    An interesting detail: out of all the demigods, only Miquella, Godwyn, Ranni, Morgott and Mohg don’t have paintings. Which is quite weird, at least for the first three.

      Might make sense for Miquella and Ranni. Miquey did most of his fame-inducing stuff early on as St. Trina and it wasn't until he started his Haligtree did he gather a following, and they seemed to prefer making statues to pictures. Ranni was the youngest of Rennala's children and mostly hung around with her reclusive teacher. Not saying it wouldn't have been nice for Rykard to have a picture of his younger sister but she likely wasn't considered a major figure in the world at the time.

Since they both opposed the greater will and Ranni was the only one among the family to be an emyprean, he maybe got rid of all the portraits of ranni's previous body after she managed to kill it, probably as a sign of respect or at ranni's wishes

    Interesting that one of the paintings has a person wearing the house marais ceremonial robe. Notice the mask doesn't look like the marais mask we get in game, the one in the painting possessing a beard. The only member we meet in game is a seemingly the last member and the head of the house, befitting the mask, and judging by the painting of melania, the prosthesis laying everywhere, and his rapier, he had a massive infatuation with our dear blade of Miquella. I like to believe that it was this infatuation that brought them ruin, as poison has infested their lands with only perfumers seeing any benefit, evil spirits and those who beckon them roaming amok, and they lost their prized executioners blade to a major criminal and deadly warrior, who enchanted it with an arcane rite unlike that usually found in the lands between.
    And where can we find this last noble of the Shaded Castle? Hiding out in the graveyard out back, probably driven out by the same prisoner who stole their sword and now inhabits it as their base, while the castle falls more into depravity.

      @PierceArner Год назад +29

      The clothing in the portrait is closest to the Official's Attire, which is a part of the Bloodsoaked Set. The Bloodsoaked Mask is just a set of wrapped bandages and the description states, _"Even the most ghastly cover is more inviting than the festering face beneath."_ which seems very similar to what we learn about Rya / Zorayas' biological mother, Daedicar.
      The Marias Robe uses that same garment, but is also has an additional shawl that is worn over it not present in this portrait. The Marias Mask also has no facial hair and has long braided white hair, which is totally different from the portrait. What's pictured is not a mask we ever get as a piece of equipment in game.
      It is noteworthy that Patches goes to House Marias' Shaded Castle afterwards and gives you the Castanets for Lady Tanith who became Rya's adopted mother. It seems to imply some connection there that may not have been fully developed, which is why this prominent portrait is so mysterious.

    • @Deadput
      @Deadput Год назад +7

      @@maxmazza2987 Similar but the Marais robes have an additional cape piece that goes on top and the mask while similar is still distinct from the other design, the noble robe and mask design are reused in different colors and accessories for different NPCs from Tanith to Marais to Kenneth Haight and more so it's probably just the standard garbs nobles wear in the Lands Between.

    I wonder why Godfrey's axe is broken in that painting. It got damaged outside of the Lands Between after he was exiled. I mean, the meta explanation is that they just used concept art for that painting but what about in-universe explanation. Maybe Godrick captured an a Tarnished painter and forced them to paint Godfrey in the way he's known among the Tarnished? The painting is accurate, so said painter must have seen Godfrey personally. Damn, having thought about it, how lucky Godrick must have been to get his many hands on that painting. Not only did he have to capture a Tarnished painter, but also a painter who was among the original Godfrey's Tarnished, not some of their descendants. Or maybe some Tarnished brought that painting to the Lands Between for some reason?

    • @humanwreckage4563

      I think he'd had his axe broken vs Placidusax (or a similar great battle) and the projection we see is exclusively drawn from a 'perfect' version of him. He was named Godfrey to hide away his Hoarah Loux ancestry, so it makes sense that the holy simulacrum of him would be similarily 'smoothed over' and made perfect looking. The projection doesn't have Serosh either.
      Elden Ring is a game about how the colonizers of a land destroyed it from the roots up, so it tracks the colonizing force (the Golden Order family) would even airbrush away flaws in a glorified sentry drone that carries the face of their queen's ex husband.

Side note so far we have had a lot of endings but a new ending with us properly joining forces with rykard or usurping him and maintaining hold of the manor would be a fun one that would play well with patches giving us a gift for Rykards old consort with a new outcome perhaps making this item cause her to actually come a bit to her senses and join you instead of being a sniveling mess eating her partners head. Would also give an ending that puts the lands into a new environment or "harder" / blasphemous state

    There is a landscape painting in a tower in stormville Castle, it's across the gap that leads down to Godwin's (other) corpse, through the shortcut door from the site of grace near a lift. It is as far as I can tell, a painting of limgrave and stormville Castle before the castle was built. And I have not seen any other piainting of it like that in the game.

    The portrait of Marika at 1:11 has always been interesting to me. It's probably the only insight we get into her actual personality, as it looks like a "sitting portrait." Her statutes seem more of a religious interpretation. It's a Mona Lisa type portrait where there feels to be a mystery to the character.

    I do find it interesting that Ranni and Godwyn do not have any painting from before the shattering
    It’s especially interesting considering those 2 are very obviously connected by the sheer fact that both were the catalysts of the shattering.
    The closest for Godwyn we got is literally, the painting from the opening cinematic of the night of the black knives.
    It’s also interesting that pre dlc miquella also had no painting besides, the one of mohg holding him which was also only in the opening cinematic.

But they changed Daedicar's role in the game so that he became a woman and also the birth mother of the Serpent Monsters/Rya. I don't know why they changed it, but the portrait is probably a holdover from when Daedicar was a man.

      @@aifos5171 The demigods aren't plain nobility though. Isn't it odd that a demigod would deign to dress in the manner of a regular human, of a servant? And the point of the masks is to let the wearer assume the role and esteem of something far greater and older than them. Whereby an unremarkable person legitimates their power as an inheritor or executor of some grand idea. The Marais mask represents all the history and prestige of that house. The ruler's mask embodies the model of an ideal lord. The consort's mask that of a queen where Tanith is merely consort and proprietress - which I think also precludes any depiction of her implying partnership instead of servitude to the Praetor and son of Radagon. If the demigods wore masks they should be of Marika, Godfrey or Radagon but they're distinct and powerful enough as direct offspring there is no need. Besides for references to their lineage like the use of red each are unto themselves a model to be imitated.

      Although it seems that Radagon had different personality, I believe that he was always part of Marika, useful for her to be in many places at once. There is a theory I've read on Reddit (or somewhere) that Radagon represents the Regression part of the Golden Order, so he would want to keep things as they originally were, and Marika represents Causality, so she would be more inclined for progress. There isn't much known about Radagon, he's called a champion but we are never told where he came from, characters we meet don't seem to know either (Corhyn states that he has no idea, the Turtle Pope doesn't say anything specific either). So maybe he's some lesser part of Marika that she wanted to be her champion in places she couldn't go to? Maybe she created him from the basic, unchanging part of order so he stays loyal and it backfired?
