries with me all on a single cart!
I really appreciate that when you replay SD content, you do it with scanlines and an old style TV as the borders. I just think that's really cool and that I should mention it, so, thanks.
I literally just bought my friends DS lite off of him yesterday to do homebrew, and was having a hard time finding a good video on it. You are the best there is!!
Excelent video! Just a quick note: The kernel used on these bootleg R4 carts have a timebomb inside, so after a time (few months in general), the cart becomes unusable (that's the reason R4SDHC releases a new model every year). However, some users from GBATemp Forum created a custom kernel for these carts, with better interface, better compatibility and without the timebomb. The DS is a very good console to emulation, despite the slowdown problems, it's a good Way to play retro games on the go. Some other good emulators for the DS is NitroGrafx (Turbografx-16/PC-Engine), Lameboy (Game Boy and Game Boy Color) and nesDS (NES).
@@Jokypond It's just a name given for these carts, they stop working after a few months. It can be rectified either with a custom kernel install or by resetting your ds to an earlier date, because they check the date of the ds.
@@kevinleite6309 Yeah, OP made a mistake. Should have stated that SOME can have timebombs. An original R4 is extremely hard to come by nowadays, some of them are just clones, and a lot of the clones can have timebombs in them

Being able to choose the GBA screen was so neat. My first GBA was an SP, so having my screen between my buttons felt off. It was such an under appreciated QOL feature
the DS is to the GBA as the wii is to the GCN in the sense that the ds stole alot of games from the GBA the same way that the wii stole alot of games from the GCN and they will always be cursed for that. the wii and ds are both shit consoles. gaming really died after the 6th generation. i haven't timed it but i can get over 30 hours of battery life in my modded GBA with 2 rechargeable AA batteries. which can easily be replaced if need be with cheap high quality batteries from any store. i don't have a ds and don't care to ever have one but don't they get less than half that battery life? with batteries that can only be replaced with cheap chinese knockoffs ordered off the internet. i can also carry a second set of AAs with me and easily open the battery cover with my finger if 30 hours isn't enough. the GBA might not be able to emulate an SNES or genesis but i can emulate those on my gamecube so no problem. i can say that the GBA should have had 4 face buttons though so the ds is superior in that sense. nintendo needs to learn that the love of money is the root of all evil and being a greedy capitalist corporation means that you are a piece of shit. didn't sega teach you not to be afraid to die? like socrates taught us that we shouldn't fear death. in some cultures you can't even be considered a man unless you are not afraid to die. if you try to make the world a better place the forces of evil will assassinate you. like they did to jesus. like the cia assassinated martin luther king, john lennon, jfk, rfk, jfk jr, paul welstone, tried to kill reagan to put cia chief george bush as president etc etc.. it might be a very strong animal instinct to fear death but it's an animal instinct none the less. it's not like you are carrying the torch for some irreplaceable movement to make the world a better place. like i said you are just a greedy capitalist corporation that makes the world a worse place. even though capitalism is evil, the truly wise know that good morality is good business. you're welcome for the free business advice. can you imagine if the oil industry wasn't afraid to die? 90% of life on earth wouldn't be dead in the next 15 years. instead, the most profitable industry in the history of the world pays $0 in taxes and we tax payers actually pay them billions of dollars a year to help them compete against renewable energy. it doesn't matter if you are a good person or not because if you are part of an evil system you are going to behave in an evil way. there are two types of people in the world, selfish people and compassionate people. selfish people care more about themselves than they care about other people. while compassionate people care more about other people than they care about themselves. if you are selfish and you get something that you want, you get a small dose of dopamine and you feel happy for a short time but it is fleeting. soon you want more to get another dose, because isn't that what animals do? chase good feelings and avoid bad feelings.. it's an endless cycle and you can never feel satisfied. if you follow it to it's logical end and become a monarch or a capitalist, you can still never feel satisfied, you still always want more money and power. however if you are compassionate and dedicate your life to helping others then you can feel satisfied because in the end you have helped so many other people. also you will end up in heaven and eternity is a long time compared to your short moment here on earth so that is a plus. "it's easier to fit a camel through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to get into heaven." -jesus we must tame the animal instincts of man and create behavior based on moral reason.
EDDD Cubed you just turned somthing completely different into a stupid debate about evil, and no i don’t have to keep paying for battery’s i can just plug it in and it will last forever (i never really timed it though so it could be somthing like 20 which is still long)
EDDD Cubed also you shouldn’t look through life based on morals, you should do it based on logic, you kill 1 man to save 5 you kill 1 man to save a child, you kill 5 men to save your genes, while moral should come into play moral is very complicated and how we run things should very much be based on logic
I hope that if you talk about the Dsi/3ds you HAVE to cover *TWiLightMenu* 🤩, especially if you are going to talk about the Dsi, where you can run ROMs and homebrews *without any flashcard* in the more powerful TWL mode using Unlaunch and Hiya CFW... The Dsi has a lot of potential!
DS had a phenomenal homebrew scene once the slot 1 devices came out. Man those were the days. Most (all?) of the R4 clones use compatible firmware so play around with what's available online.
I did run some homebrew on my DSi using an R4DS card. Those were good times! And I did try out DSLinux on it as well. It was pretty cool, and it was kind of a shame that the project died so fast.
I want to do a homebrew for the ds but i dont know how or where to start or what do I should use. Can you guide/help me? Just some words or links... IDK, anything helps...
@@dustinvq37 hold on? Inst this for installing CFW and homebrew to the DS? I already did that. What I want to do is actually code my own homebrew app for the ds. But thanks anyway.
Yeah, the DSTwo is getting really hard to find, is expensive when you do, drains the battery like no other (putting a ~400 Mhz CPU on-board will do that), and is entirely superseded by just using a 3DS instead. If you're hell-bent on running accurate SNES emulation on a DS, then yeah, it's your best bet, but it's a dog with fleas.
raelik777 Yeah I got one for the GBA/SNES emulation but it’s pretty much obsolete now that the 3DS can do it so much better. Even worse, I think there’s some bug with it on 3DS where the CPU is always at max frequency. If you put the system in sleep mode, even just playing a normal DS game, the battery dies very fast if it’s not on a charger. Thought my launch 3DS was finally biting the dust at first but turns out it was just the DSTwo.
CATSFC was the best SNES emulator by far. It was basically a much better version than the DSTWO version. The GBA emulator same thing TempGBA was the best one. DSTWO definitely was the best card with its extra processor allowing for good GBA and SNES emulation.
I found a ds lite in a gutter about a year ago. Literally sitting in water. Dried it out, and it worked! A few months after, the top screen died, but I was able to get a replacement for
I had a couple of flashcart setups, one was called the G6 4G which used the GBA slot (I had the flashcart for my gameboy micro anyway) and it used a pass through chip in the DS game slot. To write roms to it it used proprietary software and a GBA to usb adapter. The next card I got was called the M3 ultra and that was really cool, jumping to micro SD like the R4 Gold, the convenience of just drag and drop blew my mind back then. It was a setup that served me well, I had a web browser on it, a homebrew ipod app with the scroll wheel functionality, and of course lots of games. It essentially made my DS into a smartphone way before smartphones were widely adopted.
Can't believe you did a NDS video without mentioning the supercard DSTWO the greatest NDS flashcard of all time it definitely has the best SNES emulation you can get on a NDS through it's custom emulator ,better than SNemulDS even though it is using the processor in the DSTWO
@drencoss yes it does but yeah i am pretty sure it is not being made and probably not easy to get a old of one now the card has it's own CPU and RAM and custom SNES and GBA emulators as well as a custom video player
Agreed. I bought a 3DS XL on a good deal and got a SC DSTwo for it (before the 3DS was hacked) to exploit its DS capabilities, since my last handheld was a Gameboy Pocket and nothing in between. I also had to buy a DS Lite to install/update the firmware for 3DS capabilities, if I remember correctly. I bought a cheap broken one and a new display (20€ total) and gifted that to a younger cousin together with a cheaper R4 flashcart. Later I bought a Gateway for the 3DS (which also had a R4 clone as an NDS flashcart to get everything sorted). After there was CFW for the 3DS, the Gateway gets no use anymore. The DSTwo still does. :D If you want a very cheap entry into handheld gaming the DS Lite is fine. I'd personally try to save up some more and get a 3DS/2DS for a good price, since it opens up some more options without breaking compatibility.
I have one of those, got it for my 3DS, it's pretty decent but I barely even use it anymore... Ever since I installed CFW on my 3DS I was then able to get SNES and PC engine running on my old 3DS at 60 FPS with no noticeable input lag, pixel-perfect resolution and much MUCH better sound, and then there's the GBA VC injections which runs every game perfectly and doesn't drain my battery in the process... Now I only use it for proper DS games, and maybe GB/GBC emulation, because for some reason the 3DS version of gameyob runs worse than the DS version, which is a crying shame, and even then I rarely play DS games anymore, the 3DS's own library is so much better IMHO... If you have a DS but not a 3DS, that's supposed to be the best flash cart you can get, but custom DStwo software drains the DS's battery like there's no tomorrow, if you're going for high performance that is, so it's up to you to decide if that's worth it, but personally, I'd say just get a 3DS and install CFW in it, you'll have a much better time with it...
Pretty sure the prevalence of flash carts killed a ton of game sales but helped sell a lot of consoles. Nintendo consoles still remain fairly easy to crack and emulate today.
When you cover the 3DS, make sure you make a point about how utterly terrible Nintendo's antipiracy methods were and how easy it was for people to literally download games straight from Nintendo's own servers via FreeShop/Wii U USB Helper/etc
DS is the best hand held game console ever made.I'm still playing on my DS to this day despite having other portable sysytems. This game console have huge variety of amazing games.
I don’t have anything against emulation, but with the massive DS and GBA library available, I’ve never reached the point where I was bored with what legally exists. In fact, it’s the perfect time to collect those games based on availability and price.
I made a whole album using NitroTracker on a DSTwo cart. The album got publish under Piko Piko Detroit. I made my own sound effects that I got from old Nintendo games & used them all in Nitro Tracker.
This takes me back. I had one of the earlier R4 clones and a crimson red DS Lite. At the time, there weren't really any good homebrew games that I can remember being good enough to keep on my expensive 2GB Micro SD card. If anything, the coolest part about the homebrew scene was the "applications". I can distinctly remember having a homebrew MP3 player that looked like an iPod, a Voice-Over-IP (SIP) client, a video player, and a fairly functional web browser. You have to remember that this was before smart-phones were a thing and, as a 12 year old, I felt like a super bad ass being able to make phone calls, watch movies, listen to music, and browse the web from a device with a touchscreen that could fit into my pocket! The fact that the DS was never "meant" to do any of those things was the ultimate cherry on top. The feeling of having "hacked" the DS had a huge impression on my young mind; I consider it to be one of just a few reasons why I ended up in the Cyber Security industry. Anyways, nice video. I also really enjoy your other content which talks about how each of the platform's security protection was eventually defeated.
I have a DS lite that hasn't been used in over a year, grabbed it to play for a bit of nostalgia, expecting it needing a charge. Turned it on and behold the green light of greatness! True build quality
i found a ds at goodwill for $3 and picked it up on a what the hell. now i use it everyday, very useful with the r4 chip. great little emulation machine! and nitrotracker rocks :D
I love these homebrew videos that show off what each system is capable of. You really go through the research and put all that information together in a video and it teaches me a few things I didn't know about. I'm on the verge of selling my DS Lite because I have many homebrew'd systems and I never use the DS lite at all. My 3DS replaces my DS lite, being capable of playing GBA and DS games natively. As well as emulating snes and sega genesis perfectly. And I only plan on getting another 3DS if anything were to happen to my current one. Bottom line, I don't need a DS lite personally but I agree that it's a great homebrew system, it kept my busy back in the day.
I hope you talk about the SuperCard DSTWO(+) brand of Flashcards that actually have an on-board CPU that add to the DS' processing power making SNES emulation much better and even GBA emulation through Slot-1 a possibility. Great video as always!
For 10 years of my life I had and used a DS lite stupidly often and it was only today that I learned the giant cavity in the front of the thing was a port for a game boy cartridge I am screaming

You should take a look at "colors!" for nintendo DS. I still use it for drawing. Also, theres a "portal" port for DS wich I think is very good. I never thought that the DS was capable of running something like that. The NEOGEO emulator is also very good but you need to convert the rom first.
You should do a video on DSi CFW. It's now possible to run DSiWare backups, DSi enhanced game backups, and normal DS backups off the SD card, as well as replace the normal DSi home menu with Twilight launcher.
@@HUYI1 Yeah, it's all happened within the last year. Because of the 3ds's advancements in DSiware exploits, some people found a way to exploit Flipnote, and then found a bootloader exploit on the DSi to use a nand redirect to the SD card and run CFW.

Please adress the timebomb problem regarding these cards. The fix is easy too.
This was 1 year ago, but you can adjust the time back to bypass the timebomb. Example: April 4 2020 today, right? You need to put the time back to 2006 or so with the DS Time setting. I hope you understood this solution because it's so hard to explain ;-;
@@snekify What is this necessary for?
First of all, don't buy a R4 Card with a year put in the card because it will most likely have a timebomb (Example: R4i SDHC RTS Lite 2020). If you so happen already have an R4 Card with timebomb, you have 2 solutions: Change the date before the timebomb activate or change the firmware/kernel into a YSmenu. YSmenu doesn't look as pretty as the nornal R4 firmware but it will fix the timebomb issue and skins is way easier to make and install.
@@miguelcelorio7982 For R4 cards with a timebomb
You guys don't get it, the point of the time bomb isn't to brick the cart, it's meant as a reminder for you to update the kernel. If you get a timebomb you have to uninstall the kernel, whilst putting the games on it to a seperate file and install the new kernel to the sd cart, then put the games you preserved earlier back on the cart and done, thats the point of the timebomb.

Some other good emulators for the DS is NitroGrafx (Turbografx-16/PC-Engine), Lameboy (Game Boy and Game Boy Color) and nesDS (NES).

nintendo needs to learn that the love of money is the root of all evil and being a greedy capitalist corporation means that you are a piece of shit. didn't sega teach you not to be afraid to die? like socrates taught us that we shouldn't fear death. in some cultures you can't even be considered a man unless you are not afraid to die. if you try to make the world a better place the forces of evil will assassinate you. like they did to jesus. like the cia assassinated martin luther king, john lennon, jfk, rfk, jfk jr, paul welstone, tried to kill reagan to put cia chief george bush as president etc etc.. it might be a very strong animal instinct to fear death but it's an animal instinct none the less. it's not like you are carrying the torch for some irreplaceable movement to make the world a better place. like i said you are just a greedy capitalist corporation that makes the world a worse place. even though capitalism is evil, the truly wise know that good morality is good business. you're welcome for the free business advice. can you imagine if the oil industry wasn't afraid to die?

DSTwo is the best flash cart available. Its stock SNES is a great emulator. It also can do GBA from slot 1.
Was going to say, I remember the Supercard DSTwo having much improved SNES emulation.
It's also very expensive and getting harder and harder to find.
A few months after, the top screen died, but I was able to get a replacement for
That's an awesome story. :v
Can't believe you did a NDS video without mentioning the supercard DSTWO
the greatest NDS flashcard of all time
it definitely has the best SNES emulation you can get on a NDS through it's custom emulator ,better than SNemulDS

@drencoss yes it does but yeah i am pretty sure it is not being made and probably not easy to get a old of one now
the card has it's own CPU and RAM and custom SNES and GBA emulators as well as a custom video player
I owned one of those, I think I still have it somewhere. :)
But even the dstwo plus with 400mhz cpu cant do 60fps on snes emus. Playing mario at 40fps is not fun.
Gbarunner2 is better for snes-gba ports.

I used to have ScummVM on my DS-lite back in the day so I could play my favourite game of all time (The Secret of Monkey Island) on the train :)
I hope you talk about the SuperCard DSTWO(+) brand of Flashcards that actually have an on-board CPU that add to the DS' processing power making SNES emulation much better and even GBA emulation through Slot-1 a possibility. Great video as always!
I only use my modded DS Lite for DS games on SD card. I use the 3DS XL for all my portable emulation.
For 10 years of my life I had and used a DS lite stupidly often and it was only today that I learned the giant cavity in the front of the thing was a port for a game boy cartridge I am screaming
You got any GBA games tho?
You can also use an EZ Flash GBA cart...
But also can just go with original GBA cartridges. It's nice to have a couple dozen (Good GBA Games) as physical carts.
Everything else that you cant get just use downloads
In 2008 I made a homebrew called dDJs Silver, it’s a simple DJ Controller. The NDS is still a great console.
Great video. Recently purchased a New 2DS XL. So can't wait for the 3DS homebrew video.
I'm sorry sir, but Nintendo is adamant on blocking homebrew. So In the latest software update to my knowledge there isn't any homebrew ports that are still usable. Again, sorry.
CrazyFeverDream give it a year. All of the homebrew software will be back and better than ever
3ds.guide Go to this website. Every version is supported. Just read carefully on what you need
@@roberttaylr They are all supported, and you don't need any hardware to mod it, check here: 3ds.hacks.guide/get-started
@CrazyFeverDream is just spitting misinform nonsense.
Rijads I think the “New” series might need a flash card but yeah there’s a lot you can do including running DS ROMs and emulators up to the GBA
“Handheld wars” like anyone stood a chance against Nintendo
Psp single handedly destroyed ds in terms of power and graphics
RaineTCG $25? Most of the Ds Lites I see are still priced $50 at used shops around my city, even online. Same with the DSi, I’ve seen it selling for $80.
@@yashy2x It might have been good in those terms, but the DS won in any other way. More games, way better sales, more affordable price and a charming design
I still have a few functioning Nintendo DS Lites laying around from when I was little! I might buy one of these cards and use it instead. (Edit) This'll also give me a good chance to clean em out and repair em, lol.
My childhood is the Nintendo DS Lite because it was my first game system ever!
I remember installing an Ebook reader and a comic book reader on my NDS Lite. I even used the comic book homebrew in an emergency to prepare for exams. Good Memories!
the home brew on the ds was great basically turned the ds into an early smart phone minus the phone calls. i ditched my creative zen when i figured out that i could install moonshell and play all my music on the ds and run around with one cart that had like every game on it. people had organizers, maps and instant messengers running on the thing heck there was even a web browser on it a bad one but it was there. the ds was a unspoken hero when i came to home brew my SWITCH has less features than my DS lite.
You can turn your DS to the phone, too. It's called SvSIP
Now you can't even find a ds lite for less than $40 usually...
You should take a look at "colors!" for nintendo DS.
I still use it for drawing.
Also, theres a "portal" port for DS wich I think is very good. I never thought that the DS was capable of running something like that.
The NEOGEO emulator is also very good but you need to convert the rom first.
Your intro music style reminds me of the classic animated movies like the 1986 Transformers. Love it.
Oh boy covering 3DS homebrew. If you want to discuss the history of the methods and specifically how to manage and install them, see you in an hour
@ModernVintageGamer Hey dude im a long island native so i'll be seeing you at the cradle of aviation in august then. Cant wait
my fave was running windows 3.0 on the ds and being able to play some windows 3.0 games and 80's some 90's dos games
How do you do that?
You should do a video on DSi CFW. It's now possible to run DSiWare backups, DSi enhanced game backups, and normal DS backups off the SD card, as well as replace the normal DSi home menu with Twilight launcher.
that is pretty neat, is that a recent advancement?
@@HUYI1 Yeah, it's all happened within the last year. Because of the 3ds's advancements in DSiware exploits, some people found a way to exploit Flipnote, and then found a bootloader exploit on the DSi to use a nand redirect to the SD card and run CFW.
i should look some of this stuff up, very useful.
@@legoboy-ox2kx yes but alot of games still have problems when booting off the sd card
@@someone-eo1zf Not as much anymore NDSBootstrap's compatibility is really good now.
I found my ds lite in a bag in garage , fulling working and with every piece included ✨
Love your channel because you have the knowledge to speak about things and know what's what. Thanks for your time bud.
Gamestops sells good condition used DSi for 15 Euros, DSi XL for 25 Euros. Great for hackers (Also New 3DS XL for 70 Euros)
Nintendo: There! We patched the DS from hacking!
Hackers: Hold my beer.
More like
Hackers: Hold my Mountain Dew
i just found my ds lite that i havent turned on in ~5 years and surprisingly the battery still had some charge lol
Back when the family had a DS Lite, we had a flash card with a MicroSD card inside which plays all sorts of games. Although my time had been mostly spent on Mario Kart and Mario Bros
I used to sit in the tech building of the college I attended with my Electric Blue DS and play Mario Kart and Animal Crossing between classes. Having come from a family which couldn't afford a computer during my childhood and adolescence, which caused me to miss out on early online gaming, it was incredible to be able to hop onto the college WiFi with this wonderful little Nintendo device and race people in Japan.
It's a shame that the lower screen on the Lite yellows considerably over time.
Thank you for the video and information.
