This is a sarcastic piece, yes the audience gets the sarcasm, no, by laughing they are not agreeing to the words said, they are recognizing and affirming things that happen around them

and how the character equated an outfit with the kkk hat, as both just images they are promoting. but one is promoting hatred and thats the jist of the difference
For everyone wondering, I believe the monologue is from "White People" by J.T. Rogers. Also, YoungArts should really cite the shows these monologues are from, because it was a bitch to find this lol.
This just shows Timothée Chalamet's brilliance. The fact that he could portray a character so believably that it causes all this discussion and arguments in the comments. Especially that he chose a monologue by a character who is literally the opposite of who he is as a person, a belief system that is diametrically opposed to his own, and portray it so convincingly.
No offense Timothée is a great character I just think many of these people are stupid. To genuinely believe this has any legitimacy to it is absurd. It's clearly satire
Wowza, I was actually avoiding some of these videos where Timmy is younger/in school because I thought it might be embarrassing but this is great! He really is a rockin' actor.
cyootiecat I know omg everyone is being so annoying...like just stfu he’s supposed be acting, not making an actual offensive speech. It’s just meant to be funny but people are taking it wayyyy too far 🙄
What a talent. If he keeps making the project choices he's made so far, he's going to have a long career ahead of him. But it's a shame that this went over some people's heads when it was first posted.

he's such a mature actor in this and at my age in this omg. and this monologue is satirical and needs to be done right and he did. i love him so much ahhhh
Wow are people really THAT slow?! OF COURSE this is satirical and OF COURSE Timothèe is not a racist monster in real life! What makes this hole monologue (apparently out of a play/book called "White people") so funny is not only his passionate delivery but the ridiculousness and all the hypocrisy that comes with this character. It is just a role, which is supposed to show how ignorant people can be by deliberatly believing in all kinds of stereotypes about black people. I am black and I nearly peed my pants while watching this video because I was laughing so hard lol
@PurelyAfrican ..so every hollywood actor who played a douche bag character...had related to it in some way? C'mon thats ridiculous. Christian Bale related to Dick Cheney and supported him because he chose that role??? Really? REALLyY???

I'm completely obsessed with this piece. The most interesting thing, and the difference between this performance and the shortened version he gives at his graduation/final performance (also on YT), is how the energy of the audience and the stage is powering his acting. Both are great performances, but this one is elevated by the excited energy of the crowd, and likely his energy on stage. It's awesome, all the way around.

Wow, the rubbing of his hands while he looks behind himself before the last line is such elevated, nuanced acting. At the same time, he has time to stifle a laugh if he needs to, where no one in the audience can see it. What a brilliant kid he was.
I think it’s one thing to understand the satire in it. The issue is that the audience seems to be laughing very hard as if they’re in agreement with the CHARACTER’S views. Not laughing because of the satirical point of view
i feel like that just means they were the exact type of audience the writer intended to hear the monologue. the last sentence being a slap in the face at the end of all of their laughing- like oh sh*t he’s talking about me. u can tell by how silent they got after his last line. i feel like an audience who already agreed w the moral wouldn’t have laughed as hard and would’ve reacted sooner to the final words
